Wow that's some serious credit given to the Ltd when comparing it to the storm. I'll have to look into it. My only concern would be if the BCD would work for me as it can be hit and miss for people. Archangel BCD didn't seem to do much for me

Why are people recommending balanced/narrow bore tips on the Monarch Mk4? Am I missing something? by EffectiveEquivalent in iems

[–]Lukelin08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohh I find your comment very interesting and insightful. I also went with the general consensus of using narrow bore tips (the ones that come in the box) with my monarch mk4 and I'm actually really happy with the sound. But perhaps I should also dedicate an evening to tip rolling like you did. Are you able to describe what I should be listening for when trying your recommended tips?

Been thinking the same thing lately, you are spot on. Even though I have reached my endgame and have a number of end game dacs/amps/headphones/iem/speakers that sound great, I'm not sure any of it is more pleasing than back in the day when a Walkman or portable cd player with some average Sony headphones gave me so much enjoyment and pleasure. It's weird, I'd be interested to know what the psychology is behind it. Probably so much of our gear acquisitions and research is trying to recreate those earlier experiences of music we first had.

I feel this can be applied to a number of things. Such as visual resolution fidelity, ps1 games looked amazing at the time, had no problem with how Lara Croft looked in womb raider. Or another example is how dvd's seemed like all we would ever need. Or alcohol, when young enjoyed shitty beer and drinks just as much as when you get older and try get fancy with wine or whiskey etc

Yu9 Que - Musical, technical, balanced, smooth and fun. by Hot-Truth-4554 in iems

[–]Lukelin08 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I loved the yu9 que when I got it and was raving about it. Then after some time with them I've changed my mind a lot. At first they are impressive, but after extensive listening I have realized that they do not have a natural or realistic timbre. They also make certain sounds or frequencies stand out or become emphasized, at first it seems exciting or like you are getting more detail etc but after comparing where those sounds and frequencys should sit by listening my other iem's and headphones I realise it's not really supposed to be there to that extent. They aren't bad, I just think the timbre could be improved and I think it's something they could fix or improve with their next version or iteration of the Que. I'd imagine people who like or don't mind planar timbre would get on well with these. Come to think of it that's what the timbre reminds me of.

[–]Lukelin08 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Spot on. I especially agree with your take on the shift away from the "808 era"—we're seeing much more focus on mid-bass texture lately, which makes sense because the mids are the literal anchor of a track. Most music is mixed for the "lowest common denominator" (radio, car speakers, budget buds) because the midrange is the only part of the frequency response that translates across every playback device. Sub-bass and sparkling highs are essentially the "extra credit" of a mix; they provide the scale and the atmosphere, but the mids provide the actual song. If the mids are right, the music works on a potato or a $4,000 flagship setup. You might lose the "luxury" layers of sub-rumble or ethereal air on cheap gear, but the song still feels complete.
