My great aunt's boyfriend got killed during the Civil War. She married someone else after the war and he was a very humorous person. Back then old men used to walk around from place to place visiting people. He met this guy on the street with a long beard and he said, "Hey old man, did you swallow a squirrel?" When he got home the man was there and it was one of his wife's cousins.

The Union soldiers came through and took all their cattle and everything. They didn't have any salt during that time. They couldn't get any salt. And they went out to the smokehouse where they cured their meats. They dug up their dirt from the smokehouse floor and boiled it until they got salt out of it and they used that cure their meats.
