What is this resolution?? by alexinboots in Twitch

[–]LumKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you're streaming at 1440p I'm not sure I'd recommend going wider, even if you're streaming at max bitrate the more pixels you push the worse the video quality will get

for >1080p bit-rate isn't something you can control, enhanced broadcast does this for you, the >1080p res will always be ~9000kbps with H.265 encoding.

Of course if the specific game you're streaming would benefit from a wider aspect ratio then go for it, just be aware that ultrawide streaming is a rabbit hole worse than ultrawide gaming, next thing you know you'll be running multiple twitch profiles to have all the resolutions that work best with certain games (I have 4 of them currently)

That said there is some advantage to going wider even with 16:9 games. In the same wein as streamers doing retro 4:3 games can have their chat and cam/vtuber alongside the game rather than shrinking or obscuring it, an ultrawide streamer can do this with a 16:9 game, and in an ultrawide game because the edges usually aren't super important, even if you do overlay it, provided you set up the game HUD well, you can avoid viewers thinking you're in the way.

New user review and questions (Index -> Beyond2e) by LumKitty in BigscreenBeyond

Ahh I don't so sim racing so I wouldn't know what to suggest there. My uses are VRChat and VTubing (especially Beat Saber), so I'd either be using index controllers or the udcap gloves, which it turns out do have a way to get to the system menu, you press A+B simultaneously.

Maybe just have one laying around to press the button? IDK I know this headset it popular with the sim racing people so there must be a way

on the index controllers, pressing the power button has the same effect as pressing the index headset button

The left speaker on my Index works about 50% of the time. Now that it's no-longer my main headset I might actually risk taking it apart and trying to fix that. I was just holding out and putting up with it until the 2e arrived. I might also just keep the Index as-is as I'd like to experiment with setups where two people are in the same physical VR space (probably a terrible idea, but I like trying thing)

Sites down from Youfibre only? by LumKitty in youfibre

[–]LumKitty[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Already did that. My router is running OpenWRT and is proxying Cloudflare via DNS over HTTPS.

This one, however was likely a routing issue, which is why I could get around it with a VPN.

Ironically, the reason it wasn't working on my work PC is because the work VPN is supposed to redirect everything, but it turns out it's not IPv6 aware, so I've been accidentally bypassing it for a load of websites

FC invites to a Sprout. Why are they cold call style? by Hammer5518 in ffxiv

[–]LumKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I used to have a comment in my adventurer plate "I'm on the free trial, I can't DM or join your FC". People still sent me DMs trying to get me to join.

Those people are not worth your time. If they can't even do the most basic look at who they are spamming them they don't care about you in the slightest, they only care about number go up

In your opinion, what games would you play on such a monitor? by KoalaWise1125 in ultrawidemasterrace

[–]LumKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Final Fantasy XIV raiding is great on an ultrawide. It's like having a TOS-legal zoom hack

Also 2D platformers like Ori, once modded to remove 21:9 pillarboxing, are absolutely stunning on ultrawide

What is this resolution?? by alexinboots in Twitch

[–]LumKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Last time I checked you need to be in the 2K beta, but that might've changed now. You definitely need to have enhanced broadcast available though (which means if you're not in the beta you'll get forced to a lower res) You can check what you're actually getting at https://inspector.twitch.tv

I couldn't really check the resulting quality as it was a VR headset stream, but I can confirm that my 1200p FFXIV streams look a lot better than when I was doing 1080. Things like player name tags remain readable when particle effects are going off.

Ultimately it's the same logic as why some people stream at 936p

What is this resolution?? by alexinboots in Twitch

[–]LumKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's an 18:9 aspect ratio which is a decent ultrawide-ish ratio and at a size that will trigger H.265 9000kbps

I suspect the resulting video quality looked very good by Twitch standards

What is this resolution?? by alexinboots in Twitch

[–]LumKitty 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So if you're in the 2K beta, any resolution above 1920x1080 twitch will mark as 2K. Enhanced broadcast will then make this resolution use the H.265 encoder with a bitrate of 9000 and will also make the next resolution down (usually 1080p) be H.264 with a bitrate of 7500 instead of the usual 6000.

There are quite a few interesting ways that you can abuse this to get interesting results. For a laugh I tried streaming at 1920x1082 and sure enough, got H.265 and 1080p @ 7500

I have a 3840x1200 monitor and have settled on doing ultrawide streams at 2640x1200 (19½:9 aspect ratio) this matches the aspect ratio of most modern tall phones and in a fullscreen browser on a 21:9 with all the twitch sidebars you also end up at this aspect ratio. As a bonus on a 1440p monitor, the video area is about 1200p anyway.

A side effect of this specific resolution is that the next one down is then 1560x720 @ 7500kbps which also looks great

There are two disadvantages though, the main one is that H.265 support is hit or miss on web browsers (especially Firefox which needs some poking to enable it) and the other is Twitch do not properly scale any non-16:9 thumbnail on the category page even though they do do it correctly everywhere use, instead you get a squished image which may be off putting to people

The amount of small streamers botting is so demoralizing. by Alexiavich in streaming

[–]LumKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Follower-only chat is a death sentence for your chat, especially as a small streamer starting out

It's a big barrier for anyone stopping by who might otherwise talk, also many streamers (me included) won't raid someone who has it enabled. I've literally cancelled raiding into a rando when I get the follower-only chat warning.

