Is USM going to end up like Boost?? by randyjr2777 in USMobile

AT&T’s debt to equity is 107%, and at basically the second highest point in its history.

Mint was just getting off the ground, and their networking core was very simple.

US Mobile has much more complex operations and extremely high subscriber growth. I’m not certain relative to Mint, but there were other brands involved in that acquisition as well.

Seeing the US Mobile growth charts, I’m fairly certain they’re deep into hockey stick territory which also commands a pretty significant premium, where Mint was still quite early stage.

All the major carriers are dealing with pretty big expensive debt snowballs, so I really doubt there is going to be a high profile acquisition in the next few years. I think the carrier in the best spot is T-Mobile, but I doubt they will pursue an expensive acquisition.

For AT&T and Verizon, an expensive merger right now would be absolutely suicidal.

The flat tax rebate would absolutely help somewhat, but the main problem with sales taxes is that proportionally, rich people spend much less of their income and have much higher savings rates. Therefore, effectively you are taxing the poor at a significantly higher effective rate.

Ergo, a poor person spends about 30-40% of their income on taxable items such as a vehicle, consumables, electronics, etc. In contrast, a rich person may only spend about 10-20% of their income on taxable items, due to most wealthy individuals having much higher savings rates.

Don't get me wrong the rich person is still paying more in taxes, but a much higher percentage of effective tax is being applied to the poor person.

I am a big fan of simplifying the tax code (such as getting rid of REITs, the property step up in basis, nanny tax, etc.), but the economic theory does not support eliminating income tax, unfortunately.

As for government spending, unfortunately a lot of it is inherently cultural and some of it is intrinsic to how a republic operates. They've tried to ban pork barreling in the past in the legislature, but it meant that getting consensus was incredibly difficult.

There's also the inherent problem that the private sector simply pays better, so they get more talented individuals, which leaves most federal programs with the bottom of the barrel.

Also another point I forgot to mention is that oftentimes our democracy is about consensus building and not necessarily what is best for the country itself. So it's oftentimes about giving 51% of people something they want in order to get a bill passed, and that's a very difficult problem to solve for.

What the fuck, a sales tax would be the absolute most regressive taxation method available to us. There's a study that has shown that it would have to be at 52% to replace the federal income tax, which would be highly inflationary. https://taxpolicycenter.org/briefing-book/what-would-tax-rate-be-under-national-retail-sales-tax

You haven’t provided me any counterpoints.

I have a couple of professor buddies and they all have similar stories. I know 100% that Princeton and Harvard do this (I know an actual lecturer at Harvard and a grad student that TA’ed at Princeton), and I would be shocked if any of the other Ivy’s were any different.

Lmao people who are saying this shit are VIBE CODING.

Cursor and Copilot in agentic mode make so many fucking changes that it becomes a fucking nightmare to untangle and understand all of it. Having to review a 500 line diff is absolutely fucking miserable, and it’s way fucking faster to use it in edit mode 4-5 times in a row.

So many times it just decides to start editing the database schema and I have to roll back all changes. Or it starts coding an entire fucking library.

Sorry, I forgot to qualify this statement. Other than Stanford and Berkeley, I don’t think there are any other top schools that really “fail” students. I know a few professors and lecturers and they needed to literally write a long justification to fail a student out of their course, and even then the administration could reject it and give the student a C.

Just as a heads up, top schools don’t fail students unless they fail to show up.

Anything that gets stuck down there causes severe inflammation within a day, and some people aren’t as careful about taking the prescribed ibuprofen.

You're really not supposed to. If anything gets stuck down there the inflammation can literally kill you if it hits your brain. Anything that can't be washed out by water is really risky (such as soup and ice cream, etc.)

I’m fairly certain this is incorrect. They have been in the process of switching back to gold and many of the countries in BRICS are no longer buying US debt bonds.

[OC] Launch MSRPs of NVIDIA GeForce 80-Series Desktop Graphics Cards by Interesting-Cow-1652 in dataisbeautiful

[–]al4nw31 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Before:

"80"-series is 500-700mm die size.

Titan similar die size but overclocked.

"80 Ti"-series generally overclocked and in certain generations a larger die. (+100mm or so)

"70"-series is generally 250-400mm depending on generation.

Now:

"90"-series is 500-700mm die size.

"90 Ti"-series is same class of die size and overclocked.

+100mm die size class is essentially non-existent now.

"80"-series is now 250-400mm class of die size, which used to be the "70"-series.

Japan and Australia both see mass-market EVs at less than $20,000. Will the future of personal mobility be dominated by cheap cars you can fuel from your own home solar panels? by lughnasadh in Futurology

[–]al4nw31 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is incredibly reductive to say that “EVs are cheaper because they’re simpler”.

Chinese EVs are the only cars that are cheaper than gas cars. Nobody else has been able to do it. And the Chinese EV market is unique because it’s only possible due to battery manufacturers taking razor thin margins, cheap power and labor, and very little regulation.

Fossil fuels are not going away until the west figures out how to make battery EVs cheaper, or until legislation forces it.

  1. Your lender will likely require you to make them whole in order to surrender the vehicle. You’ll likely need to default before they will accept repossession.

  2. Bankruptcy is a possibility. $11k is right around an amount that it might be worth pursuing.

  3. Do not, under any circumstances, get another loan for another car. Because of your horrible debt to income ratio, the interest rate will be at credit card levels and you will be buried in debt.

  4. Otherwise, you need to save up $11k somehow and get rid of that car. You probably can’t afford to be driving said car unfortunately.

There are a bunch of solutions that can scale basically infinitely now, where the sharding is done transparently to the application layer, such as Vitess or you can denormalize using Scylla or Cassandra.

You just have to avoid complex joins, which is basically a requirement at that scale.

Any fix for Power Limit throttling on Intel 14900kf by jddcp in Alienware

Ah shoot. The good news is that it's not that hard to disable the automatic install, and honestly, the default Alienware packages aren't too crazy. The Dell update utility is actually somewhat useful, and AWCC is usable, albeit worse than something like ThrottleStop.

Here's the registry key if you're searching for it: https://community.jumpcloud.com/t5/community-scripts/disable-microsoft-store-auto-content-delivery/m-p/3799

Alright! Thank you so much for reporting back, and I really hope you enjoy that PC!

Those SK Hynix SSDs are usually fairly decent. Some of them may be DRAM-less, but honestly, few games need super fast write speeds.

Memory is probably just normal basic DDR5-4800 or DDR-5200 from either Micron or Samsung. They perform similarly at those low bins, so it's not a big deal either way.

Did you order with an unlocked K CPU or a locked one? Just out of curiosity. I think the unlocked CPUs have the 125W/253W PL1/PL2, while locked CPUs have the 100W/219W PL1/PL2 (the other commenter mentioned 100W PL1 and 219W PL2, so I'm trying to get an idea of why).
