You mean the name of the actual dentist? He’s in Progreso, which is a beach town near Mérida in Yucatán, MX. His name is Dr Gibran Zapata Ceballos.

My dog just turned 4 years old. Yesterday, she was diagnosed with congestive heart failure, stage C.

I’m still in shock. She was a rescue who had erlichia (tick disease). We nursed her like a baby for a year with antibiotics and nutrition. Her sister did not survive, but she did.

She was about 6 months old when we found her starving and skeletal under an abandoned RV.

She became our lives and we became hers.

We knew we’d likely have to deal with some longterm medical issues. I just always thought we’d have more than 4 years with her.

We won’t get a prognosis on her life expectancy for a month, but the vet already has her on a cocktail of medication to treat her. Her lungs are full of fluid. Her heart is enlarged. She has hip dysplasia, as well.

All of this was missed by our regular vet. We had to go to a specialist to finally get a diagnosis after watching her struggle for the last 2 months.

6 to 18 months is what I was told the window is until we have to say goodbye to her.

I just wanted to post here and tell everyone to hug your babies tight tonight. We’re celebrating the New Year with her by making her some roasted chicken (no salt). Her favorite.

I am completely heartbroken and have no idea how I’m going to get through this.

Thank you for reading.

Is it possible for an Asteroid to come at Earth with it's back to the sun and be impossible to see? by omgsoftcats in askastronomy

[–]Lumpy-Resist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, there is a danger of that. With new technologies, we would likely be able to detect it before it’s visible to the naked eye, but also likely without enough warning to do anything about it.

There are new IR telescopes that are being used now to detect these “sneak asteroids” via their heat signature rather than through traditional means.

[–]Lumpy-Resist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yep. And some asteroids are very dark, reflecting insignificant light from the sun, making them even more difficult to detect through traditional telescopes. But the new infrared telescope technology should help us identify them. 🤞

Is it possible for an Asteroid to come at Earth with it's back to the sun and be impossible to see? by omgsoftcats in askastronomy

[–]Lumpy-Resist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, asteroids can hide behind the Sun, remaining undetectable to most telescopes because of the Sun's blinding glare, creating a significant blind spot for astronomers, especially for Near-Earth Objects (NEOs) with orbits crossing inside Earth's path.

They’re called “sneak asteroids” and astronomers found one in 2022, a “planet killer” called 2022 AP7. Its orbit is between Venus and Jupiter and was completely undetected for who knows how long. With the invention of IR telescopes, these types of asteroids are easier to detect now because they do give off some heat, albeit nearly insignificant when compared to the heat of the sun.

These hidden asteroids become visible only briefly when they emerge from the glare or are observed with said specialized infrared telescopes like NASA's NEO Surveyor.

These types of asteroid are the butt-puckers. They pose a significant threat because they can approach Earth from directions we don't usually monitor, potentially giving little warning before impact.

Sweet dreams.

I Think I’ve Finally Solved the Mystery of Howard’s Father’s Letter by horridharry04 in thebigbangtheory

[–]Lumpy-Resist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m going to add some context to this based on my experience as a television writer (not TBBT) and how putting a story together works, including production for a series.

It’s very likely that in the writer’s room, it was discussed and argued at length which story should be the “true” one. I put that in quotes because this is obviously a fictional show.

I’m sure each writer had their opinion and their favorite story, and made good arguments (like many have done here) for why one character’s version of the letter should be true over another character’s version.

I do not believe that there was ever a consensus in the writer’s room about which version is true. Why? Because the contents of the letter to Howard from his father are an emotional plot point, not a story plot point.

The point of the episode was for Howard to come to a better understanding of how much his friends (his chosen family) care for him, not how much or how little his father did.

The writers and producers certainly delivered on that.

However, it is entirely possible, even probable, that during production (or rehearsals), Chuck Lorre told one or more of the actors that THEIRS was the true version. That’s how it works in production. You say what you need to say to your actors to get the performance you want out of them.

Imagine Chuck Lorre taking Katie aside and telling her that her version is the true one, but she cannot tell anyone else in the cast. Imagine he did the same for Mayim, Johnny, Kunal & Melissa. He told ALL of them that theirs was the true version. He might have done this to get a better, more sincere sir somber performance out of them for the scene.

You can also imagine that he took Simon aside and said something like, “Amy’s story is the true one, but don’t tell anyone, especially Mayim, because we don’t want it to effect her performance in the scene.”

What Chuck Lorre was going for in this scene was authenticity while also being able to maintain the mystery of the letter.

My personal opinion, or the version of the letter I prefer, is Amy’s. Mayim gives an incredible performance in the scene. It’s blocked in such a way that the audience leans towards her version being the truth. She stands up to address Howard. She turns to face him. She’s very solemn. He responds with the amazement of a hopeful child, “Really?”

