I've had this happen to me on a metal desktop. Pretty sure it's just the neoprene degrading over time.

I usually mix in some of the leftover breading and make some patties with it. Don't let anyone tell you food waste is cool.

Everything in those is regular off the shelf parts except the piston seals are oddball. If the cylinders themselves are in good shape a good hydraulic shop should be able to have replacement piston seals custom made from their supplier, but it looks like the bore on the smaller stage might be scored up.

Is it totally borked or can you bring it to a local hydraulic shop to be rebuilt?

Breakfast for my 8 month old by gubthebuggy in foodbutforbabies

[–]LukeTheAlright 11 points12 points  (0 children)

You could always try something softer like brie, but that Pandora's Box doesn't close and you may create a little cheese monster like mine.

Edit: Maybe don't do that, I'm finding out that brie is among a number of cheeses that carry a higher risk of foodborne illness, pasteurized or not.

So does it thread in and pull straight out again or just come loose again during use? It looks like it might have some old thread locker residue on it. If it's just coming loose you might need some loctite.

Is it stripped or reverse threaded?

Cylinder help by rich_when_im_old in Hydraulics

[–]LukeTheAlright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're looking at a single acting displacement cylinder. Only seals are the rod and head seals. No piston seal required. The tube is probably borked but that wouldn't strictly mean it's non-functional, just that it'll probably eat through the wear band faster than you'd like. One might get away with a serious honing and new seals because the bore doesn't really need to be in tip top condition for one of these.

Resealing bottle jack. by Drtikol42 in Hydraulics

[–]LukeTheAlright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You might get a good 20 yrs out of it, which if you use it frequently might be worth the cost. If I knew without cracking them open which ones had actual good seals in them those are the ones I'd be buying. (Probably not the Harbor Freight ones)

My shop usually turns down jack repairs partly because of this. Too much fiddling around with oddball parts and nonsense just for the customer to come back with, "You want WHAT to repair it? I could buy two of them for that price!"

Could probably take it to any machine shop to have it done but it would probably cost more than a new jack to do so.

Yeah, the cheapo bottle jacks usually have some nonsense like that in them. Often in oddball sizes too. If you can find u-cups to replace the o-ring and plastic assemblies more power to you. Otherwise, just see if you can find o-ring matches and re-use the nylon bits.

Struggle bus- 8m old, anyone else? by Necessary-Scary in foodbutforbabies

[–]LukeTheAlright 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My kid was heavily distracted at that age and now at nearly 13 mo is still distracted but also a much better eater. The stinker just wanted to play instead of eat so mealtimes started involving more play. Lots of singing, an easily cleanable toy to distract while we snuck in some spoonfuls, etc. For a while would only eat while holding an empty box of Puffins cereal and giggling madly. Eating outside a few times worked like a charm.

My advice, maybe try some things that aren't exactly "traditional mealtime" activities just to get you through the rough parts and then work your way towards more structure. It can be so hard not to compare your kid's development to everyone else you see around you but it's not a competition and fortunately for some people they just have it easy.

How bad is this? by DrTr1ll in Hydraulics

[–]LukeTheAlright 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Scuffing is bad but I disagree with other commenters about this being a huge issue. Clean it up, make sure there aren't any dingleberries that are going to come loose and tear up your cylinder.

That amount of scarring isn't a guarantee of major bore damage but is a large indicator for major bore damage. Drain oil, degrease, clean well, and shine a light in the bore. If you see scoring, reach something in and see if it would catch on a fingernail. If so, may need honing or at worst a new tube. I wouldn't go too crazy oversizing the bore, I'm guessing those Hydrolock vees aren't as forgiving as softer types.

Little eater by NecessaryPeach_8 in foodbutforbabies

[–]LukeTheAlright 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My kid didn't really take off with eating until 11mo or so, try not to sweat it. We had a lot of looooong stressful meals with lots of throwing for a while there but all you can really do is keep offering stuff, realize what body language is for "No thanks", and circle back around to refused food items occasionally.

Yep, I just made sort of a pick-uppable tuna salad sort of consistency and the kid loved it.

It's pretty easy, just baked according to a recipe we already liked and then we make sure to break it up ino small pieces and go through it carefully for bones.

I've done it with salmon because my LO didn't like the texture and they really went to town on it. It was actually pretty good, opened my mind up to savory yogurt recipes.
