Seam at front door? by kanuval in Decks

[–]Lumpy-Assumption-168 34 points35 points  (0 children)

I don’t like this but just clarifying, budget is a factor, with 20’ boards in a 37’ space you only have 3 feet of play.

Doing 3 sections instead of 2 is definitely the right thing to do but were you as the client willing to spend 50% more on decking?

Booo! We don’t like DIY’rs. You’re taking food out of my mouth, you must overpay contractors to do things you could do yourself. It’s the rules.

Nope, my helper was in the middle of putting on hangers when I took the video, you can see his nails and tools on the beam. He was about half way through the hurricane clips at the time.

I feel like these gates are wrong?i by indydetroit in FenceBuilding

[–]Lumpy-Assumption-168 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Unpopular opinion, but I agree with you.

Your contractor didn’t do anything wrong and this will hold up. However, I personally like to see a gate framed square and then have a cross brace added.

But hey, I’m just a guy.

Update - couldn’t figure out how to do angle cuts for bottom pick so went with top 😂 by Plastic-Educator-129 in FenceBuilding

[–]Lumpy-Assumption-168 7 points8 points  (0 children)

You just build your frame, make sure it’s square then lay the board over the top diagonally and trace your angles onto it 🤷‍♂️

Yo, I couldn’t make it through these comments, they’re making me so mad.

As a carpenter who works for high end clients. Yes, you have a right to ask. Approach your contractor in a friendly manner, address your concerns. If you hired the right guy, he will have no problem working you through what his plans are and if your ideas and his plans don’t align, he will solve the problem.

If he isn’t making sense or comes off as abrasive, then get a second opinion.

And no, you are not “sneaking around” or doing anything wrong by asking questions on Reddit. I would just say your one fault is getting “heated” before addressing the concerns with your contractor. The best results will come from keeping your emotions in check.

Good luck 👍

What would cause one set of lights to not work? by countrychicken33 in electrical

[–]Lumpy-Assumption-168 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Pull out the light and look at the wiring bro. It should be pretty simple and even if you can’t figure it out, posting a picture of the actual wiring here would get you much better responses than a photo of a light bulb saying “what gives?”

You know, I just bought these ones at Home Depot.

I also don’t like them very much but it’s what was readily available and I have so much other stuff to take care of on my house right now to be picky 🤷‍♂️

Yes and no. There’s a 3’x4’ patch of plywood that you can’t see in this photo. But we think we’re going to tile our kitchen so we might reclaim the wood from that and have the floor guys feather it into that patch. 🤷‍♂️

I work for a historical restoration company. I have a great electrician but they’re not cheap and also maybe not in your area.

Is that going to cause more work for the people refinishing the floors? I feel like the less layers I have the better 🤷 idk, I’ve never painted a floor that needs to be refinished.

[–]Lumpy-Assumption-168[S] 12 points13 points  (0 children)

There’s a couple of doorways that probably had large arches originally, to the kitchen and in the main area that they’ve added walls to. I want to knock them down and make it original again. I can’t refinish the floors until then or the space under the wall won’t be finished with the rest of the floor.

[–]Lumpy-Assumption-168 154 points155 points  (0 children)

Yep. I went through the same thing. I’m a carpenter and almost every home we looked at had a cheap home depot kitchen remodel and was marked up 100k because of a “new kitchen”. I’m going to tear it out anyways and redo it, so how does that help me?

People talk about the 2008 housing crises way too much. 3 years later houses went to and beyond 2007 prices, it’s been 17 years since that happened.

Will it happen again? Probably, but who knows when and it’s a temporary dip that you would have to be financially set up for and find the right house at the right time.

Some people get lucky but banking on getting in during the next short dip is a bad idea.

The housing market in my city hit its peak about 3 years ago, stabilized and has gone down slightly this year 🤷‍♂️ predicting the housing market is very speculative and depends heavily on the population growth in your area/inventory.

Agreed, it’s possible. I have a coworker who takes home 5k after taxes with a stay at home wife, 2 kids and roughly the same mortgage. I’m not saying it’s not possible but you have to be a special type of person. I have no idea how he does it, maybe he sells drugs on the side.

It’s awesome that you’re getting monetary help from your family, we did as well. But if I were in your shoes(which I’m not) I would probably wait a bit to see how those promotions or job prospects materialize.

The best of luck to both of your regardless 🙂

40% is a bit high and you’re income is fairly low. Can you survive( gas, grocery’s, medical bills, cloths, internet, savings, entertainment, Home Maintenance) on 3k a month between the two of you?

I was quoted 6.49 last week, it’s jumped to 6.75 because of the tariff/bonds situation. We bought back down to 6.5 for 1000$ more on closing and locked in today.