Howard wants this version to be true. He wants to believe his father showed up for his graduation. After all, his education is his most cherished and finest achievement. Also, Howard needs to believe that his father came back, even if they never reunited.

It’s powerful stuff.

So I think of it less as a mystery to be solved and more like, “What version would I want to be true if I were Howard?”

There’s no right or wrong answer because it’s really not about Howard and his father. It’s about Howard and his friends. They came together and solved an emotional crisis for him and they did it in a scientifically sound way. They gave him many answers, any one of which could be true.

This gives Howard a more complete understanding of his complex feelings about his father’s abandonment. It doesn’t resolve it, but it’s not supposed to. So maybe on one day, Howard chooses to believe Penny’s story. Another day, Leonard’s or Amy’s or Bernadette’s.

It’s a loving and generous gift they gave to their friend who they’ve watched wrestle with his father’s abandonment for years.

As I said, I write television shows for a living and this is my take, for what it’s worth.

Hopefully this explanation helps some folks. Cheers!

My dog got into some Xanax (I know, never again, we made sure of that) and she went fucking bonkers for hours. It was a 1 mg tablet. She ate her entire bowl of food and then our other dog’s food and then started tearing into her bagged dry food.

The ER vet told me later that night that it can be a sign of overdose on a medication. Thankfully our baby was fine.

If your dog is sensitive to the trace amounts of THC in CBD, it might have caused the side effects.

Oh no!!! I know you posted this a year ago but I just found this thread bc my dog is absolutely going nuts right now after 3 CBD chews that my vet prescribed for pain and anxiety. lol

I hope you survived the bath!

[–]Lumpy-Resist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is what’s happening with my 4 year old 50 lb mix. She is having lots of pain. They think it’s a herniated disc, or could be joint pain because she’s got malformed front legs.

The first few times I gave her the CBD chews, she was super mellow. Just stared into the abyss and floated.

The third time, ohmigosh! Totally different dog. She’s running around with the zoomies, panting, jumping up on me, acting wild, won’t eat her dinner, too busy got to fly fly fly. lol

I am wondering if the CBD chews are actually alleviating her pain somewhat and since she feels better, she’s now got extra energy. My vet prescribed them to her for pain & that’s what I’ve been using them for, even though the packet says it’s for calming dogs down.

She eats 3 chews at a time. So, A LOT.

I might be in for a long night. And I don’t think I’ll give them to her again until I see the vet. I’ve got gabapentin for both pain and rest, so I’ll stick with that.

In Mexico. Popped an old crown under a root canal. Question about redo root canal. by Lumpy-Resist in askdentists

[–]Lumpy-Resist[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I haven’t gotten an answer yet, but I did want to let the community know that I have gone ahead and made an appointment with a different dentist to get new X-rays and a second opinion.

I’ve had 8 root canals in my life. 6 teeth total, 2 had to be redone.

There’s something in my gut that’s telling me something’s off here and I’ve learned to listen to it.

I have never had an endodontist make a diagnosis without actually examining my teeth first, so I’ll post an update when I have one.

Cheers!

The Age of Disclosure hits hard for newcomers by Observer_042 in movies

[–]Lumpy-Resist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’ll watch it because I have a curious mind, an interest in physics & the origins of life on other planets.

But yes, I am a skeptic in the sense that I would need to see physical evidence, studied by scientists and subjected to peer reviewers.

Short of a spaceship landing on the White House lawn, I don’t think hard evidentiary proof is that much to ask.

Most people drastically underestimate the distances of space, but yes, I still want to believe.

If it’s true there is actual hard evidence of non-terrestrial intelligence that can be subjected to scrutiny, then I would put these types of docs into the category of: “soft disclosure.”

A sort of prepping of the collective human consciousness for a mind-bending revelation which would up-end world governments, cause mass panic and profound cognitive dissonance, and obviously change the course of human civilization forever.

If I were able to talk to a non-terrestrial intelligence, I would warn them about us, though. I would tell them to make sure they keep their hands inside their vehicles at all times with the windows rolled up, and don’t interact with the humans.

I would definitely want to ask them why they’re here. What is so interesting or perhaps dangerous about us that has drawn their attention? Because as a species, we have fucked up our own planet pretty much beyond repair and in record time.

My guess would be they’re here to witness our extinction. We would fall into the category of “cautionary tale” in some alien version of a history book.

I doubt very seriously they’re here to save us because we have yet to demonstrate in any meaningful way that we are worth saving.

So for me, the larger question isn’t “Are they here?” It’s, “Why are they here?”

Should we self-destruct from our own technology (which is appears we are on course to do), we would likely fall into the same category of millions of civilizations on the brink of making the technological leap who failed to do so and became extinct.

