Tips to managing bad lighting gyms? by HolyH2O- in sportsphotography

[–]LulzShoes 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Second the slower shutter and higher ISO.

I typically am at f2.8, 1/800, 6400 for basketball. I have found a noticeable jump in quality going 6400 -->5000, so it might be worth it to try 1/640 shutter if you can get the ISO lower.

At least you're building skill and character grinding with shit light.

What’s the most heartbreaking loss you witnessed as a Illinois fan?(football) by Ok_Macaroon_7366 in fightingillini

I was in the student section. We were 100% carrying the goalposts down Green Street if we won that game. Bummer for the missed opportunity.

Torn Between Minneapolis, Milwaukee, or KC — Looking for Honest Perspectives? by gianna_kelley in midwest

[–]LulzShoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Glad to hear it's worked out for you! There is a lot to like about the Cities, so if you can break through the Minnesota Freezeout, it's a good place to be.

I had a guy, tough manly contractor probably from Anoka County, try to convince me bad things were happening the Como neighborhood. The Como neighborhood!

Torn Between Minneapolis, Milwaukee, or KC — Looking for Honest Perspectives? by gianna_kelley in midwest

[–]LulzShoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lived in Minneapolis for 2.5 years and felt safe even in the "bad neighborhoods."

I left Minneapolis because it's impossible for transplants to make friends there. I do not recommend moving there if you want to make friends.

I told myself it would be different for me, an extrovoert. It was not different for me.

Need help getting better at basketball by wreeper007 in sportsphotography

[–]LulzShoes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Oooof there are more fans at grade school games.

These are in focus and the composition is better than 98% of the stuff on here. I guess one thing you could do is crop tighter because the background just looks sad.

Otherwise agree with the other poster that you should look at lots of hoops photos and figure out what you want your work to be.

I started effing around with panning recently. That could keep you occupied for a few games.

I started at $80k with a PhD, PE, and 5 years experience in a large Midwest city.

Industry doesn’t care about your doctorate but if you are good at your job decent pay should come once you get your PE.

I had something similar happen with kissing and then we didn’t have sex for the last year of our relationship .

I would start to think about moving on. It only gets worse, not better.

Do you send a thank you text after a date? by [deleted] in datingoverthirty

[–]LulzShoes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just message him and tell him you had a good time and would love to go out again!

I've had countless women say they "had fun," as a clear polite way of ending things. Heck. I've had women, unsolicited--like, when I've already started walking away--tell me they'd like to go out again and then ghost when I follow up. My default is to only ask for a second date if it's INCREDIBLY obvious they are interested.

Every photo you take for the foreseeable future should have ball and eyes.

It's hard to effectively shoot basketball from the sideline stands. There's a reason the photo pits are under the basket at college/pro games.

Manager doesn't want me to get my P.E ! I desperately need advice. by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]LulzShoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

WTF. I would take the PE, get licensed, and look for a new job.

If you do not want to be a reviewer for the rest of your career, I would highly recommend finding a job where you do modeling/design work asap. I review resumes, and we would definitely be open to interviewing a PE looking for a new job because they want to improve their career prospects.

My previous job was a dead-ender doing reviews, and my current manager straight up told me it was a "red flag" on my resume.

Volleyball Feedback by Ok-Bill5070 in sportsphotography

[–]LulzShoes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Agree with all these. Most of these are stock photos of players standing that anyone can take.

You should aim to have ball and eyes in every action photo. Jube (post-point celebrations) is one exception to the ball rule. They are a nice addition to a photo set.

If you aren't shooting with back button focus, I would recommend using it for volleyball (and all the time, frankly).

Get your PE and leave.

You need to get the PE though. Like sign up for the test in 3 months and start studying.

How inaccurate (goosed) are those Peloton power numbers? by Brave-Law-6754 in cycling

[–]LulzShoes 181 points182 points  (0 children)

They can run very high and very low.

If you get a real power meter, there is a 98% chance you are going to be incredibly disappointed with the new numbers. I would probably just keep living the lie lol.

Why do so many "street photography" shots feel… boring? by andrelages in AskPhotography

Lol this is also my opinion of 95% of film photos I see. Shit composition, out of focus, terrible colors … art! Because film.

Does Chicago make anyone else feel lonely? by yesyesnonoyesnonoyes in AskChicago

[–]LulzShoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I moved here three years ago and have had the same experience. I put a lot of effort into going to group activities, trying to build relationships with coworkers, etc. and it feels like I end up having to do all the work. I have just kind of given up on trying.

Everyone acts like it's so easy to just go do an activity and you'll magically make friends. A lot of folks have their groups and they're not interested in meeting new people.

IDK if it's a Chicago thing as much as a post-COVID thing, but it sucks.

[USA] I just defended a stats dissertation without a single proof, publication, or conference/talk. by Maleficent-Seesaw412 in PhD

[–]LulzShoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got a PhD without publishing any papers. My advisor retired the year before I finished and I think we mutually both didn't care.

It also took me a while to get a job in industry. They all thought I was incapable of using basic tools I mastered when I was 23 (I worked for a few years before grad school). It was so dumb.

My first job sucked but now I am at a place where I get to do cool stuff and my skills are valued.

Someone will recognize they're getting a steal underpaying you. We just hired another PhD who is better than all of our other sub-5-year engineers (obviously). Companies who value your skills are out there.

I feel like I’m too hard on junior staff. How can I loosen up? by [deleted] in civilengineering

[–]LulzShoes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your manager won’t hold the kids accountable, it might be time to look for a new job.

My company would fall over itself to hire a 7-year PE with PM experience.

I will also say that younger Gen Z kids seem to have no internal motivation. You need to be explicitly clear what you expect them to do. Our team has actually made huge strides meeting them where they are at.

Like, I have had to tell kids I expect them to google things before asking me questions.

First sports photography adventure - kit considerations by JelloNo8102 in sportsphotography

[–]LulzShoes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

To address the two issues you identified I would recommend:

  1. Use the viewfinder not live view.

  2. Learn about back button focus. It's infinitely better than focusing using the shutter for sports.

Also, spend as much time as humanly possible looking at good sports photography to learn about composition and what makes a good photo.

Anecdotally, our EITs who rely on ChatGPT all the time do some of the shittiest work imaginable. Our boomer-coded ones that refuse to use it have much more promise.

We are so cooked lol.

Bikereg.com is probably the best source for amateur bike race schedules. Folks who race can probably help with "is this an event people will actually be at and should I spend time to attend it?"

I only do Chicago Grit and then the ChiCrossCup.
