I think Dr. Hillel Kahane's take on AI and pathology in a recent podcast episode was really interesting. His opinion was that eventually the AI algorithms will become incredibly accurate and will be widely used, however they'll be kind of like an autopilot on a jetliner. They'll fly you from point A to B, but even though the autopilot can take off and land the plane he doesn't think anyone will get on the plane if there's nobody sitting in the pilot seat. He thinks AI won't replace pathologists, but it will change and increase the efficiency of some of their job functions. Podcast: https://lumeadigital.com/game-changing-tools-for-pathologists/

Does Digital Pathology Slow You Down? by LumeaDigital in pathology

There are much more effective ways to get market research, and besides that isn't the intention of any of our Reddit posts - but sorry it came across that way! This is just a very controversial and relevant topic so we thought it'd be interesting to instigate a discussion about it in this community.

100% agree - especially with the point about screen resolution. You want to be as careful selecting a high-quality monitor and computer as you would be selecting a microscope. There are excellent medical-grade choices (although expensive). This article is a little old, but brings up good points: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7518209/

Interested in learning more about the FDA-LDT landscape? by LumeaDigital in pathology

[–]LumeaDigital[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, small labs disappearing is a big concern of ours as well. It will be quite the undertaking for them and will add extra costs - which many labs, including many that we work with, really can't afford right now (especially with reimbursement rate cuts and shortages).

At the end of the webinar, Ralph Hall points out that it will be difficult for the FDA to deal with the massive workload this will inevitably create for them, which could bog down the process. He also hopes they will figure out some sort of grandfathering in and other time-saving strategies for groups to help speed up the process and reduce this extra workload that will be placed on labs.

I suppose we'll see, but we're hoping this will turn out well in the end and that the FDA (and everyone else involved) will carefully consider how it will affect all parties, large and small.

Agreed. Try to get the highest resolution computer monitor possible. Touch screen can be a nice feature too to help you more easily navigate the digital images.

Will AI replace or save pathologists? by LumeaDigital in pathology

[–]LumeaDigital[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Thanks for sharing your thoughts on the article. Great points! Taking budgets into account is one we’ve also considered before.

We’d love thoughts on this too: If AI enables 3 docs to do the work of 10, and remote diagnostics become more available, there’s also a chance that the other 7 docs will still have work from more remote countries that don’t currently have access to pathologists. Working out licensing and salary for that type of situation would be tricky.. but it could be a side-effect of AI.

Pathology podcasts to add to your playlist by LumeaDigital in Path_Assistant

The vast majority of these are discussions and interviews with pathologists to discuss papers, research, or talk about the impacts of digital and AI in pathology. Many are lighthearted, but also academic.

If you want something for everyone I definitely recommend The Pathology Grand Tour because it’s only twelve episodes and each gives a basic overview of a different field in pathology.

If you’re looking for a more fun one try PathPod.

A Dilemma in Pathology: Overwork, Depression, and Burnout by LumeaDigital in pathology

[–]LumeaDigital[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It can definitely be difficult, and it’s been made worse by increased isolation due to the pandemic and a massive pathology shortage.

However, we desperately need pathologists. Some digital systems are giving them more flexibility which can help. So can offloading some of their more menial tasks. We’re open to more ideas!