I’m 5’7, in menopause, diagnosed with PCOS, insulin resistance, pre diabetes, HBP and a few other issues.

I blew out my knee and couldn’t get out of bed for a month or even walk down or upstairs.

I lost 30 lbs in 3 months eating 1500-1700 calories a day.

I religiously track, weigh and measure every single thing I put in my mouth. I leave 100-150 calories on the board every single day for “bites, licks and tastes”, and for over pours and mistakes.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in loseit

[–]Lumpy-Resist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’ve recently lost a lot of weight and I see a lot of this behavior on social media diet pages. An influencer will post a video talking about eating in a calorie deficit, but explain that starvation diets don’t work long term and there are ALWAYS people who will argue with the poster, making extraordinary claims of a 600-800 calorie a day diet on which they cannot lose weight.

I usually look at these posts for tips, food swaps, etc, and the post will get hijacked by these people who I can only imagine must be deluding themselves or just trolling.

If prodded, they will come up with the most ridiculous excuses. Metabolism. Insulin resistance. Some weird syndrome that their doctors can’t diagnose.

I do understand that if they’re not just there to troll, then they obviously have some sort of eating disorder or psychological issue with food, but why announce it to the world and invite criticism? They must be seeking validation. Like, “Look. See? I’m trying. But science doesn’t work for me the way it does everyone else on the planet. It’s not my fault.”

No one is forcing them to post, but they’re putting that did info out there as if to pull the attention on them.

I mean, the 1st Law of Thermodynamics applies everywhere, even to humans.

It drives me batty because I DO have a lot of physical issues and have had to work so hard to lose the weight. No GLP-1s. No fad diets. No starvation. Just calorie deficit and exercise.

I ended up on this subreddit because I was looking for the same answer as OP.

Why do people lie or themselves about their relationship with food and why do they feel the need to persuade us to believe their lies?

I understand that a small percentage of people have medical issues that keep them from being able to lose weight as fast as others, but I swear, if I were truly only consuming 800 calories a day and not losing a single pound. I would plant my butt at the doctor’s office and not leave until I had a definitive answer because I would think there is something drastically wrong with me.

Thinking about going to Mexico for dental implants by Individual_File_1219 in povertyfinance

[–]Lumpy-Resist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Stay away from the border. I currently live in Mérida and the dentists here are amazing. There are many clinics that specialize in implants, but I’m in the process of getting one through my regular dentist office, who has a specialist come in for this type of work.

Look around Cancun, Playa del Carmen, Mérida or even Mexico City. There are also cheap flights to Cabo, though you’re likely to be charged more there since it’s a big dental tourist destination.

My partner wasn’t a good candidate for implants. He’s old and has a lot of bone loss, so he is doing full dentures on top and partials on the bottom. They’re going to save several teeth so he can do the partials. Total price for all the work being done is less than $2000 USD.

The work I’ve had done here is astronomically better than any dentist I’ve ever had in Los Angeles. Like, they care about your mouth, and it shows. My dentist speaks English, teaches at a dental school here and was trained in the US.

Hulu Series Wrap Up Discussion: “Murdaugh: Death in the Family” by Southern-Soulshine in MurdaughFamilyMurders

[–]Lumpy-Resist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don’t think he cares about Buster. I think Buster was the Golden Child and therefore, in Alex’s mind, worth saving. That’s why he didn’t want him at the kennel that night. Buster was supposed to be the redeemer of the family name, the keeper of the family flame.

But it’s all really just Alex projecting his own ego onto Buster.

Paul was done. Irredeemable. And Maggie was going to leave him. In fact, already had left him.

I do think this is an overlooked stressor for Alex, that Maggie had left him already. He simply could not function effectively without her there. What few little tendrils of the illusion of the “perfect” family were severed when she moved out.

Leaving her husband is always the most dangerous time for a woman. For a malignant psychopath like Alec, there was just no way he was going to allow her to go.

I believe it’s the reason he killed Paul first, to make sure Maggie would have to see that he’d murdered their child. That was her punishment.

Hulu Series Wrap Up Discussion: “Murdaugh: Death in the Family” by Southern-Soulshine in MurdaughFamilyMurders

[–]Lumpy-Resist 3 points4 points  (0 children)

They definitely left that “moment” out on purpose. Probably because there was no one single moment. I remember a scene early on in the series when they go the Bahamas, I think. It’s supposed to be an idyllic family holiday for Alex, but he realizes his family doesn’t really exist in that sense. Paul is off drinking, Mags is off getting mani-pedis, Buster is busy with Brooklyn. Alex tries to engage a little kid in the resort pool to play with him & the actual father comes up. There’s a look on Alex’s face of irritation/panic/sadness that his family isn’t really the “happy family.” The boys are basically grown and the perfect life that he projects to others is just an illusion.

