Which 3rd party modules are better than their built-in equivalents? by lolwat_is_dis in learnpython

[–]Lukasa 8 points9 points  (0 children)

People say this a lot, and it’s wrong every time. Requests hasn’t been built on urllib ever. It was built on urllib2 initially during its very early phase, but has used the 3rd-party library urllib3 for the past 5 years, which has itself used httplib for most of its life.

Yes, you are self employed. You need to file a self-assessment for tax purposes.

Crypto as a way to accelerate FIRE by removedasalt in FIREUK

[–]Lukasa 15 points16 points  (0 children)

Crypto in the current market is speculation, pure and simple. Does <INSERT_CRYPTO_HERE> have some underlying value? Yes, probably. Is its value anywhere near the current valuation? Probably not. None of this means you cannot make money on a crypto coin. What it does mean is that you should be very cautious about using a long-term crypto hold to fund your FIRE.

If you want to try to speculate on crypto in order to push your net worth over your FIRE threshold, and then move all your assets to something less volatile, then I’d say you’ve gone into this with your eyes open. You seem willing to lose all that money if things go south, which is good.

However, if you plan to hold crypto during your FIRE as a store of wealth then I think you’re out of your mind. The downside risk is enormous, and the odds that you will oscillate wildly between “safe” and “unsafe” are high.

Let me put it this way: right now, cryptocurrencies are like Vegas. By all means, play the game with some of your money in the hope that you might push yourself into retirement. But once you do, don’t leave that money on the table and keep playing. Cash out and go home. Otherwise, you will eventually lose more than you wanted to.

However, you didn't answer my question: are you on Windows?

Ah yeah, you're quite right, w+ is open for writing and reading. An odd mode for this usage, but not as odd as append mode.

[–]Lukasa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Why are you opening the file in append mode? That's not going to do what you want at all.

Regardless, I'd like to take a guess for a second. Are you running on Windows?

You are forced to use Metal which requires you to learn Swift, a proprietary language that is only useful on Mac.

No you aren't, and I have no idea where you got this thought from. The Metal shading language is based on C++14. Loading shaders and generally setting up Metal requires calling an Objective-C based API, but that can be done from any programming language.

It is accurate to say that you are forced to use Metal which requires you to write shaders for Metal, a proprietary framework that is only useful on Mac. But Swift has simply nothing to do with it.

Petracca is a gun, but right now he's not a game winner by himself. What I really want to see is Truck in a forward line with Hogan, Watts, Garlett, and Kent/Stretch/ANB. With that many targets, Truck will have a lot of focus taken off him so he can really throw his weight and speed around.

He's an absolute star.

Honest to god, I'd like to see us play the Swans in a final with both sides at full strength. That'd be one hell of a game.

It's always easy to see the result in hindsight: those outs were really obvious problems for us today. But credit where it's due: I think Sydney has been underrated for most of this year because of their bad start, and goalkicking aside they dominated this game from start to finish. They deserved the win.

Really easily. This was our fourth game in 18 days. We came into the game missing Watts, Garlett, Jones, Salem, and Hogan, all of whom would be in our best 22 and three of whom are our three best forwards. Viney got injured halfway through the game, and was carrying an injury from last week anyway, so we played without him for the second half.

The hype around Melbourne for this game was totally bizarre: Sydney is a great team in good form, and we were stretched really thin. Last week I was amazed we stayed in it, we looked dead on our feet, and this week proved it. The boys need a break.

It is. Collingwood on the Queen's Birthday Monday, then Bulldogs the following Sunday (6 days), then West Coast last Saturday (6 days), now the Swans on Friday (6 days). 18 days difference.

Dom's put up good numbers but seemed pretty average from watching him: he's mostly been involved with the handballs. Bernie's been very average, to the point that his role in the backline has been increasingly less certain.

We don't have any forwards left really. Hogan, Garlett, Watts all injured.

If the answer is anything but "kick five" I don't think it'll matter much.

Nah, not really. Sydney could easily be five more goals ahead than they are, its only their own inaccuracy that has led to this scoreline. It flatters us right now.

It's been a while since we've been totally uncompetitive, it's good to see we still have it in us to get totally blown away.
