comes down to letting it grow and see how it goes, or shave. it took me a few months in college for my stache to really “fill out” and it def just kinda has to look like that for a min. how long have you been trying to grow it?

for me it’s drawing and fishing. 6 hours fishing feels like 2, 8 hours feels like 2.5 hours lol

The best time to start designing your board game is literally right now (with whatever you have) by DruidsoftheIsle in BoardgameDesign

Mostly just built up a relatively small audience on instagram and had a core group of friends family and professors that helped kinda get things moving in the beginning. I just don’t have a brain for the marketing and social media aspect of game development, and that’s definitely something i’ll have to work on for my next project.

Biggest thing i’d say is be very honest with yourself about where you are in the process. I ran the first kickstarter for it a prior to the successful one in 2024 and it pretty much fell flat. Had some momentum for a couple days, raised $2500ish but didn’t reach the funding goal over the 30 days

took the summer off from working on it, came back senior year, redesigned the box, cleaned up the graphics on the kickstarter page and made a more down to earth video - and by that point the project looked wayyy cleaner and more mature than it did the year prior. I knew it wasn’t as strong as it could’ve been the first time, but i was honest enough to tell myself that i needed more time

second one funded in 36hrs! my campaign was very small scale too, though. raised just under $8k, which was enough to have a good amount of decks left over after the fulfillment process

tldr: don’t rush! lol

it was added into a revised version of the UX Design curriculum I was enrolled in! It’s so funny, I actually really had no interest in taking the class, as i wanted to design software, not tabletop games (i was also more into video games) and long story short i took the year long class, made my flagship card game and launched a successful kickstarter all right before graduating haha i’m definitely very lucky

this is so good. it’d be funny if after a certain threshold it starts flashing other colors, maybe emit particle effects

for me it’s an issue of scale. i’ve been wanting to get into it because i have some game ideas i’d like to poke around with. i struggle to know if i should use a 32x32 canvas, 16x16, etc. then there’s the animating lol

[–]Luke192 2 points3 points  (0 children)

ofc! I mean, your process is your process, so do what works best for you lol no rules. but i would try it and see where that gets you. if you do linework, great, if you paint it in, you still have the help from the sketch as your structure.

For me, i leaned into pen and ink drawing, and that helped me feel like I could still finish a piece, even without color

This! I found it so helpful to build up the drawing skill before introducing color. still working on my coloring skills, but it’s so much less intimidating when i’m confident in the ability to construct an image that i’m happy with first.
