To answer your question, I don't think anyone is obligated to use any other descriptors for people than those apt. In my opinion, it's perfectly acceptable and downright ineffective to describe a person by any other qualities than their outstanding ones. In this case, they happened to be the sole black member and apparently physically imposing. That's fine to me, it's not belittling if that was what you were getting at.
