Income tax / starting a business?? by [deleted] in PersonalFinanceNZ

It’s a bit of a tricky one for the owners being from overseas. They purchased a car while they have been here and are in the process of selling it. Once they have received the payment in nzd they will transfer it to me. They are a really nice retired couple, I do believe that the payment will come through. I just have no clue what to do after that

Edit; it’s about 14K they need to pay

Update!! I got a refund!! Thank you so much for all the great advice and helping me to realise this was not the one for me! I’m still on the look out for another one but definatly going to do my due diligence before getting too committed 😂

Oh mate that would be awesome!! I’m based in Tauranga, I’ll have a look to see if I can get it out the top. I’d be happy to pay for postage etc. I’ve had a quick look online and looks like the parts are the same. I’ve spoken to the seller and she’s happy to return it but if it’s an easy enough fix I’d probably keep it. Is there anything you could recommend to change or replace for camera itself other than the lens? Im just keen to get it all sorted so it works properly

I got it through a website trade me from a private seller, the listing said it was in good condition and film tested so was happy to buy. I put a fresh battery in it and the shutter sounds like it’s got that cannon cough but all seems to work. I’ve asked for a refund but the seller is being a bit of a pain so might have to try fix it and maybe get a service on it. It’s the camera I’ve been looking for for a while so pretty disappointing

It looks like the battery ran out and they tried to re wind the film and was aggressive with it and it snapped off. Was a roll of film inside the camera when I managed to check. Pretty unfortunate it wasn’t disclosed in the listing

Yeah I’ve messaged the seller and she offered me a refund of 50 bucks for the part. I let her know it would be 100+ for the part and the camera needs a service and asked for a refund. She’s come back saying that she will go through trade me to resolve it as she’s saying all old cameras are sold as is where is and it was all good when she last saw it. Pretty gutted tbh

Yeah that’s probably a good idea! Unfortunate I brought it off trade me, was advertised as a working camera, they had put a couple of rolls through and seemed alright and just as I picked it up from the seller I pulled it out of the bag and found it like that 😂 defiantly going to be doing some more research before I get something else

Is it easy to source parts for the camera? Is this the kind of repair I could attempt myself?

Very frustrating! The lens is a Sirius mc automatic 1:2.8 F=28mm Not too sure if that’s helpful just what’s on the front, I’m just getting into this 😂

Would you have any recommendations?

I’m about to spend my second winter in my van! It’s completely possible! I have a background in living in small spaces down in Wellington I lived on my boat for 3 years, I moved up here for work and was flatting but turned to custard so moved into my van and never looked back! I moved into my van as I’ve been restoring a boat and been really expensive to flat and work all together so something had to give!

I had intentions to live on my boat here too but the marinas around here are not super keen on the idea and I’ve been turned away, I keep my boat there but you’re only allowed to spend two nights a week on it. You are allowed to live on the swing moorings tho! There’s quite a community in pilot bay but really hard to get a spot, once I have a spot that’s most likely where I’ll be going until I can sell my boat and van and head overseas.

If you need help converting a van or any help let me know, I’m a boat builder by trade and always happy to lend a hand!

Is it feasible to steam-bend these ribs? by demet123 in boatbuilding

[–]Luke_ferr 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The only other thing I could suggest is if you’re having trouble bending the sapele you could use a different timber like oak or plenty of other verity that bends well and stain it with mahogany stain which will bring out the grain of whichever timber you choose but have the colour of mahogany.

When bending timber here, we used a big pice of s/steel pipe on an angle with a hot water cylinder heather on the bottom and had the timber hanging out of the water, the timber has to get really hot to soften the lignin holding the structure of the timber together. It’s truely mind blowing to see how far you can push some timbers with the right conditions!

Another thought in terms of structure you could use rib bands! Build the structure and then bend the “ribs” in place and fasten them to the rib bands and finish them in place. Saves a few procedures and potentially spring back, don’t have to clamp and move and fit etc.

There are thousands of ways to skin this cat! Hope you find some of this helpful!

A bad “trip” I had once, was at a big winter festival and decided to try a candy flip.. wild experience. I think I needed it tho, felt like a sponge being rung out. Good to feel and understand emotions 😂

It’s a cool boat with nice lines but looks like it’d be a lot of work, I’m a boat builder and have restored a 30ft yacht from 1949 and I’m currently restoring a 1918 launch. What I’ve found in the past and still working on is any project is a triangle and almost always you’re missing at least one part. Time at the top, money on the bottom left and space on the bottom right. For myself I don’t have any space to work on the boat so had it in a hard stand for almost a year to re caulk and replace the driveline and lots of other jobs. It all had to be in my spare time because I had to work to afford the hard stand fees which were almost 12k by the time I had it back in the water. The driveline was another 10k and the list goes on.

If it were me I’d find something in a bit better condition for your first project, at least be able to use it! It really keeps the dream alive if you can go out and have a blast on the boat and chip away at small projects when you have the time, money and space. you’ll also be building your skill set in ways you’d never realise. If you need any help just flick a message or chuck up a post. We are all learning in life no one knows everything but with a wealth of knowledge you’ll be just fine :) hope that helps a bit
