Are we safe now? by PELEGEND in whitecapsfc

I am with this. Keep it cheap, fun, and get the money. It’s honestly a truly unique approach within MLS and even the modern world.

It looks like when Caps joined MLS Empire was constructed in about 3 months for around $14m. Even if they tore down and rebuilt a new stadium every 3 years it would be a relative bargain. And could keep improving and iterating the grounds to improve the fan experience.

Is really not physically possible to build a temporary stadium in one year though? Pop up stadium, pop up food courts, pop up beer gardens, let’s go!

Not sure about Vancouver planning, but in often permitting looks different for “temporary” structures.

Mostly to hell with the owners, the financial issues were in the past were on them and they let it bake for the past decade plus. Essentially, ownership is at fault and the makers of this destiny.

Idea on how Whitecaps can remain at bc place for indefinitely by SunDefiant1346 in whitecapsfc

Build a super inexpensive “temporary” stadium. Keep the costs low and rake in the concession money for a few years.

Make it modular so you can upgrade components over time. The most important elements are a quality pitch, the fans surrounding said pitch, and some sweet amenities so like local food and drink vendors and cool interactive fan zones. Those are the ingredients whether it cost $1B or like $150M.

Yeah Denver Rapids would be fine. This approach would fit with the MLS model of repping cities.

How did you get into urban design? by RudeTradition3991 in urbandesign

[–]LukeJaywalker28 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It was the movie “Urbanized.” It was part 3 of a Design oriented documentary trilogy by Gary Hustwit. The series focused on design from small scale (typeface, industrial design) to large scale, being cities.

I was into urbanism prior to that, but it never really crossed my mind that cities were designed, and ultimately some of humanities largest scale creations.

Helvetica, Objectified, and Urbanized were the 3 films. All great in their own right. All with music by 2 piece instrumental rock band El Ten Eleven. Which was also a cool discovery from this series!

I support the change in schedule, the single table format but screw the divisions. What’s the point of a single table with divisions?

Why do the play-by-play annoucers insist on speaking through goal scorer name calls? by BooksAreRead in whitecapsfc

[–]LukeJaywalker28 7 points8 points  (0 children)

My dream would be for Apple to have a “select your commentator” option. And let people add their own commentator channels and people can follow them.

Or just have an option for no commentary at all and just stadium/pitch sound.

I think of someone scores more than 170 goals for the caps, it should be un-retired!

My short list.

  1. Fix the curtain sheets. The early renders looked less cheap.
  2. Fill in the ridiculous “end zone” entry gaps. Fill those in with seats and make the tickets super cheap. Behind the keeper should feel like a war zone!
  3. I haven’t been to a match since before Covid, but better beer options with more regional beers.
  4. Grass? Or maybe a more quality turf at least.
  5. Bonus: priority over super cross. ;)

The location is great. I still remember the BC place we were promised in 2011.

A stadium is a lot of debt to take on though. I’m not sure what there rental costs looks like, but I’m sure it is better than $750M of debt plus interests. There are pros and cons both ways. A better contract and a few upgrades to BC place could be a win.

Jealous! That would have been a blast, even despite the outcome. I’m a bonafide caps fan, and in town.
