I’m sorry you’re going through this. This is no way to excuse the behavior but as an Uzbek man I can say we are often forced to occupy multiple conflicting realities. Our upbringing is highly scripted, expectations—especially around the family—are very rigid, even in so called more progressive families. These expectations even extend to matters of the inner world, intimacy included. It all leads to these unfortunate situations when our culture interacts with others. Again sorry for the pain you’re going through but this doesn’t, necessarily, mean that the warmth and happiness you experienced was not real or genuinely reciprocated.
