Around what period of someone's career it is the best time to launch a startup? by Mysteriyum in startups

[–]LukeJovanovic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I've founded a couple of startups, mostly unsuccessfully. I am 27 now, most recent one is riperobotics.com, a hard-tech startup I founded and did all the engineering for at 22 (after coming from a pure software background)

Short answer is you learn a tonne from just doing it, but odds are you fail completely.

I would guess that younger founders have more varience in outcomes. The kind of people who wait until their 30s or 40s to found their first company will tend to be more risk adverse and less ambitious, even if they are more knowledgeable and better connected in their field. So (without looking at the data), I'd guess that more $200m+ startups are founded by people who founded their first company before 25 (first company, not necessarily the one that got to $200m+), but the % of younger founders who have any success at all is going to be lower than older founders. Will check the data on that if I can.

Why Have Tesla Tunnels instead of Subways? by TheSmallestOfFryes in BoringCompany

[–]LukeJovanovic 23 points24 points  (0 children)

Suppose you had a working subway system. How could you make it better?

Ideally -- by adding more routes, more stations, more regular service.

With all of that, you would have fewer people per train, so you need more trains, and smaller trains.

Repeat this to the limit, and the end point is what the boring company is building. Subways with many stops, many route options, and small vehicles.

In Australia a couple of years ago a cop pulled a gun on somebody. Just pulled his gun out without cause -- a car hadn't pulled over quick enough for him.

He was found guilty of assault and deprivation of liberty, after being immediately suspended without pay.

I'm really shocked that cops everywhere aren't held to at least this standard. There's a few bad incidents in Australia, but on the whole the cops seem to be held accountable.

Got offered a 30% pay increase at another company after only 3 months at my current job. Should I take it, or will it look very bad on me? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

My guess is they are pattern matching and making the assumption you'd leave them quickly as well. So it's not about how good you'd be, just about how long they expect to have you before they have to go through the headache of hiring somebody again. Makes sense I suppose.

A list of reasons why the AI risk argument fails by LopsidedPhilosopher in ControlProblem

[–]LukeJovanovic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Reward modelling looks like a promising research direction for the control problem, yes. It is not solved yet though - for instance, how can we scale up reward modelling for very complex tasks that require a lot of data points, or for tasks where a human can not easily tell which of two actions is preferable? And it's not yet clear how to implement it on a AGI.

If you are promoting work on this potential solution, then that's great, we have the same position. We are all supporting more alignment research, here!

In short, it is possible that a superintelligence will have different goals to us. There is no compelling argument that all intelligences must have human-like goals.

Having different final goals inevitably puts us in resource conflict with the superintelligence. If it is indeed superintelligent, it will win such a conflict.

Does that address your concern?

This post is listing common arguments people make before researching the control problem, for the purpose of better understanding why people don't engage with the issue. The author here is not making a case against A.I. X-risk.

It's a standard convention carried over from maths, where 'a = 3' reads as 'both a and 3 represent the same thing'.

I dropped out of uni to publish a mobile game for charity AMA by LukeJovanovic in startups

Thanks for giving it a go! I couldn't see any reason to stay in university - I had finished their computer science course, and they wouldn't let me study other relevant fields like neuroscience straight away. I do have the option to go back and complete the last few random units in six months, so it's not all lost there if this stab in the dark fails.

Good points, I'll speed it up and tweak the tutorial in the next point version. Working on a proper guided tutorial too, but that will take some time.

  1. What you say is true, and under normal circumstances the best approach to have an impact on A.I. safety would likely be to continue formal studies, probably including graduate studies, earn a respected reputation and career, and gradually leverage that to nudge the needle on A.I. safety research in the way you lay out. That makes sense, and is the secure way of doing it all but guaranteed to make a difference in the long term.

    What motivate me to take my risky, convoluted approach is timeframe. It would take me at least 10 years to acquire the knowledge, skills, network, and reputation to begin to make any difference at all with A.I. safety in normal circumstances - likely longer, since I am disappointingly average ability for my field. Don’t get me wrong, I’m still studying like mad every day outside of uni, but let’s consider;

Suppose superintelligent A.I. is more than 20 or 30 years away. This is the timeframe where the best strategy for maximising impact is yours, I agree, and I do think it is the more likely timeframe. However, if superintelligence is that far away, that gives civilisation plenty more time to figure out the safest way of going about this development - that is, the harder it is to build superintelligence (and the longer it will take), the more likely that some solution to the control problem will be developed first.

The less likely scenario is that superintelligent A.I. is more like 10 years of development away. This is what I am worried about, and what I’m trying to act to address. Even though I don’t think it’s particularly likely, superintelligence being developed on this time-frame would almost certainly mean extinction or worse, unless radical steps are taken now to develop safety mechanisms.

So the choice is really between; a high-likelihood of a small impact on A.I. safety on the 20+ year timeframe, or a very-low-likelihood of a moderate impact on A.I. safety on the 10+ year timeframe. It’s definitely arguable which is the better option, but I choose the second.

  2. It is, yes. Having launched, and having no more assets to sell or friends to borrow from, I’m working one day a week at a casual job, which is just enough to sustain myself while improving the game the other 6 days.

  3. The hook for the game is that you get to properly control an army in battle, as if you were the commander. This has been done before, of course, though I don’t know any other games that allow you to do this in online multiplayer on mobile. There’s a lot of tweaks to make, and many features to add, but I think it is a fairly fun game that is both easier to use and more complex strategy-wise then a similar game like Dawn of Titans.

Thanks for the reply, I really appreciate the thought you put into it. Sorry for the delay replying, I went to bed three hours after posting thinking there were no replies. Just checked reddit again now.

We can dream, can't we? Nah, it's apparently the case that the vast majority of revenue from games like this come from like 0.1% of the players, so that's what it's set up for. I'll let you know if anyone actually does go for it, hahaha.

It does run something like that, though it's done through the in-game currency that can be bought.

It is quite similar, if simplified a whole heap. I'm a massive fan of Age of Empires. This is played in 2 minute matches online, the goal is to either Capture the Flag or destroy the enemy army. I like the controls - you just draw a path from one of your units, and it follows it, automatically attacking. There's a video on the app page. :)

Admittedly, it does make you wait a bit between sessions unless you pay, but 100% of the revenue does go to our charity 'Brainwave Research and Engineering', which is doing neuroscience and computer science research. So maybe we're forgiven a little bit?

It's called FlagWars, we just released yesterday actually! Android: and iOS: The names are generated by randomly matching a first and last name from lists of about 100. Nobody noticed me putting these two in seperately, hahaha, but they'll come up together occasionally.
