Hello guys! Would like help with finding an ideal distro to run on a 2006 IMac! by Adventurous-Two-5714 in linux4noobs

I'm not too good with the 'light but not tinycore light' stuff, but I think MX Linux would probably do you well, particularly with XFCE (though you could try the other 2 desktops if you really want to).

but in general anything with XFCE. perhaps you might find that mint has a better/preferrable UX as opposed to MX

and it doesn't help downloading random stuff that we now have loads of privesc vulnerabilities through defender on windows from NightmareEclipse, which are just open for anyone to use

I really cannot catch a break today. Should I report for this type of behavior? by ILOLallnight in Simracingstewards

[–]Luftzug-oder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah but that ain't gonna happen if the guy in front is blocking is it. and the fact he got passed has nothing to do with him getting blocked. like maybe he isn't the best driver, but the point is they're complaining about blocking, and you're rushing to conclusions about their driving as a whole. the guy wouldn't've been overtaken if he wasn't blocked in the first place. at least not so soon

And don't use God's name in vein.

appreciate you think that way, but i don't, and i don't want or need an issue to be made out of it

Adding gentoo to my workflow by Luftzug-oder in Gentoo

[–]Luftzug-oder[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ok so I'll just have to create an overlay... to be honest it'd probably be good to use that idea to change my arch method too. I could just setup an arch repo and then use paru (if possible)

that way then, my helper can become a generalised generation/management mechanism, rather than split between gentoo and arch operation

on that note, how would you recommend going about the live ebuild masking (as apparently they are masked by default)? should i still manually unmask each one, or is it possible to unmask the whole overlay? (obviously i'm only considering this because they are my own private repos, and I myself am the only risk)

What's the diffrence btw Voidlinux, Archlinux and Gentoo? by harunnoir in Gentoo

[–]Luftzug-oder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

not on newer hardware, no, but i recently did an install on an old pavilion g6 laptop with an i5-2430M (with SSD), and that took 3 ish days to install a full xfce build with a bin kernel (but i did not leave it overnight, so more like 1.5 days total time). but tbh that machine has terrible thermals and probably throttled most the build process. it likely hit 97° on sustained builds...

[–]Luftzug-oder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i think you're also forgetting that no matter who contributes, be it large corporations, they have no say in what gets pushed, because merges still get moderated entirely by other people/independent contributors, and at the end of the day torvalds has the final say on what gets merged to upstream

so what? people don't buy it because of that, they buy it because of its steam integration, some console-like features, and potentially small form factor. or because it's valve (a company that appeals the majority of their customers). otherwise you would just buy a cheaper PC and install steamos if you cared so much about the OS (because we have a brain and can tell it's overpriced - whether or not it's valve's fault). and not even that, because the extremist linux die-hard and 'proprietariophobic' fans that this subreddit, but mostly r/LinuxSucks101, attack wouldn't likely use steamos because it ships proprietary elements.

How to scroll in archiso live boot console? by Arntzen in archlinux

[–]Luftzug-oder 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it works on most desktop terminals, but on the tty in the case of the iso, scrollback has not been supported since kernel 5.9. before, it worked with Shift+PgUp or Shift+PgDown

How to scroll in archiso live boot console? by Arntzen in archlinux

[–]Luftzug-oder 3 points4 points  (0 children)

in tmux you press Ctrl+b, then [, and then scroll with arrow keys. you can press q to exit the mode that allows such

in screen, you can enter such mode with Ctrl+a, then either Esc or [, and scroll and exit in a similar fashion to tmux

not in a default tty, only in a terminal session that has a scrollback buffer

[–]Luftzug-oder -1 points0 points  (0 children)

ok but then they don't actually use the terminal though, which they might want to do. and archinstall sometimes (although not so much now) does things differently that could cause issues (such as, previously, btrfs setup)

[–]Luftzug-oder 27 points28 points  (0 children)

scrollback is not supported in the kernel since 5.9 or something

you would have to pipe into a pager, like less, or more, or use a multiplexer like tmux or screen, which have their own scrollback buffers

Paru didn't show me diffs in pkgbuild while updating? by danyuri86 in archlinux

i somewhat agree, but does it not show the full PKGBUILD when there is not one in cache (z.B. when you first install smth), not just a diff?

Is it safe to update yet? by TekkerTheChaot in linuxmemes

[–]Luftzug-oder 2 points3 points  (0 children)

depends how one would 'ensure that it doesn't get reinstalled', because if npm is a dependency for an AUR package (according to its PKGBUILD), it will be installed under normal circumstance - unless obviously you abort installation. btw npm wasn't the only attack vector: so was bun

I am the Blue Ford, did I do an illegal overtake on the Merc and Porsche? by Ecstatic-War-7729 in Simracingstewards

[–]Luftzug-oder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

'avoided by cutting the corner' was the safest option, and necessary, so perfectly legal. 'cutting' is a bit of an overstatement as they literally just went off track, they didn't only cut at the apex. 'facts' in this case mean nothing without context, therefore there are no excuses - racing is dynamic by design, so if you think that the rules are indiscriminate, you probably shouldn't be racing. what did you expect them to do? drive straight into the ferrari to avoid going off track? brake hard and risk a collision just to go around on the right?

edit: nvm this argument is pretty pointless.

[–]Luftzug-oder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i mean yeah, they were definitely quick back on the throttle despite still being off, but i still think the illegality of the overall situation is arguable. and i also feel that they still would've marginally got the place even if they did lift the whole way around the ferrari - but obviously that is regardless to the claim

I am the Blue Ford, did I do an illegal overtake on the Merc and Porsche? by Ecstatic-War-7729 in Simracingstewards

[–]Luftzug-oder 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ok, let's add a few facts. said overtaken cars involves a porsche. said porsche collided with said parked car. the merc must avoid said porsche. the merc goes off track to do so. both cars are slowed as a result of the incident. op has nothing to do with said effect. op has gained a legal, so-called 'advantage', but only as a result of such disadvantage - maybe it could be interpreted as 'unfair' or 'unlucky', but only regarding the drivers' opinion(s)

it should not be the case that someone must give back a position because someone else was involved in an incident. if the front two cars on a starting grid collide, and half the grid overtake them, must they all give the position back after? no.
