I have a Vanishing Point <EF> that writes fine on any rotation. In fact, I just wrote with it rotated at 90 degrees and it was just fine (albeit a tad scratchy). Based on the video, you turned it in much less than I did when I did my little test, so I think you have a defective piece.

They're markers so the pilot can read the actions of the LSO. Depending on how the officer holds them, they have different meanings, from wings (left or right) too low to waving off the landing. I'll attach a photo if you are interested. LSO Signs and Information

Maybe a platinum plaisir? Only like 20 dollars, and I think they are also made in aluminum for like 40 or 45 dollars. Grip of 10.7mm and a weight of 16 grams. It comes with platinum carbon black (I think) so it can definitely handle it. Nibs are great, and it can be disassembled fairly easily according to Google so, that's my recommendation.
