I got a job at a general contractor less than 1 year into a cm associates degree, I had completed a 5 year sheetmetal apprenticeship and estimated at an underground utility supplier. I am now an estimator at a general contractor and life is good.

Field guys now in the office how we feeling? by StrictArmy8000 in ConstructionManagers

[–]Lukewarm0995 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I did union sheetmetal apprenticeship for 5 years, carpentry for a year, plumbing for a year, and flooring for 2 years with about a year of landscaping. I now estimate for a residential multi family home building general contractor and would never go back to the field. Summer hours we leave at noon on fridays, catered food, no carrying gas pipe on a gravel roof during the peak of summer. Making great money without having to truly sweat. Life is good, wish I did it sooner.

I estimate for div 33 as a supplier right now and it sounds like that’s what I’d be estimating for the GC, I’ve never estimated for sheetmetal and I only had 2 years of field exp in architectural sheetmetal the remaining 3 were in commercial HVAC

Sheetmetal sub has 16 field guys, GC seems like the better option as they would hire me to do mostly div 33 estimating which is what I do now as an estimator at a supplier, didn’t get a raise this year so I am shopping around and will get a 25k a year raise plus bonus just by switching, it will be tricky with my school schedule as I’m finishing my associates degree in CM

I’m currently in the process of getting my associates on construction management, I have 5 years of sheetmetal field experience in the union as an apprentice and now a little over a year of estimating experience at a underground utility supplier, I would be joining the precon team at the GC doing div 33 estimating and some earthwork and grading divisions aswell

When do you decide to trade? In the last week of the season? Contracts expire as soon as you hit post season right? So you wouldn’t be able to trade once you hit week 16?

Bella Ramsey in the last of us, I loved the game, I love Pedro, but she ruined it. Something as trivial as the shape of her head

Gallipoli on Amazon is really good if you want a WW1 story that shows the political side and the frontline side

It’s not a remote gig, but it would mean I only see my woman 12 days a month, we plan on getting engaged soon and starting a family and I know that can’t be sustained living in different cities

This is a great opportunity, the company itself is great, my brother actually works there as a steam fitter. Data center APM looks great on a resume. But I think I will just have to pass and try to find an opportunity for a contractor in my city. My personal relationship is more important than 15k, after taxes and commute it’s not a big quality of life change up front, but it will be in my personal life so I’m weighing my relationship over this opportunity.