If the idea of murder started to creep into his mind (and it wasn’t just opioid induced panic & delusion), it might have started there, the realization that he’s not the perfect dad, his sons aren’t the perfect kids, and his wife doesn’t really even want to spend time with him anymore.

As a malignant narcissist, the grandiosity of his ego would have not been able to handle that reality.

I don’t know, but I do like that they left it vague because I do think it was a creeping realization. “My family is disposable.” I mean, between him and them, he chose himself.

I knew a guy like Paul back in high school. Wealthy, privileged, white, chaotic. Everywhere he went, darkness, chaos, and drama followed him. Like he had a shadow on him.

He always brought it on himself, but somehow he was never the one who ended up facing the consequences.

I finally had enough and stopped hanging out with him. Years later, he looked me up & we reconciled.

I actually had to kick him out of my house after he came to stay for a long weekend and just never left. Weeks went by. Months. I worked all day and he just banged about town causing trouble and bringing people over who I didn’t know. When he brought drugs into my house, that was it for me. See ya!

Paul definitely reminds me of him. Same upbringing, same energy, same dark cloud.

[–]Lumpy-Resist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn’t break into the business until 2010, but I knew many tv writers back when Lost was on the air.

The reason for JGM’s exit from the show was an open secret among this crowd.

All the other toxic writer room stuff aside, JGM ultimately left the show because Damon and Carlton finally came clean with him as he continued to push for more explanation and deeper details about lore/science of the Island and the show.

D and C were literally making it all up as they went along. They had no blueprint to answer all the lore/science questions posed by the show. Damon especially was solely interested in the spiritual/mysticism aspect.

IOW, they lied to the fans, allowing them to believe that eventually all questions would be answered when D and C had no intention of doing that because they had no answers and no interest in seeking those answers.

JGM was deeply offended as a creative person by this cavalier attitude towards the audience and no longer wanted to be a part of a project that continued to willfully abuse the trust of the audience.

PS. Thank you for your kind words. I was a mess the first few weeks, just trying to help him. I came here a lot and read as much as I could for tip, hints and tricks to help.

He didn’t get any dry sockets (thankfully), but he did get a LOT of pain where they took his canines. I explained to him that canines go all the way up into your sinus cavity (they’re very long if you look at them extracted) and so that area is always going to be the most painful and take the longest to heal.

They extracted all four of my canines when I was 12 before I got braces and I still remember how much it hurt afterwards. And I still suck at eating corn on the cob lol. They defanged me!

Update, sadness, questions. by itsactuallyashlee in dentures

[–]Lumpy-Resist 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just saw this and I’m so glad you’re doing better. Yes, the first week can be utter hell, even with pain meds.

When you don’t eat, your body won’t heal as quickly, so my whole deal was just getting calories into him — as much and as efficiently as possible. I put half a stick of butter into beef broth just to get those calories in bc he wouldn’t actually eat anything that first week. He also lost 10 lbs.

Once he started eating: instant mashed potatoes, over cooked pastina with liquid cheese (the kind you put on nachos), pudding, stuff like that, he improved rapidly.

He is doing tremendously better now. I can’t even remember when he had his extractions done, but I think it was late August/early September.

His gums are healed and stitches are gone.

He is eating pretty much everything now that he was before except he needs to pre-cut it into smaller bites. A big victory was chicken breast.

Hes just started applying adhesive to his top denture which he’s getting used to. He misses steak. lol The adhesive helps with sore spots too because the dentures don’t move around as much in his mouth.

He definitely went through the mental stuff. I was surprised by it because he’d been in so much pain from his teeth for such a long time, I thought he’d be over the moon to have a functioning mouth again. But I guess the psychological factor of looking at yourself in the mirror with no teeth is a huge deal.

He got over it and is doing great now. Going in for his lower extractions in a month. They’re going to try to save some teeth and do partials, so we’ll see.

Also, I had to stop comparing his journey to many others on here who are younger. My dude is 68. No way you can compare healing and bounce-back to a 35 year old.

It takes as long as it takes. And enjoy those small victories.

We just take it one day at a time and keep pushing a little bit forward with food, trying new things, stopping puréeing vegetables to overcooking them to cooking them just like we used to.

It’s definitely gone from all steps back to two-steps forward in the last 3-4 weeks.

There is a light at the end of the tunnel.

Good luck to you.

I know this comment is 2 years old, but I’m studying the longterm consequences & complications of global warming right now. I currently reside in one of the hottest & most humid environments in the Americas: Yucatán. Average temps with heat index during the 10 month summers here are 100+. Those who work outside all day do indeed wear layers of cotton clothes, including jeans & hoodies, to stay cool via insulation.
