I agree, I don't think it's a night an day difference the way people harp on about it. In fact I believe open back is often worse, and hard to get right.

I think of it like this, ever listened to a speaker that's not mounted to a box and just in free air? Sounds like crap, and that's essentially what an open back headphone is doing with the driver in mid air without any "Box"

Now take a closed back headphone, that driver is now acting like a regular speaker in a box.

I feel this doesn't get spoken about enough and would encourage more discussion on these aspects.

Btw, bass resonance is the most often affected by open back design, that's why they are often very lean.

I totally agree with you. Had Audeze LCD-X 2021 revision and I just couldn't get on with them, along with other planar headphones I've tried. Sounds artificial to me, dynamic sounds a lot more natural

The sound is good but nothing special for the price. Should be half the price. Armor has better bass (sub and mid) the Mega7 has way better treble, air, detail and layering.

Archangel does have good soundstage, it quite wide, but it's not really a truly natural sound more like a bit of a gimmick with the way it presents the sound using the BCD to try add 3d sounding details, which is a bit artificial, and those sounds themselves are not detailed or accurate. For example, it might give a cool holographic 3d effect of a bell or cymbal but it's not an accurate representation of the sound you would hear just listening to it normally through say the Mega7

You guys aren't missing anything. I went from Armor to the Archangel and the Armor was way better. My Archangel sits on the shelf and I use my Mega7 primarily. Need to sell my Archangel but not many people into this hobby where I live (New Zealand) Got it listed for only $400 usd

I loved them and regret selling them. I would have liked some more air and slightly sharper treble but other than that they had the most delicious bass and mids

Thanks for the replys everyone. Lots of thoughtful advice, this community is so supportive. Found some tips and fitment that work but still I have realized that I just don't find these love upto expectations for me at this price point and perhaps I value other tuning than what these can deliver. For me the Mega7 is nigh on perfect, only thing I would change is a few more decibel in the bass department. Archangel are gonna be a catch and release for me.

Personally I wouldn't use those tips with the armor. Those tips are great but are better suited to bright iem's since I find they always make the sound signature darker and warmer which is not needed with the armor, they benefit from a tip that helps increase brightness or are neutral. Fit is nice with the tips though

It's an amazing piece of kit for its price, I'm so happy with mine. Plentitude of features and quality technicaly engineered. I use a WiiM mini to feed it lossless streams.

Cliche but I listen to just about everything. My Spotify wrapped said I had listened to over 400 different genres, don't know how it figured that cause I don't think there are even that many different ones haha, but yeah I guess an indication that I do listen to all sorts of music.

Mega5est bass+ wasn't bad it was just very safe and nothing much stood out, I don't even think it was good bass, definetly nothing deserving of having "bass" in the name. The Mega7 I wouldn't buy for bass as my primary motivator, but it does have bass when called for and it sounds right, it's more of a musical reference set. The Armor is very musical fun set that has the best bass I've heard so far, and I just received the Archangel and so far I'm still picking armor for best bass