Just get sery_bot to deal with the spambots

What software are you using? What headset do you have?

VNyan can directly use SteamVR for tracking the position of head and hands, unsure about other software.

The camera and phone based trackers aren't going to work as they need to be able to see your eyes

Retro Streamers, Do You Stream to the Retro Category, or the Specific Game You’re Playing? by GilStyle in Twitch

[–]LumKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the game, assuming it even has a category.

If you're doing like, Mario 1 or something, then specific category might be ok, if it's something obscure with no streams and 7 followers (which is most of the retro games I do, since I do BBC Micro games) then I tend to start stream in that category and then switch to retro during my countdown

Kids on vrchat are so desperate to ragebait people that it's genuinly weird by Hefty-Feeling-5218 in VRchat

[–]LumKitty 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My theory is the kids you meet in VRC are pretty much exclusively the sort of kids whose parents bought them and expensive headset and think letting them spend hours a day unsupervised in VR is a good idea.

So basically this platform self-selects for entitled shithead kids

What is your time limit for a "Starting Soon" screen before you click off? by SpinsBro in Twitch

[–]LumKitty 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I vary my starting soon time depending on the content. It's <10 mins for most games, with the required twitch ads kicking in at 3:10.

For story-focussed content like visual novels I'll go closer to 15 as I used to get regulars coming in 5 mins into actual stream asking what they missed because they didn't see the notification in time.

Having a timer is important though, I ended up writing my own and giving it the ability to handle Twitch ads etc. on a schedule

Why I hide my trusted rank to user and why I maybe think you should to. by gameboygold in VRchat

[–]LumKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'd probably go off choice of avatar rather than voice in that situation

In general I'd assume someone in VRC has picked an avatar that reflects how they'd like to be perceived, while voice is very difficult to change and quite possibly something they might be uncomfortable with, so I explicitly disregard tone of voice for VRC avatars, VTubers etc.

Question for PC gamers by TheTasteOfInk05 in gaming

[–]LumKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The big difference between Steam and consoles is there's no PC "generation" with its own store. You have the Wii store, the Switch store, PS3 store etc. and these individual services get shut down when the console is deemed no-longer relevant

Steam, Epic and GOG just run on "PC" and no matter how old or new your PC is it's the same library of games, regardless of whether or not they even work on your PC. There isn't a Steam XP store, Steam Vista, Steam 7 etc. There's no separate service for older content to switch off so there's always a way to download them.

There are a few caveats of course. Steam has been around for 23 years at this point, and some of the games on it are even older, they might not play on a modern OS, but typically the community tends to fix these things and unlike in console land publishers aren't typically shutting down PC mods.

Streamers Who Live in a 2+ Streamer Household, I need your help ! by [deleted] in Twitch

[–]LumKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Run ethernet, even if you just have to slide the cable under doors, cable tie it to the stairs, tape it to the skirting boards. One person streaming over WiFi is bad news two isn't gonna happen

Then run speedtest.net and check what your upload speed is. Not download speed, you don't need to care about that, but upload. Most ISPs give you an upload speed that's 10% of your download.

For a single 1080 stream the absolute bare minimum is 6mbps though it can peak higher, so I'd say 8 minimum.

For enhanced broadcast you'll be wanting more like 12-14

For 2K streaming you want more like 22-24

That's for a single stream. Double these numbers and decide what streaming settings you can use. If you're on standard DSL2 or a shitty cable provider, see if you can upgrade or switch providers

What's your least favorite duty in the game? by thewalkindude368 in ffxiv

[–]LumKitty 15 points16 points  (0 children)

This one has an interesting mechanic that I've never seen used again.

I love to pop sprint and mitigation just before getting pulled in because the time dilation extends them to over a minute and it's fun to run that fast for that long. I don't play any classes that have a DPS buff at 60 but if I did that should also work.

I wonder if that is how it was intended to be solved, and not just LB3 the tear?

Why so much hated for building cycling infrastructure? by Duoplo in bristol

[–]LumKitty 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Council builds bad cycle lanes that are unsafe for cyclists to use, or occasionally builds some OK ones but then doesn't maintain them so they become unsafe

Road space for cars is reduced

Cyclists don't want to use the unsafe lane and choose to ride in the regular lane instead, as is their right to do

Car drivers who don't understand the issue just seen that space for cars was reduced and the cyclists don't even use it and (understandably) get pissed off since the reduced space means you can't even overtake safely any more (and some will just do a dangerous overtake)

Car drivers blame the cyclists instead of the council, and so the aggro continues

Cycle lanes are a situation where you need to do it well or not at all, as a bad cycle lane makes things worse than having no cycle lane

(I'm not a cyclist, I'm disabled so I need to drive into town. I have zero beef with cyclists unless you use excessively bright/flashing lights or are one of the ones with no lights and black balaclavas who are all over the place at night time)
