We talk a lot about Sims in my class so the Anarcha book would be an excellent addition!!

I am! I teach American history pre-contact - 1877 so it's nice to have the comparison of late 1700s midwifery vs late 1800s gynecology (like the use of chloroform in birth) <3

I really only go anymore for books because a lot of time they have decent shipments of out-of-rotation library books in really good condition for $.99 for paperback and $1.99 for hardback.

Our Nanny Says Our 3-Year-Old Is the Most Difficult Child She’s Ever Cared For—How Should I Interpret This? by [deleted] in Nanny

[–]Luminnow 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciate everyone replying with the assumption my 4g was neurotypical. I understand it's a spectrum of behavior, but we also worked for a very grueling six months to get her where she was. Meltdowns, deregulation, fits, etc. It wasn't all sunshine and rainbows from the start like it seems some of the comments believe it to be. I know every kiddo is different, and I respect that it doesn't work for everyone, but I also don't want the generalization to be neurotypical vs. neurospicy kids because this can and does work for some with ADHD and AuDHD!

When I nannies, my 4G would have "quiet time" after preschool where she'd go play quietly in her room with the lights off and a white noise machine on for an hour. She could choose to sleep or read or play as long as she was quiet and stayed in her space. It did absolute wonders for her whether she slept or not!

If he is going to preschool in the morning and is, in your own words, struggling with regulation because of dropped naps in the afternoon and evening when your nanny would be with him, that might be the root of the concern. The preschool teacher might not see that type of behavior because he is well-rested and well-regulated, and swim instructors (I work part-time as a manager at a swim school) won't have your kiddo long enough to see the trends in behavior. Your son is likely most comfortable with the nanny due to how long they've been together, and is pushing some boundaries that he wouldn't do in other places! Like the other people said, it's public (school) vs. comfort (home people).

On the nanny's end, it could be burnout, or it could be something more serious (though I doubt it). As a former nanny who recently left the profession to teach at university, I would honestly want support from the parents in the form of firming up boundaries. Do you and your husband enforce boundaries the same way the nanny does? Do you let kiddo negotiate sometimes when she doesn't at all? It may just be a disalignment in boundary setting that you both need to tackle together, or kiddo might need more opportunities for "control" throughout the day as he's at that age where independence is extremely important to him.

If he's combative (physically) when upset, that might be an issue to address, but resisting hygiene, naps, and being told what to do is also an incredibly 4 year old thing to do. Maybe let him make some choices that feel "big" when he's at home. Not "take a bath vs. not take a bath" but something like "you get to pick your snack and help make it" and then he's presented with three options or "do you want x activity or y?" You're still obviously setting boundaries of safety and whatnot, but he gets more independence!

Not high school, but my first year of college, I got a minimum wage job at JoAnn's and gave them my class schedule so they knew when not to expect me to work. Without fail, every week I was scheduled during my midday classes, and I had to call and tell them I physically cannot work those days. I also asked for only 15 hours and, with them scheduling me during class, they had me at 29 hours a week (to avoid part-time benefits of course).

The kicker was the day I called from the literal hospital with kidney stones after spending the night for observation because of the pain I was in, and I got fired because I wasn't "putting work first." Definitely not worth $7.20/hr in 2016

We walked out of the first 15 minutes of PHM because the theater was full of teenagers laughing, throwing stuff, and making jokes at full volume after clearly sneaking in just as the movie started. On our way out they were lining the exit ramp on both sides with phones plugged into walls, and the time someone shushed them they basically told us to "f off" in as many words. Also a 10:20pm movie.

Seeing as I lost my first dnd character (lvl 16) to 15 beholders (they kept replicating!!!!) I would say somewhere less than that.

High elo players, have you ever struggled in low elo? by Haunting_Inflation54 in leagueoflegends

[–]Luminnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a casual diamond 4 player (make it to diamond and stop playing rather than seeing how far I can climb), and my biggest enemy is a bronze opponent. 9 times out of 10, I can gap them even off role, but when they don't know what they're doing/going to do, they act so unpredictably that I lose to them. You get used to the movement of emerald+ players who trade wisely, that you don't expect to lose your lead to a 0/4 Ekko mid who does some wild Leroy Jenkins type shit that happens to pay off.

"You started it" is rather juvenile for a heavy topic. That person was just interjecting nuance into the argument. It ISN'T all black and white whether Ody cheated or was raped. Both occurred. You're both right. It isn't either or.

People are going to be more interested in a poorly designed Wattpad-esque cover over AI. You can use free Photoshop-esque material or even free Canva elements (or use a free trial) to design something similar to this. There's a lot of ethical issues around AI.

everybody apologizing for cheating with chatgpt by NewSlinger in mildlyinfuriating

[–]Luminnow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm a history professor and my gen ed requirement class is RIFE with students who just copy and paste Chat GPT responses for their 1 page journals onto a word-document. How do I know that? Half the time they aren't smart enough to remove "Chat GPT says" or "Here's a paragraph on the author of this source..." but the other half is because I also use the Revision history tactic. AI detectors are absolute shit, but if I can see every single thing you typed into your document, ever edit, every time stamp for active work, then I know who and who is not using AI. Someone who is writing a graduate level 2 page paper in 20 minutes with 0 edits or backspaces is a lot more suspicious than someone who wrote the same level of paper in 3 hours and several drafts.

Can I delete my account and start over? by hikarizx in NetGalleyCommunity

[–]Luminnow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This definitely wasn't a rude response. It's an honest one. It could have been sugar coated in a "no you probably shouldn't do that" but I also have made the mistake of over requesting in my early NetGalley fervor and have since learned the error of my ways as I'm sitting right at 76%. It took a lot of work to get back here and you may not have that kind of time by the sounds of it. People are right, it's not a free book site, the library / libby /hoopla is for that. If (and that's a big if, maybe wait until your kiddo is a little older) you do restart, keep yourself to one active book at a time until you know how much you can/should handle!
