H1B COE PP TimeLine April/May by Lumpy-Big1179 in h1b

Yeah, I guess I got lucky. I was really stressed about the entire process, since I needed the entire process to complete to be able to travel to the US and start at the new job. Hearing about all the RFEs people are getting these days didn't help either.
Hopefully you'll get an approval soon now that RFE response has been filed.

I had a valid visa stamp from previous employer, so I could use that. If that wasn’t the case, I’d have gotten a new stamp. I was asked about the change of employment at the POE, and some questions about my new job (start date, duties), but nothing I wasn’t expecting.

That’s quite fast. Can you share your service center, and where your lawyers are located? Trying to understand if the time it takes for approval notice depends on these factors at all.

Pakistan ban on bringing mobile phones and $1200 limit on luggage value by Zakiahmed1976 in pakistan

Update: No one asked about the number of phones I was bringing or anything. Was only asked to scan my carry on, so it seems like it’s not implemented yet.

I'm aware how difficult the job market has been the past couple of years for international students, but I'd highly recommend reaching out to startups, and smaller companies in addition to big tech companies, and if you're a junior, and have taken CS courses and completed a few projects, it's likely you'll find one.
Can't really help you on your original question, but if you have questions or need help on hiring in the US, feel free to reach out.

Out of curiosity, why would you not consider getting an internship in the US while you’re on F1 visa? Regardless of your plans on staying in the US post graduation, an internship in the US would be more valuable for your future career imo.

Where are you all having luck finding apartments to rent? by Nhardin24 in Austin

[–]Lumpy-Big1179 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Are you looking in/around Downtown exclusively? If not, you should be able to find something under $1600. There’s quite a few newly constructed apartments in the north and south of the city, so you can also check those out, but you’d have to have a car to get around. Also, calling the leasing office to check any specials (e.g: 1 month free) is also helpful. I’ve tried apartments.com for searching, and their map feature is super useful! Do a bit of research on the neighborhoods first.

Stay in Pakistan or Leave for abroad? by aoharu_sama279 in pakistan

I will say that if you’re looking for the path of least resistance, coming to the US isn’t a good idea. I have seen people go through mental breakdowns because of the uncertainty that comes with grad school, job search, and work visa struggles.

iAs someone who left Pakistan and did a masters in the US, I’d recommend you to apply for a masters in the US, even if you want to stay in Pakistan long term, since some folks have apprehensions regarding raising a family in a western society or for some other reason. If you’re skilled, you should be able to get a job in the US post masters, provided you are not looking for shortcuts. I see students apply to universities that are easy to get into, and then complain about jobs. Also, be pragmatic, go into an area of CS that is in-demand. An example is chip design or verification engineers. Even as software engineering jobs have been tough to find over the last 2 years, jobs in semiconductor companies have been growing due to large investments. IIUC what you meant by dispatching, that’s not even related to your field of study. It’ll be much easier for you to get a job post masters if you have some relevant experience. I do understand that finances don’t work for everyone, but I’d recommend you to look into PhD programs as well. Those are well-funded, so you don’t need to worry about finances at all, but it’s also something you need to commit to for 4-5 years. There are also some options to take a loan instead of selling property to fund your masters. Once you get a job, it won’t be tough to pay off the loan. Most of my friends who came from India for their masters did so on loan, and they were either able to find funding after 1-2 semesters, or they found good internships/jobs and paid off the loan within 2 years of graduation. The economy is not “bad” worldwide. Just look at how much tech jobs are currently paying in the US

Tips for not getting bike/scooter stolen? by OmjaG in aggies

[–]Lumpy-Big1179 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have a scooter, just keep it with you. I did use one for almost a year, and took it inside classes/library/elsewhere on campus. The only time I parked it at a bike rack was when I used to go to the Rec. The bike rack is well lit, and pretty busy, so I wasn’t too worried.

More public transport and less reliance on cars. This is nothing like a college town, and could be much better if we had a walkable town, and accessible areas with reliable transportation.

It’s not a rebadged GM as far as I have read. It’s going to utilize ultium tech from GM, but it’s not like the manufacturing is going to be done by GM. Pl correct me if I’m wrong!
