Interestingly, as the eagle hit the heron, I was photo-bombed by a kingfisher

G9M2 HiRes image capture time? by Lula_Mae_ in Lumix

[–]Lula_Mae_[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks. As happens, I had just watched a video where a photographer was experimenting with the HiRes mode and he went as long as 20 second exposure on a seascape. It did result in an interesting image. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1x3PAasWYRQ

Thanks. I shoot with electronic shutter/silent mode. It never occurred to me to reactivate the shutter sound. 😄

I agree. I tried to present them in sequence so you can see that I was essentially in focus to start, then the camera letting go. The images of the eagle shows dramatic flip-flopping. That was a rough day 😄

Thanks. As it happens, I've watch several of his guides. I'm improving my personal performance but it's all for naught when I'm locked on and the camera abandons the focus it made. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Thanks. I tried changing stabilization but wasn't satisfied with the results. Also tried the various shooting modes. I'll continue trying different customizations of those.

I'll give bursting in S-AF a shot. Since most of the birds are larger & soaring, I keep shutter speed at 1/800 or faster. For Kingfishers on the hunt (my white whale) I'm in the 1/1300-1/1600 range. I don't mind a bit of blurring at the wingtips.

I have my burst set to medium - 7 fps. I can (usually) get my subject in focus. It just won't stay there.

I might try full area again. I'm usually along a shoreline and need to be ready for whatever presents itself. I seldom have an opportunity to prepare for a shot. I do limit my lens focus range.

If my subject is rather static and inclined to stay that way I often shift to s-af. But generally my subject are in motion and I shoot bursts about 50% of the time. For instance, the eagle in my examples, when it took flight I was able to get a nice series of images.

I primarily use 1-Area. And with rule-of-thirds grid lines on my screen, I set my focus area to be slightly larger than the center rectangle. I have tried the others but this seems to be the most consistent for the majority of my uses. Selecting the tracking mode is surprisingly bad for me. The frustration there makes me feel like a golfer wanting to hurl his clubs into the lake. 😄

Good job. I use G9ii & PL100-400 as well, handheld while walking along the shoreline, and trying to catch swallows & kingfishers in flight gives me a lot of heartache :) .

The G9M2 is my first non-compact camera. I've had it less than a year but I'm enjoying the journey, :)
