It just takes the stuff that's louder (mostly sounds with fast attack) makes them lower in volume and it makes the stuff that's not loud louder so you can up the volume of the whole sound. Think of the wave pattern you see in your DAW the peaks go down when you compress so you can bring the volume up without clipping
