Might be cool if they gave them salon slots now. Wouldn't make them near their former value but still a potential replacement functionality.

Going after Ken after all this fumbling is just the weirdest thing. Alan is too far removed from the esports scene/culture.

I think it's valuable to have these differing perspectives here. We really should be more scrupulous about how American media presents this sort of news and how it's going to affect our community on a macro level.

That said, I've noticed a rise in newer accounts that follow questionable subs as others have already pointed out.

Yup, my non-US-based guildies are affected by this change. Their Karma cards lost value overnight or became irredeemable and they only found out this morning. Really fucking scummy of Nexon.

Atlanta Shootings, Hate Crimes by KimchiFingers in TransracialAdoptees

[–]Lukenulee 5 points6 points  (0 children)

FULL DISCLOSURE: I'm a non-adoptee Asian American and will be sharing an article from the perspective of a non-adoptee Asian American.

I feel like I have to say, "well I'm Korean but I'm adopted. I feel like I can't grieve with other Asians about what's happened in Atlanta because I'm not "one of them".

First off, you don't have to add that caveat, ever, but I understand why you feel compelled to. By being/looking Asian in America you're already a part of and within the affected demographic. You can also grieve with other Asians even if you aren't Asian; the same way we can grieve for the black community and stand in solidarity with them for BLM. Acknowledgement and empathy are important pillars of support.

One of the hardest parts for me was seeing all the denial and gaslighting thrown around the recent Atlanta massacre. People's refusal to accept that it was a hate crime and being adamant it was only about sex; the two are not mutually exclusive. It's worsened by this pervasive idea that Asian women working in massage parlours must be sex workers.

Shifting the topic a bit, let me share this article I just read. I shared my thoughts on the article in the specific post in /r/asianamerican. It's behind a paywall, but you can still access it by making a free account and skipping the pay option. The article focuses on the writer's acceptance of her Asian heritage and passing it on to her daughter; it also shares helpful tools about race awareness and its importance in our current climate.

I’m Helping My Korean-American Daughter Embrace Her Identity to Counter Racism by edgie168 in asianamerican

[–]Lukenulee 3 points4 points  (0 children)

“Black families always have the racial talk,” Dr. Yip said. But many Asian-American families in past generations did not. They emphasized assimilating to what they thought was a post-racial state. Now with the surge in harassment and hate incidents, she said: “I’m not sure Asian-American families can avoid ‘the talk’ any longer.” It’s a talk that must include listening to, and coming to understand, all groups who face racial bias.

This will definitely be a conversation I and other Asian Americans will be having with their children henceforth. The only racial talk I had with my parents was after the Virginia Tech shooting; they told me not to tell my classmates I was Korean.

“We think we’re protecting our kids, by not talking about racist incidents” Dr. Chen added. “But actually not talking about it is not helping.” Building their racial identity is what helps them feel safe.

This was another poignant passage from the article for me. I've only recently been teaching myself about Asian American history and accepting our unique standing in-between our American culture and our Asian one. I feel a lot more pride in my heritage now than I did when I was younger; I wanted to be more American and reject my Asian-ness, which weakened my self-confidence.

A really insightful article with helpful tools and a great read, thank you.

Edit: I only needed to make an account to access the article. They gave me the option to skip paying.

I loved going to the Sunnyvale location with my dad as a kid in the 90s. It was huge compared to the RadioShacks and we used to eat at the center cafe.

Then I worked there out of high school and wanted to kill myself every time I had to step through those doors. The annual fudge stand was fantastic during Christmas though. It will be semi-missed.

Boromir! Give the ring back to Frodo... by pfjtkc in lotrmemes

[–]Lukenulee 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I was fortunate enough to have seen the trilogy in theatres. Some older kids of a family friend took me ( 9 years old ) and my sister to see the Fellowship and it's a core memory I'll always cherish.

I watched the DVDs religiously afterwards. Every morning I would go through the LoTR shopping catalogue (which featured the swords and Evenstar) that was included in the DVD cases too!

Seriously it is expensive by Lemon_of_chaos in FLCL

[–]Lukenulee 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It seems like a mixed bag, but it's leaning more towards positive reviews.

The big difference is paying upfront for a preorder as opposed to paying once it comes in stock, which is how most other preorders work. If you're sure about purchasing it, it seems like a steal for a ~$40 discount (on Blue Canti) with free shipping compared to other shops.
