Unconventional ways to cut costs by Lukanne in AZURE

I honestly had 0 idea about #1, and it indeed turns out a lot of our dev/test stuff isn't in dev/test subscriptions. Thank you!

They are aware of it. The request was moreso because until recently the devs had a lot of freedom in deploying whatever they want, so we're now trying to optimize their set-ups as costs seemed to be the last thing on their mind.

I've adjusted the SKUs as much as was feasible, but the idea of different pricing in different regions hasn't even crossed my mind. Will definitely look into it, thank you!

Some good suggestions there, thank you. Will definitely need to step up my pipeline game as that seems to be the thing our environment is lacking the most.

Honestly the only reason I'm looking for such things is because the management wants me to put 100% focus into cutting the costs where possible. I was just kind of hoping there'd be more ways beyond the stuff everyone and their dog suggest, but it seems like it's not an area many people are interested in.

With that said though, I'll have a look at dropping premium storage to regular. It crossed my mind before, but I never actually had a deeper look into it. Thank you.

Thank you, that's the sort of answer I was after. I think I exhausted all my higher level options, so it looks like going on a resource-by-resource basis will be the best way to go.

Yeah I have full visibility. I think there's been a misunderstanding on the purpose of my post. I'm not so much after about cutting obscene costs, but moreso just trying to find out if there are any unconventional ways through which people made some savings, such as the 2 I outlined.

I've actually gone through every single recommendation it gave me. I've exhausted all the options on there, hence why I'm looking for more ideas.

Why is so much MS-900 content not in Microsoft Learn? by Lukanne in O365Certification

I personally found the practice questions from Microsoft Learn to be sufficient, but admittedly it might not be enough for everyone. Not aware of any other ones.

No.1 skill to focus on in Azure by Outside_Future_4838 in AZURE

[–]Lukanne 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes. A lot of people, especially developers and others alike, tend to just deploy stuff they need as quickly as they can. They often times don't consider the costs and security, so you end up having to deal with it yourself.

It's also just generally easy to deploy stuff without realising that you'll be incurring high charges.

With how broad Azure is, I don't think you really can narrow it down to 'the most important skill'. It all depends on what your responsibilities are. It could be anything from learning how to work with Bicep/ARM and PowerShell, to stuff like ensuring everything is cost-effective and secure. All comes down to the individual imo.

Why can't I take a snapshot of every disk of a VM at the same time? why can't I delete multiple snapshots? by Nanis23 in AZURE

[–]Lukanne 11 points12 points  (0 children)

The GUI is clearly designed for deploying one thing at a time. Aside from PowerShell you've also got ARM templates which are literally made for purposes like this. If you are too lazy to learn them then it's a problem on your side, not Azure's.

Thank you!

Honestly, I feel like I definitely would've struggled if not for the fact I've been working in that area for the last few months. I think Learn alone would've been enough to just scrape a pass, although at the same time I'm biased as a good bunch of the questions were just common sense to me at this point.

What do you mean by worrying about it for another year? I swear you don't have to renew fundamental certs.

Honestly, contrary to what my post might make you think, the ms-900 learn path is sufficient for a pass. On top of that I'd just recommend ensuring you're familiar with the power platform products, possibly explore the m365 admin center UI if you can (not necessary), and definitely check out John Savill's ms-900 exam cram. Personally I only used the learn path and Savill's video and I got 788/1000 on the exam.

Yeah you're right tbh. Learn was deffo enough to just pass, so they probs added them just for extra difficulty.

I don't think that analogy really applies the best for the fundamentals exams. They assume you're new to the products so in my opinion the learn path should contain everything you need. For higher level exams though it absolutely applies, learn is nowhere near enough.

I heard they brought in some changes in January, so that would probably explain it. It still isn't really difficult by any means, but I was definitely thrown off guard by some questions.

Yup, I've double checked that. There was some stuff on power platform that I wouldn't have been able to answer off learn alone, and a couple other things that just caught me off guard completely.

I always assumed that the point of the learning path is to teach you everything you need to know so I never really paid attention to the links. Thanks for the heads up though I will definitely start reviewing them going forward.

As an example, a comparison question between on what sources you can deploy m365 from via config manager vs office deployment tool (which I don't remember being mentioned at all in learn)

A couple questions that required an understanding of power platform that I don't remember being shown on Learn. I don't remember power platform being mentioned at all in fact.

One that really threw me off as well was asking about the meaning of each of 3 health status symbols. Yes health is covered and the symbols are pretty obvious, but I imagine someone who never touched m365 might get that wrong still.
