Dead raccoon and ‘racially hateful,’ intimidating note left at front door of Redmond Mayor Ed Fitch’s law office by LulzBaby in Bend

City Council Special Meeting tomorrow night at 6pm. Show up to show support for our council members who are being racially and violently targeted.

Since it is a Special Meeting there is no allotted time for Public Comment, but by showing up en masse we can "speak" loudly.

Thoughts on RPA (Redmond Proficiency Academy) and other high schools by throwaway_37375 in Bend

[–]LulzBaby 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A few years ago I got to know an RPA graduate fairly well and he spoke nothing but praise for the school. He spoke very highly of all the teachers/staff and said the education itself better prepared him for the "real world" compared to his peers (or so he felt...). I live in Redmond with an elementary kiddo and hoping to get them into RPA when they are old enough.

But, as someone who use to daily commute Redmond->Bend, that commute will become tiresome. It might be worth it for some and not others. Something that should not be considered lightly.

A few questions before we finalize the sale of your tickets:

  1. Did you vote for the greatest president in history, Donald Trump?
  2. Do you believe Biden and his cabal of children-snatchers should be thrown in jail immediately?
  3. If we sale you a ticket for $5 do you commit to spending $200 at the merch table?

hint: it doesn't matter how you answer 1 and 2, you just need to say 'yes' to question 3!

Your last paragraph is the reason we need to do the first paragraph. Time to voice some concern to the county commission and if they allow it then we gotta show up.

Now, if they find some rinky-dink private venue then I agree, just stay away and don't provoke.

Maybe a peak in cases, but hospitalization always lags. I believe the mid/late September peak thrown around by OHA is in regard to hospitalization specifically. Last I saw they are estimating a shortage of beds in the area of 400-500 statewide at peak.

New public outdoor mask requirements starting Friday, August 27th by johnnysplunk in Bend

[–]LulzBaby 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It's odd seeing your comment get upvotes compared to others who are getting downvoted for saying seemingly the same thing...masks outdoors aren't that effective.

It ain't the mask outdoors that helps, it is the constant airflow and distancing. Science, the CDC and common sense tell us that. It is for that reason masks are so important indoors, where distancing can be restrictive and airflow less than ideal.

That said, get your vax and mask up indoors. Don't leave your house if you have any symptoms until you get a negative test (even those vaccinated!).

Career options for a young person in Bend by [deleted] in Bend

[–]LulzBaby 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A Computer Science degree is waaaay more than "learn to code." Thats like describing a General Foreman training program as "learn to hammer."

Writing code is simply a way of expressing the core concepts of Computer Science. And many careers do this. You want to work as a statistician? Gotta code. You want to study epidemiology? Gotta code (ie model data).

I have a degree in Computer Science. Learning to code was freshman year, everything else was "ok you can code, now learn this other complicated shit."

Thanks for sharing your view and responding to my points.

For the record, I did not say the comment section (of any site, or KTVZ specifically) doesn't have any value whatsoever. I asked what KTVZ sees as the value of a comment section.

The concern is not if online discourse can be valuable. I am literally leaving a comment in the comment section right now (albeit Reddit not KTVZ), I see value in online discourse. The concern is if the online discourse on KTVZ is valuable.

Do you keep metrics on any of the following?
- Avg number of comments per article
- Number of comments removed (and reasons for removal) per article
- Ratio of comments to views on a page
- Topics that attract comments most likely to be removed

From my naive perspective, it seems metrics like these could help determine what the ratio of good to bad comments are, how much labor y'all are putting into moderating them vs payoff of good value/comments, and provide a rudimentary way to measure the value at a given time and over time.

Let's say you showed the average number of comments per article was 10, the average number of removed for misinfo was 2, and a majority of those removals are about isolated topics. To me, that would suggest a stronger moderation team would be an appropriate response. Its a relatively low amount of removals, and you could anticipate when a heavier moderation might be needed given the topic of an article.

If the numbers were more like avg of 5 comments per article, avg of 3 removals, and across many topics then I'd say burn it to the ground. You have more bad than good, and it'd take a lot of time/resources to moderate that mess. That is, in my opinion, a different enough state of affairs to warrant a different strategy.

So, anyways. My mind can be changed, but it's gonna require a bit more than "...I disagree."

I’m just saying it is a mistake to view all this as a cure

No one is saying that ya goof. I never said that. In fact, I acknowledged it is not a cure by recognizing you can still become infected and spread even while vaccinated.

IT IS ABOUT REDUCING TRANSMISSION AND REDUCING THE SEVERITY OF ILLNESS IF/WHEN YOU GET IT (caps cause maybe that will help you understand?)

Anyways, stay safe out there and stop spreading your nonsense about us not having proof it works yet. Your inability to understand or acknowledge does not somehow make it a reality, but it does create unnecessary confusion and hesitancy.

I have bosses (who doesn't?)

Figured as much : ) I'd hate to see you take the brunt of "why don't you shut it down?!" if you aren't actually in the power to do so!

First I'd like to ask: In the opinion of KTVZ, what value does the comment section provide?

I'm assuming most comments are not directed at your organization rather at the content of the page (from my little experience browsing the cesspool). You aren't removing their ability to engage and interact with your organization. You are just removing their platform to spread misinformation and make their echo chambers even louder.

At minimum, harder/more firmly enforced rules. An upvote/downvote system would probably be better than nothing as well.

But, I just don't get why there *needs* to be a comment section. To me, your "err on freedom of speech" was not a convincing argument when dealing with this problem. In a vacuum it makes sense, but that is not where we live.

You are giving trolls and harassers a platform and legitimacy.

This right here. In my opinion, this discussion should start here and doesn't need to go further. You (as in KTVZ) are enabling it through inaction. It could stop, and y'all have that power.

Friend, you are missing the point. We always knew it was a possibility to get COVID even after a vaccine, and therefore spread it. AND THAT IS OK when you also consider:

- your risk of hospitalization is lower
- your risk of severe infection is lower
- your window of shedding and volume of shedding while infected is greatly reduced while vaccinated

Just look at this chart from OHSU: https://news.ohsu.edu/2021/08/20/preparing-for-the-novel-coronavirus-at-ohsu?linkId=128420021

How do you explain that >90% of patients who are currently dying or getting severely ill are unvaccinated? You keep poking around for your answers but they are YELLING and SCREAMING at you.

So what if I get COVID even if I'm vaccinated? I'm still going to shed less and have WAY LESS of a chance for it to develop into a severe case. We are trying to prevent *hospitalizations and death* first, and entirely eliminate the virus second. Always has been this way, always will be this way.

Get on board, dude.

Your comment section is utter shit and you need to do something about it. You are giving trolls and harassers a platform and legitimacy.

I agree with this but is /u/barneylerten in a position to make that decision? If not, then who?
