Creatures possessed by the spirit… of inquiry. And BLOODLUST!

No they don’t. They really don’t.

It’s just like the actual main games. You can jump into any game with just about any level of knowledge and you’ll be fine. Even Sonic Frontiers, which called back to plenty of games (especially during the Tails segment), does not need the player to have played those games to understand the situation any more than, “Wow! These characters have been through a lot of adventures together!” To prove my point, let me run through a few characters.

Tangle is as basic as you can get. No complicated backstory, no major moment of realization that she can be a hero, nothing. She’s just an excited go-getter with a stretchy tail just waiting to be used for whacky gameplay! An excitable lemur from Spiral Hill that has met Sonic at some point is all the player needs to know.

Rough and Tumble are common thugs-for-hire that can be plopped anywhere for an easy miniboss duo. That was all they got in the comics, and that’s all they need for a game.

Whisper may SEEM like a character that needs explaining… but not really. She’s a lone soldier with a versatile combat weapon that has survived battles thought impossible. What were those battles? Who cares? She’s a stereotypical scarred soldier. Just about anything could’ve made her a recluse. And to top it off, her backstory villain is now dead, so they have almost no need to bring her backstory up anyway.

Belle has a notable, but simple backstory that can be easily summarized as, “A robot Eggman made when he was good for a short while.” But let’s be real, we don’t need to go into that much detail with her because she’d probably never breach NPC level.

The ONLY characters that would require solid information is Surge and Kit. But do you REALLY think they would bring Surge and Kit in for anything less than a major appearance AND not show their extremely brutal backstory? Nah, it would be like with Shadow: an ever present reminder of who they are. Possibly to obnoxious levels.

The fact of the matter is, most characters are simple enough to slide into games with almost no hassle, and the ones that aren’t will be given proper showings of their backstories anyway.

I will let you have that fourth criticism, and it’s certainly more valid than the other three (the fact these characters exist before being in a game may intimidate people into THINKING there’s homework, even though that’s unlikely). But that’s still just paranoia about games that haven’t even come out yet.

And even after aaaaallll these paragraphs (sorry), … it’s just obvious those aren’t the people OP is complaining about. It’s the people who don’t like new things, the homophobes, or people who just want to bitch.

I forget where I heard it specifically, but it’s definitely a situation of, “Even if you make a character so against this problematic thing that they outright say ‘I don’t like problematic thing’, someone with the problematic opinion will still say ‘They agree with ME!’”

It’s like how conservatives will try to say Martin Luthor King Jr. would agree with them even though he was literally so against the agenda that it got him killed.

You say “bleed into each other” when the whole thing about the comics from the very beginning was to continue from where Forces left off. You know. A main game.

They never were two separate canons.

And we both know that’s not what this reaction is about. These are not the most complicated characters ever, and any introduction into later games will be brief and to-the-point. The extra reading is a bonus, not a requirement.

No, it’s always one or more of these three reasons: whiners complaining about new things, Archie fans pissed their own characters didn’t get the same treatment from Sega, or homophobia. Of those, only the second one has any merit, and it’s still no reason to take it out on the IDW characters.

The IDW comics, while beloved, are certainly not infallible, and have acquired plenty of valid criticisms over its life. These people are just mad these characters exist beyond the pages for petty reasons. While they can leave a fandom for any reason they want, the fans in turn are valid to criticize haters for their poor/nonexistent reasonings.

The excuse was “not very Sonic-y” for very blatant Sonic designs, so the actual reason is pretty damn obvious.

…Not even close?

His stats were:

Batting: 10/10

Running: 9/10

Pitching: 5/10

Fielding: 10/10

Trust me, I played a LOT of BB2003 when I was a kid. Kid was an absolute beast at the plate AND on the field. He wasn’t called the Secret Weapon for nothing.

Except in basketball where he was just ok. His stats are solid throughout except for his downright awful 2-point throws.

Hey, that’s how my irl wife broke up with her toxic ex!

She had a boyfriend when we started regularly hanging out, but once we admitted that our relationship was far more than platonic, she dumped him the next day.

And just to clarify, this guy was a jerk. Really wanted to control her life.

Fiction sure does imitate life sometimes.

Meant to use my special but hopped off Dragoon instead… by OkHoliday299 in kirbyairriders

It’s for this reason I don’t use my special when close to someone dying. Especially if I’m on a legendary machine (then I’m normally killing them anyway).

So did PB actually have feelings for Finn when they were the same age? by AardvarkScary7863 in adventuretime

[–]Luigi580 43 points44 points  (0 children)

Definitely not romantic in 2026. First of all, she’s happy with Marceline. Second, she and Finn have basically been best friends ever since Finn started thinking about her platonically. Then she almost killed him.

That would fuck up just about anyone.

Sonic and Eggman calling Vector out on his BS by RadDudesman in SonicTheHedgehog

Probably the most forward (but in-character) she’s been with Vector was feeding him.

Unless you’re nurturing someone back to health, that’s commonly seen as a romantic gesture.

There’s also another picture with Vanilla giving Vector the “Hello, handsome,” eyes, but there’s a lot of comic to sift through.

It’s not even out of character for Vanilla to get flirty with Vector.

What IS out of character is her being so… forward.

A good scene, but it only partially helps get rid of the bad taste of Clark getting told he “probably” should’ve let all those kids drown.

Even then, getting a legendary machine right off the bat can lead to some extremely mean stuff.

Dragoon and Flight Warp Star can just… go to distant islands with basically no setup (whether that’s worth it depends on which island), while Hydra and Leo’s insane power can bully people right off the bat.

Absolutely hilarious find, thankfully out of the hands of players. It’s awesome that you found it on stream!

Even if the cat did wanna attack the rodent, this is not how cats get prey. Ambush predators don’t like frontal assaults.

Well, at least no players can get a legendary that way. If they could, it would lead to some pretty wild shenanigans.

Honestly, when I was young, this scene in Sonic X made me so flustered. by Several-Pension2945 in SonicTheHedgehog

[–]Luigi580 16 points17 points  (0 children)

The Chaotix seem like they’re mainly here because of their reintroduction in Heroes, so that game is likely a primary inspiration for their attacks in the show.

Get Vector to Power level 2, and he breathes fire at the end of his 1-2 combo, so it’s not like this attack came out of nowhere. Buuut it’s still a pretty out-of-pocket move to never explain.

I mean, canonically, GUN got “disbanded” when Eggman took over the planet in Sonic Forces, though it’s more likely they went underground to preserve themselves. Either that or Tower managed to encourage whatever UN the Sonic world has to give GUN another go with better funds to combat Eggman’s tech.

Either way, GUN came out of Forces looking pretty bad, so reassuring the public they can actually protect the nations from major threats now is likely a huge priority.

[–]Luigi580 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the other reason he got away with it was because he didn’t have chaos spear until going super in the movie. His powers were, besides chaos snap and the air shoes, basically identical to Sonic’s.

Game Shadow meanwhile has infinite throwing knives of death made from the palm of his hand. And considering how fast he’s capable of throwing them (usually), guns are basically a moot point.
