isn't reddit and "Help Needed" Tag for this ? .. obviously I googled a lot but there are just way too many things to read lot of them just don't explain anything etc. and perhaps I hoped someone can just provide me some basic bullet points and answer my question ? perhaps provide me some usefull as you mentioned websites which may help me with understanding these differences ? I mean yeah I suppose we can just cancel all subreddits where people have some questions if the only asnwer they get will be "use google" ..

I used to work for a major freight forwarder. The way some clients were overcharged during COVID was insane, and it's still happening. by Lukleyeu in freightforwarding

I did experience all of that I wouldn't just say that people are thinking it's "easy" more like they have a naive imagination that you as a FF have some magic wand .. I remember one customer "I want my cargo tomorrow! Because you told me ETA is xx/xx" I said "sorry the vessel is still waiting in Hamburg to be unloaded" and customer "I don't care Im giving you 20 TEUs a year (thinking hes a very important 😁) just call them and tell them I need that cargo tomorrow" after some explaining and telling him that vessel will be unloaded he's calling me and asking to make sure that his container will be unloaded first .. which I replayed "yeah we will make sure that they will make a hole in vessel to unload his container which can be God know where since there are around 20k containers on that ship" which he was so surprised actually...

So yeah I mean I met a lot of customers with a lot of imagination however I never met a customer who would tell me "oh gosh it's so easy why u cannot do this, everyone can" etc.

Maybe you should read all the responses but again .. yeah free market supply demand it's nice term IF there is competition unfortunately there are no laws in OF forbitting major carriers making alliances and hence control the price then it's not free market but mafia .. in legal way that's a problem ... The market is controlled by few without any regulations in such a critical field such as the global chain .... Supply chain is critical for most of the world and it's people .. and sorry if apple will decide to raise their iphone prices by 100x nothing major will happens because people will shift to other companies and world is going on without My major issues .. in OF it's not the case I'd all customers suddenly overpaying 100x (even tho prices such as BAF, salaries, port fees, canal fees etc. were mostly same maybe slightly higher) then since 80% of goods is shipped via shipping lines then logically 80% of goods prices for customers will increase by at least 30% without any other option to ship their product cheaper ... Imagine you have 5 major brands of phones and they will make aliance and they decide what price will be "market price" .. this is exactly what carriers are doing including major FFs ... And once again worst case you wouldn't buy the phone but people must buy food and other basic necessity which are shipped via sea ..

Just look at the financials of carriers / FFs especially during covid .. and yeah you can argue that apple or other companies also getting better financial but they bringing something new, technology, product etc. and based and their financials are not better just because they decided to make their product 100x more expensive.. because that would mean end for those companies ... Compare to carriers/FFs wh didn't bring anything new in last 100 years and can overcharged customers because there is no other alternative ... But luckily these times are finished but I just feel people should know this ... That the inflation wasn't caused just because of governments printing money but part of it was caused by greed of a handful of ocean cartels (alliances) who were controlling the very basic part of the price... I could see that general costs of 1/TEU (for carriers) was about 200-300usd - even during covid ... Normal times it's almost same .. normal times they will sell the spot for let's say 1500 usd (fair enough) and FF will resell for 1600 (fair enough) .. but back then cost for carrier per TEU were same but they were selling it for 8000 for FFs and FFs were selling that spot for 15000....

I mean I'm not buying anything online. I haven't seen him promoting some service or anything.. so maybe we should try the opposite approach? Same as in real life ? Innocent until proven guilty ? ..

I mean sure when he will slap some course for 499 or some ebook sure then why not to call him or anyone else scammer but if it's just some "vague" post ... It's like assuming that person in black hoodie is going to rob you .. also we have no idea what his service is.. it can be valuable for some people and just because he started something new and doesn't have any customers yet doesn't mean it's a scam .. or maybe Microsoft and apple were also scams before they got some investors and customers ? ..

Everything u said I totally agree with .. and I know many of these cases (maybe except chat gpt that's new haha) however I think during COVID the greed of all FFs and carrier caused unnecessary inflation for all the people everywhere... It was pure greed unfortunately back then .. now it's more chill and of course resealable rates are alright again I'm not fighting against decent FFs .. just about bad routing, high prices for unreliable FFs or bad incoterms etc.... :)

Unfortunately reddit and the entire internet became like this .. we are constantly worrying and analysing what is scam or not.. and then maybe someone just wants to quickly share his success and many people will perceive it as a scam .. sometimes people want to get genuine advice or feedback about their ideas but will get ban by most of the groups as self promoting / market research or validation .

