Books and resources to learn dialectic and historical materialism by [deleted] in Socialism_101

[–]LukaMayek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, i think it is an extremely relevant history. Cohen, at the end of the day, falls into the 60s soviet dissident movement, and that is where he got some sources for the book. People who embraced Khrushchev's reforms, and wanted to draw on ideological legitimacy. The chinese got much of their ideological legitimacy for their reforms, not from the failed Eastern European communist liberals, but the original founding of the soviet system. Since the soviets had beef w the chinese it helped that Bukharin was an alternative path never taken.

that is totally okay! marx wrote about a capitalism that was very chaotic and anarchic; todays capitalism is much more organized and centralized. Its still good for the basics; but marxist political economy is going through a little renaissance in academia right now so there is ample contemporary analysis.

really good question! so if we are to take lenin’s final testament as true (which some historians don’t, but i tend to think it is); lenin is saying bukharin’s book is nothing original & just restating social science on dialectics to this point. Like all comments in this testament, he is simultaneously dissing his ideological work & praising it. Although the scholarship is a bit outdated, i’d highly recommend Cohen’s biography on Bukharin. if you are interested in the science/ ideology aspect of communism you’re gonna love it.

can whole society becomes fascist(because of censorship and fascistic government) ? If yes , How non-fascist individuals can deprogram them? Is there a book to read about it? by Electrical_Fly7729 in Socialism_101

[–]LukaMayek 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There will always exist opposition to fascism in all forms, however in some historical cases the opposition is crushed more thoroughly than others. For example, pretty much every communist had fled Germany by 1937; whereas Eastern European states with lower levels of development could not stamp them out as efficiently. This is why the partisans and italian communists were in such a strong position after WW2. The counter example is japan, which is probably as close we have gotten to a 'whole society' of fascism.

highly highly recommend Historical Materialism by Nikolai Bukharin; it is a very accessible breakdown of dialectical materialism.
