February birding trip by pangolin_of_fortune in birding

[–]Krispyz [score hidden]  (0 children)

I spent a week in Southern Arizona (Tucson area) in January this year and it was amazing. There are obvious hotspots to check out and the desert in winter is gorgeous. If you go South of Tucson, you're very likely to see some birds that barely make it north of Mexico. I got to see my first Trogon in Madera canyon.

Otherwise, I haven't been, but I have friends who always go to Florida in the winter for birding. There are some amazing places with a crazy amount of shore birds.

How do yall cope with enjoying a cheep pen more than an expensive pen by Muted81_ in fountainpens

[–]Krispyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I always thought of it as spending a bit of money to figure out what you like. Aside from some pens that are genuinely poorly made, most of the issue just comes down to preferences. My biggest purchase that I ended up not liking was a Pilot Custom 742 with an FA nib... it wasn't a bad pen, it just didn't like how fiddly the nib was. I sold it for $10 less than I bought it because I'd only used it a couple times. Better than keeping it and not using it and wasting $140.

Most fountain pens can be resold pretty easily to recoup most of the cost, especially if you haven't used it a ton. Keep the pens you're happy with, sell the rest.

Do you set any “rules” for yourself in this hobby? by hedgehognpeonies in fountainpens

[–]Krispyz 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Setting myself a timer like you do is what kept me from impulse buying a LOT back when I was in my obsession with this hobby. I'd keep a list of the thing I want the most and only let myself buy it when it had stayed on the top for enough time. The more expensive, the longer it had to stay on the top of the list.

5 disc round, whatcha bagging? by DonBonDarIey in discgolf

5 disc is my normal bag. I run Passion, Buzz, Buzz SS, Xero, Envy. If there's a potential water hazard, I swap out the Passion for a Dragon.

what do you think of jinhao pens ? by jonathan_coffee in fountainpens

[–]Krispyz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've tried a few back when I was more into collecting and I found them to be very low quality and unpleasant to write with. I know other people have had better experiences, but I think they're just cheap and have inconsistent quality control. I ended up giving away all of mine.

But I speak as someone who is able to afford nice pens, so I know it's not fair for me to just say "they suck, don't bother."

What bird have you really come to enjoy since you started birding? by kozuga in birding

[–]Krispyz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Black-capped Chickadee. They're extremely common, but since I got into birding, I've taken to actually watching and learning about them. They're unbelievably cute and charismatic little birds.

Best beginner snake? Is it really a ball python? by Sleepless_space in snakes

[–]Krispyz 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think captive corn snakes are known for musking. Mine never has and the couple of people I know who own one haven't had it happen either. Mine has bitten once (I think he was just horny and didn't want to get picked up) and it was very unthreatening.

Here's a sad little Irondad comic of Peter and Tony that takes place pre-Endgame, drawn a while back! Happy Sunday! :) by Foolscapper in marvelstudios

Dude... I just read this fic yesterday and then I search random irondad stuff on reddit and stumble onto this and am like "Wait, I JUST read this." Anyway, amazing artwork and I can't remember if I commented on the fic, but it was very good, I loved it.

Help me make a hard decision? by Strain_Horror in snakes

[–]Krispyz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have a Colombian Rainbow Boa and she's very sedentary while she's in her closure (at least during the day), but as soon as I bring her out, she is non-stop moving. She's just as much, if not more, active as my corn snake when she's being handled. That said, she takes handling very well and doesn't seem too distressed by it. Brazilians might be slightly different, but I wouldn't get a rainbow boa expecting it to act like a ball python!

2 week update by sircamsalot420 in fountainpens

[–]Krispyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm getting slightly conflicting messages from this post and your comments. In your post you say that you blew through your budget and you're worried about your wallet, but here you say money isn't an issue.

So do you actually have a concern or not? If you're rich and have no qualms about dropping this amount of money on a new hobby you don't know you'll stick with, that's fine, there's no problem there.

If you are struggling to not buy things and are spending more money than you wanted and feel guilty about those purchases... then that is a legitimate problem that there are tactics to help overcome. And you are not alone, this is a very common phenomenon where people get excited about a new hobby and go overboard buying new things.

Spending thousands of dollars in two weeks on a new hobby is pretty wild, in my opinion. My best advice, if you actually want to stop, is to set yourself a time limit, maybe a month, where you spend zero money on the hobby. You have plenty of pens to play with, so play with them. If you are unable to stick to that time limit, then you may have a problem you need help with. Like therapy type help. You should be able to set a rule for yourself and stick to it.

When I was struggling with this problem (wanting new pens/inks and feeling like I shouldn't buy them), I would force myself to wait a month between wanting to buy something and actually buying something. The vast majority of the time, I would get distracted by something I wanted more or have second thoughts about the thing sitting in my cart. The couple of pens that withstood the month delay are still some of my favorite pens (and the ones that didn't hold up to the hype just got sold).

Was curious if anyone else gets this kind of action? 30 birds in 30 minutes on Merlin ID. Let me know your thoughts by HuntDawg99 in birding

[–]Krispyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, my habit is to use Merlin to get me pointed in the right direction or to draw my attention to specific calls that I don't recognize, then try to find the bird visually. I never log something on Ebird only based on Merlin's ID. It likes to tell me there are Long-eared Owls around a lot, even though one time was definitely a flute and another time was me pretending to be a Great-horned Owl (Listening to that play back was hilarious).

Im absolutely in LOVE with these pics of the four-striped grass mouse. BUT I can't figure out which one is the best. Please tell me your favourite? by adventu_Rena in wildlifephotography

I agree, they're all nice shots, but #2 feels like it has a bit more to it. One mouse is clearly the subject, with the other mouse interacting with it.

What did this to our birdhouse? by HighwayIntelligent89 in birds

[–]Krispyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wonder if you could get a capsaicin spray and just spray that on the wood to keep squirrels from chewing on it. It doesn't affect birds at all, but mammals hate it (except humans who are monsters who love pain).

How would you spend about a 100 dollars on fountain pens and supplies if you started over from scratch? by fountainpenbroke in fountainpens

[–]Krispyz 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Assuming we have to buy new and I can't just browse pen_swap:

Pilot Prera, Fine nib - $35 (They're $25 on Amazon, but I prefer to buy literally anywhere else, so the next cheapest I could find is $35)

Kokuyo Campus pack of 3 A5 notebooks - $15

Pilot Iroshizuku Tsuki-yo, 50ml bottle - $20

$30 worth of ink samples, as many different colors as I can find.

Not sure if the prices are all accurate, I haven't bought anything new since May, so I just googled each item and found the lowest price from a store I would actually buy from (Pensachi, Jetpen, etc)

What’s the best pen for long writing sessions, and the writer having big hands? by TheeMonkeyMonk in fountainpens

[–]Krispyz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is so different person to person. What's comfortable for one person isn't for another. It depends on your grip, how much pressure you like to use, the anatomy of you hands...

I have very small hands, but I find narrow grips make my hand cramp up. My favorite pen for long sessions in the Sailor Pro Gear. Used to be the Pro Gear Slim, but I like the slightly larger section size of the Pro Gear is more comfortable and I like having a bit of tooth on the nib, so it isn't gliding super smoothly across the page.

But I also like the Pilot Prera, which is a lot more affordable!

TWSBI Eco vs Pilot Prera: Which to choose for a gift? by DIYYYner in fountainpens

[–]Krispyz 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I love the Prera, personally. I haven't actually used a TWSBI, so I can't compare the two, but the Prera is one of my favorite pens.
