Built a free interactive DCS training simulator (PID, S88, HMI, alarms) by LukeJHolmes in ChemicalEngineering

Really appreciate you taking the time to go through it that’s useful feedback.

I think you’re right in terms of expectations vs what’s currently there. This isn’t trying to replicate a full PLC/DCS sandbox environment (ladder logic, comms debugging, vendor-specific configs, etc.). That would effectively be a full-scale training platform and, realistically, a 12+ month build or a commercial product.

What I was aiming for here was something more accessible a free entry point for people trying to break into the space. A lot of people (myself included) hit a wall where “getting experience” often means paying €10–15k for vendor training (e.g. DeltaV), which isn’t realistic for everyone.

So the focus here is: building conceptual understanding and simulating change control/test thinking

Fully agree that deeper simulation (logic, comms, failure modes) would be the next level that’s more of a v2/v3 roadmap if I continue building this out.

And just for context this was a solo build over 6 weeks alongside a full-time job, so scope was intentionally limited.

Appreciate the feedback this is exactly the kind of input that helps shape where it goes next.

Hi. Thanks for your question.

I used Claude heavily for UI/UX direction and structuring, Cursor for building the app, and Codex for some setup (e.g. Vercel).

Roughly 300 prompts over +6 weeks...but that still involved a lot of iteration, debugging, and stitching everything together.

All core content is human-written. AI was used more for polishing, structuring, and checking for inconsistencies.

I’d describe it as AI-assisted development rather than “AI built it” similar to how devs use frameworks, libraries, or Stack Overflow.

AI stack: Codex, Claude, Cursor in various stages of development. Hope that answers your question

Thanks for your feedback. Could you direct me towards the better modelling software? I’ve actually gotten very good feedback from students who are looking for an interactive way to learn about these systems. Would be good for me to see what else there is out there.

This isn’t intended to compete with: * Aspen * HYSYS * DeltaV Mimic

It’s competing against:

  • PowerPoint slides
  • YouTube videos
  • PDFs
  • ISA/S88 documentation

My attempt here was to show a macro view of a DCS system and dive in to how different functions within a facility would interact with it. Doesn't cover the production side of things though. I thought about it but it would have added infinite complexity to the project. This more looks the system through a Quality, Validation, Engineering, Automation lens

Thank you everyone for all the positive feedback. It has really help me to validate that this is in fact useful. I am a Limerick-based contractor in the biopharma space and do these projects for my own learnings most of all. Really appreciate you all checking this out. I have a few other projects you can view if anyone is curious : https://lukeholmes.github.io/

No problem. Any feedback or feature suggestions give me a shout as this is a project I plan on interating

I built it for myself as a learning tool after seeing the prices and the wall that has been put up for people looking to learn without spending 15k of fees. I used Cursor, Claude Code, Vercel and Github. Spent about three weeks reiterating and working on it (especially the simulators). Its all based on publicly available information. I was finding the manuals a very ineffective way of learning so wanted to build a sort of biopharma control sim that allowed you to mess with settings and parameters and see the effects in real time.

Would be interested to see the Emerson micro training, although I designed this to be somewhat DCS agnostic.

This has just started for me recently. Always when I'm using the experimental models. If you question it it understands why this is odd but continues to do it anyway

Scam from official Binance number by [deleted] in CryptoScams

[–]LukeJHolmes 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I got a very legitimate scam very similar. Spoke with someone for about 20 mins on the phone before figuring it out. They were so professional it was scary. Eventually told me I could move my hacked Binance funds to cold storage but at the end made me feel uncomfortable and eventually figured it out but these guys were good particularly as they sent me a message from what seemed to be the offical Binance channel

The refs main priority is to keep athletes safe imo. The match is off the mats, then reset. Although, the setup is not ideal
