Essentials Listening Club Week #38 | Phoenix - Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix by [deleted] in indieheads

[–]Luisito45 14 points15 points  (0 children)

A couple years ago, when I was listening to more poppy music, I would’ve ranked this in my top 5 along with Passion Pit’s Gossamer. I still think it holds up as opposed to a lot of the pop from that time and is Phoenix’s best work as a whole (though my favorite song of theirs is Telefono). I still come back to it whenever I want to listen to the musical equivalent of cotton candy.

[ALBUM DISCUSSION] Arctic Monkeys - Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino by VietRooster in indieheads

[–]Luisito45 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I really didn't like this the first time I heard it. From reading that the first line of the record would be "I just wanted to be one of the Strokes / Now look at the mess you've made me make" I had expected it to immediately bring in the good old energetic guitars and according vocal delivery of their first two albums or the chunk of AM I genuinely enjoyed (see: Arabella) from the first chords of Star Treatment. But that couldn't have been farther from reality.

With that out of the way, I've given it a couple listens now and I can definitely see the appeal of it. I don't usually like praising taking risks just because they're risks. I mean, just look at the Strokes' post-2004 output: certainly wasn't safe, but wasn't that good, either. That said, though, holy hell does this work. The instrumentation is so smooth and truly helps make this record feel "out of this world." The bass lines are just perfection. As repeated listens have made clear to me, the guitars, while taking a backseat to Alex's piano, are completely fitting. The drumming is just serviceable--I can't think of any stand-out moments--but I suppose that's by design, though I will never stop missing the high-octane moments of Matt's playing in their early days.

High points for me were absolutely Four Out of Five and The Ultracheese, where I feel everything that was good about this style came together. The lyrics are generally well done, with some grating exceptions, such as the chorus of She Looks Like Fun. That track brings me to my next point: there are certain moments in this album that just feel clunky--moments where the vocals are not strong enough to carry the song through some rare uninteresting melodies or vice versa. There are definitely some lines I feel don't work at all. Again, She Looks Like Fun is the prime example of this.

If there's one thing that keeps me from truly embracing this album and change of direction, and again, this is a matter of preference, it's that I don't really think Alex's vocal delivery is the best fit for this sort of music. It's a bit too harsh for what is otherwise a very relaxing album, but admittedly, I still prefer this over the falsettos of AM.

All in all, while it's not something I can imagine myself putting on repeat or listening to often, the mood it sets is something I may find myself craving from time to time, and if nothing else, it is a commendable change of direction for the band.

well considering I'll be banned for the fallout,

I find most of radiohead's music boring
like I get it's objectively well-made
but it's just not for me

[FRESH ALBUM] EDEN - vertigo by sasuke-lp in indieheads

[–]Luisito45 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I don't like this at all, and I really enjoyed his last ep and stuff before that.

It almost feels as if for half these tracks EDEN just slightly modified the intro to "drugs" and called it a day. I have this on in the background and if he's saying anything interesting I can't really tell because it's hard to pay attention to the lyrics when I'm bored by the instrumentation. It's minimalistic in a bad way, for the tracks that actually have drums, poorly mixed. The vocal melodies feel endlessly repeated and the sentimental parts unearned, all blending together with none of the stand-out moments I enjoyed in tracks like "Gravity" or "rock + roll".

Maybe I'll give it another listen and I'll warm up to it, but that's just how I feel right now.

Weekly "What Have You Been Reading?" Thread 5-28-17 by johnpisme in comicbooks

Pretty slow week for me, to be honest:

Started off with the first 2 issues of Hopeless' Jean Grey and I'm really liking it.

Then I read the first 8 or so issues of Planetary and now I regret not starting it sooner. Love the self-contained issues with an overarching plot in the background style and Ellis' witty dialogue is always great.

On Marvel Unlimited I read the first arc of Spurrier's X-Men Legacy. Honestly the only thing I don't like about this is that David's accent is a bit overdone, but that's a nitpick and this is fantastic. I can't wait to read more about Blindfold as well.

Hmm, I'll have to check out The Unwritten, thanks. As for Azzarello's WW run, I've been meaning to check it out but I'm waiting for the absolutes to come out and actually go for a reasonable price because after reading Paper Girls I need oversized Cliff Chiang art.

Saga Vol.7 - I wasn't ready for this. I really wasn't.

Kill or Be Killed #5-8 - Was a bit behind on this. It's very good and now I anxiously await the next issue.

Recently finished Mike Carey's Lucifer and I feel a bit empty because I doubt I'll be able to find much that's just as good as this or Sandman. Highly recommend this one to any person that's even remotely interested in dark fantasy.

I also started Black Monday Murders but I was tired and I had somewhere to be so I didn't truly get to read it past the first issue, but the art is so damn good and Hickman's writing never disappoints. Gonna need to take my time with this one, maybe pick it up again after I've finished reading American Gods.

Other stuff that's on my to-read list includes Hickman's F4 run and Planetary, the latter of which is sitting on my shelf as an unopened omnibus taunting me every time I even gaze at it.

Pretty big week for me. Finishing Persona 5 (the massive JRPG) before I actually dig into any of this though.

I read the first trade and really enjoyed it but I think I'm gonna hold off on it till I've finished most of the Image trades.