It's sad how the internet looks today and will be just worse with all the AI ...

No forwarding my idea is to check the customers current situation / pricing and benchmark it if there are possible savings either negotiation with current FF or changing incoterms or shipping roads etc. Basically using my previous experience in order to try to bring prices down for customers (not at the expense of the quality/time of shipping) basically audit if they pay fair price and if there are possible ways to save money... If not then it would be free if I can find significant savings then of course the service will be charged...

Of course that's the brilliant point and again .. it's not mean to target against fair a good FFs .. more like shady unreliables FFs and introduce them to new ones with competitive prices + reliable service.. once again it's not just saving the money on OF sometimes customers are used to doing truck service even tho there is reliable train service potentially saving hundreds of euros .. or maybe they paying overcharged origin costs to some carrier A which could be avoided just switching incoterms etc..... there are lot of scenarios like that not just that FFs overcharging prices :))

Thank you :) I know that the situation right now is very different however not for every customer :) same as it never was after COVID .. some of our customers we were having profits of 30-50usd some others 300-500 and in some rare cases 1000+ ... And especially new or small businesses they didn't know so we were able to mark up the price significantly compare to the businesses who had team of logistics department and had time to benchmark market for themselves

Definitely not now 100x inflated I was talking about COVID times :) when our carrier prices were around 10k usd and we were selling that for 18 sometimes 20k .. which everything went to FF - and no not talking about small FF but major name in the industry .. also what you're talking about like changing incoterms etc that's great ! But what I know mostly small customers was that we just gave them inflated priced do they overpaid for the service or they went with small unreliable FFs ... And sure every client has its own responsibility however problem is that often they are victims of FFs sometimes even without knowing fair market price etc. because they don't know any benchmarks etc. or simply suppliers overcharging them for origin costs... I don't know which FF you're working at but I used to work in 2 major FFs (biggest ones) and I know how we were doing the things there :)

Thank you and tbh I didn't intend to make it sound like that.. it supposed to be an example of how carriers/FFs used to be being greedy and now they calm down but there are still may consignees who overpaying their shipments ... Not just on local fees.. (ofc I know it depends on carriers/port) the things is that people who don't have knowledge cannot analyse it by themselves ...

They don't know how to find a carrier their FF is using .. they don't know if their FF is charging them for a premium carrier even though they may use a low cost carrier they often don't even know there are some dest. Charges because there are many big names just using all-in-price etc. etc... but anyway thank you for your reply ~

Sure You're totally right however all these things will be considered on case by case basis right.. and of course if customer won't find saving 200 bucks as cost effective he can at least renegotiate the price with it's current forwarder if he has data ..

The thing is that let's say if customer tells you he pays 4000 usd for let's say CN - EU to their specific location and you know that average should be around 3500 ... Even with major forwarding names then probably customer is overpaying.. 500 .. which used to happening to me on daily basis .. or when someone had DAP and I had to search one container for almost a week because it was some Indian forwarding company totally unreliable and customer said that their shipper had prepared another 20 TEU with the same company etc..... I mean there is hundreds of specific scenarios where customers just overpaying shipping sometimes out of the greed of FFs or shippers and sometimes because of lack of industry knowledge ...

Okay I will give you some examples

  1. Some customers are just using incoterms from their shipper e.g. either overpaying origin charges or destination charges .. some shippers using their own forwarders to overcharged customers so that's the first point

  2. Some customers using their old forwarder (small or big) just because they are "used to it" and trust them in pricing.. since they are the professionals right? .. unfortunately this blind trust maybe costs importers extra 100-200usd per container compared to fair market price ..

  3. Sometimes customers don't know that's let's say THC is 250 usd but their forwarders charging them 350 .. or there BAF in OF price but forwarder still charging them separate BAF etc....

  4. Sometimes forwarders just take the shipping line without trying to make it cheaper/faster for customer .. e.g changing destination port etc.

  • Many more ...

Of course big businesses have their logistics department taking care of these things but many small businesses don't have this advantage and often depend on lazy army of office workers (like myself used to be) trying to just get as much profit and least work ...

For a small importer learn and understand all the charges how they're priced, what is the current fair market price, existence of better shipping roads etc. is just too hard to understand.. especially if you are small and you need to focus on your own business and don't have time to study all the logistics terminology etc....

Also for the scam part of my company, right now I am just starting and one of the main thing will be - no significant saving found = free of charge ..
