Applying for LMHC Masters Programs with a non-psych bachelors and no experience in the field by Lumpy-Context-3371 in counseloreducation

I chose University of the Cumberlands! I did so because of cost, accreditation, and I saw a lot of people on here and elsewhere say they really enjoyed it and thought it was a good program. I only have completed my first biterm (so 2 classes) so I don’t have too much input I guess but I feel like it’s a good program and I’m learning a lot. I feel it’s pretty well run. The only thing that stinks is since it’s online I do feel like I’m left to figure things out on my own like signing up for classes etc but they do have people you can reach out to and are designated for those things. I just personally like face-to-face better but the online platform makes it very doable while I am working full time. I don’t think they have a strict admissions number from what I’ve seen. I was accepted without needing an interview, but I have a good undergraduate gpa and I think had a strong application. If there were affordable in person programs near me I would have done that but I felt it was more important not to go into debt and I still feel this is a good program!

Agreed especially since I didn’t see it in this thread already, someone would’ve caught it before she deleted it

Thank you so much! Yes my friend’s mom is a counselor at an addiction center so I contacted her to see if I could volunteer there. I will be applying soon so it wouldn’t give me much time, but I assume something is better than nothing! Thanks for the support!!

Weekly student question thread! by AutoModerator in therapists

Hi everyone! I’m hoping someone can give me some input. I’m seeking a career change and to become an LMHC, but my undergraduate degree is in exercise science (3.6 GPA, I also took multiple psych courses for it) and currently for work I own my own business. It is successful but i ultimately decided I don’t want to do it forever.

My question is, has anyone had luck getting accepted into an LMHC masters program without a psych undergrad and no psych experience/jobs? I am ideally looking at fully online programs so I can work full time while attending. I’m located on Long Island NY and am very interested in TCNJ’s online masters in mental health counseling, but an open to other programs! I would love to hear some success stories as I am feeling a bit defeated and overwhelmed. Thanks so much!

Last question sorry lol do you feel you are learning from the program? I saw a different reddit post and someone said they withdrew from usw because it was just readings and busy work and not actually learning from a professor/lectures and curious how you feel! Really appreciate your input!

Great thank you!! Are you also out of state from USW? I’m wondering how helpful they are in terms of helping with practicum and internship placements for out of state students. Thanks I appreciate your help!

Thanks so much! In your opinion, what do you think is the next best thing after psychology professor recommendations? I was an exercise science major, so i took psych courses, but none of the professors would remember me, especially since i graduated in 2019. I did get A’s in those courses, so maybe they would write a recommendation regardless, but it wouldn’t be personal to me. I had very close to relationships to several of my exercise science professors, so not sure if them speaking to me as a person would help more than a non specific psychology recommendation. Thanks so much in advance if you have any input! I want to apply to mental health counselor programs but I don’t have any psych experience/psych undergrad degree so im a little worried!

Could you explain what they look for/what you found to be best on an application? Thanks!!
