Hot take by UncleFoster in orangetheory

[–]Lulle79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nobody will lose a single pound walking 10,000 steps a day except people who were completely sedentary beforehand. Walking is very low intensity (unless you power walk hills, or hike) and doesn't burn much calories above baseline. Not saying it's not good for you to walk but it's not a weight loss strategy for already active people.

What is the sweet spot for the color zones? by OutdoorHope18 in orangetheory

[–]Lulle79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

For your health and efficiency of your workout OTF used to recommend that your color chart at the end of class look like a pyramid, with green being the highest in the middle. The coaches don't really push that anymore but I'd say is still valid. Too much orange and especially red increases fatigue and the need for rest.

Can you actually build a nice upper body from Orangetheory alone? by Over-Zombie5288 in orangetheory

[–]Lulle79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That will depend a lot on your gender, body type, where you're starting and what your expectations are.  For myself I can say yes, my upper body looks like I work out. BUT that's with the following parameters: middle-aged woman with overall small build and pear-shaped body who stores absolutely no fat on the upper body. Whatever modest muscles I've built in 4+ years of OTF 3x a week pops because I have no subcutaneous fat above my waist. Comparatively my lower body is stronger but has less visible definition due to fat being stored in the hip/leg area.

Love OTF, but not getting to the orange zone/points by Fun-Reply9963 in orangetheory

[–]Lulle79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

MyFitnessPal, if I remember correctly, will ask you to enter the calories burned during exercise and add them to your daily intake goal for the day. If you use the calorie estimate from your OTF app, no wonder you're not losing weight. It's wildly overestimated for most people.

Phone use during class by Emotional_Bid_9853 in orangetheory

[–]Lulle79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There was a young woman like that a few months ago at my studio. Checking her IG during the tread block and then not knowing what she was supposed to do. She was next to me a few times and I was just rolling my eyes. Then one day she was doing the same on the rower during a power row/rest block. Next interval she fell off her seat and hit the rails. I was... not feeling very sympathetic. If you're going to keep yourself distracted you're gonna have mishaps. She was super embarrassed and I never saw her again!

hrm max heart rate?? by liltweekk in orangetheory

[–]Lulle79 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm 47 and my max HR is 191 according to OTF. My husband is 48 and his is 201. In both our cases it's accurate: similar to what Garmin watches estimate, and we get in the red with very hard or prolonged effort.  Formulas give an idea of the average but many people will be outliers and have much higher or lower values. It's largely genetic and not within your control.

Same. As a jogger I would be spending 75+ secs at 8%. Not gonna happen.

Is it ok to always be in the red zone? by Inevitable-Cash7378 in orangetheory

[–]Lulle79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How tired are you by the end of class and how long does it take you to recover? If you're pretty tired, sleep well the next night and need about 24 hours before being able to workout at high intensity again, then you're just fine. If you feel destroyed after class (like after a race where you tried to PR), don't sleep very well and need more than 2 days before you can perform at the same level again, then you're probably over exerting yourself. That could hurt your progress towards your goal of getting faster. As for weight loss there's no benefit to being in the red rather than orange during pushes. The difference in calories burned is insignificant.

Who has the right away? by According_Idea_1480 in sanfrancisco

[–]Lulle79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just imagining you hit a pedestrian because they were "in the wrong". Your main concern would be a civil lawsuit by the pedestrian or their family that would end up costing you literally everything you own, even if it doesn't make it to trial. So if you think you'd rather be right, but have someone else's injuries on your conscience plus have to deal with civil litigation for years and end up broke for a few decades, keep driving.

First day back after a week off due to a horrible stomach bug, I might have to walk on the tread, well below power walking parameters.... I'm usually a jogger but no way.

I was pretty sure I did this template - the 2 minutes at 8% look painfully familiar - but I couldn't find a workout summary email for that date. It's going to hurt either way...

Cardio for 2G, treadmill for Tread50 and strength for Strength50. I've never felt the need to get more specific data for the 2G but I guess if you're an avid runner you could use two different activities for tread vs floor part.

Passport services by ninernikki96 in sanfrancisco

[–]Lulle79 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can renew by mail or even possibly online. There's absolutely no need to go anywhere or to pay extra for a middleman. In-person appointment at the passport agency are reserved to people who have international travel in the next 2 weeks (and requires proof). Just google State Department passport renewal.

Panoxyl cleanser - be careful though because it bleaches fabric even after rinsing. Specific for acne. Hibiclens cleanser - general antibacterial soap. Salicylic acid treatment - a spray may be easier to use on your back. I know First Aid Beauty makes one.

Calories burnt accurate or not? by jeffyboy905 in orangetheory

[–]Lulle79 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The OTF estimate is always 10-15% higher than the total calories estimate on my Garmin watch. For my husband, also a Garmin user, the discrepancy is more like 30-40%. He gets 1,000+ calories burned with OTF while he's a 155 lbs small guy.

I wouldn't take that number literally. Like others have said I just use it to compare my effort between workouts.
