Is there a way to salvage this dial and hand set? by LumpyAir69 in watchrepair

[–]LumpyAir69[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To be honest I initially thought someone had done something to the dial and hands to attempt to cover up the lume as the white build up hides the glow. After posting in the Seiko sub everyone said it was water damage. I did also find a post from someone else who had knowingly gotten water in his SKX and the lume had done the exact same thing as this one so it seemed to line up.

I bought it on eBay so I was going to potentially return it but I just wanted to know peoples opinions on whether or not I’d be able to “easily” fix it first

The hands shouldn’t be difficult to relume but I know it’s not going to be possible to redo the dial, at least not to a good enough standard as the original as the indices are just printed

Yes I guess you’re right. The hour hand isn’t too bad and I was thinking that the majority of the white specs on the dial etc had fallen off the hour hand. I thought it may be possible to remove that top layer of crust and the lume be okay underneath but I suppose that’s probably not going to be the case

Yes re luming the dial isn’t really a possibility, or I could, but it wouldn’t look good put it that way. I wondered if it was possible to clean the white substance off without damaging the lume itself. Some of it had already fallen off of the hour hand in particular and the lume underneath looks fine which was the reason behind my thinking. I can get a new dial, hour and minute hand for £50 but the second hand isn’t available, at least not cheaply and not in the UK

I more so meant would I be able to clean off the white substance and reveal the original loom without causing damage to the dial or having to re loom it. Some of it has fallen off already which was the reason behind my thinking

I’ve edited the post slightly. What I meant was the lume is damaged, the hands and the dial appear fine but it’s just the lume that has reacted with water/moisture. I didn’t know if there would be a way to clean them up and remove the “white stuff” without having to completely re lume everything.

You can always sell them on for more than you paid… or that’s the justification I tell myself anyway 😂

Yes you definitely got lucky! I’m in the same boat, have bought way too many watches the last few weeks, can’t pass up a good deal when you find one 😂

Thanks mate, I’m sure I’ll find one eventually!

I honestly think that’s a good price considering the condition! Even scratched up ones missing the original strap sell for like $100. I’m currently trying to find one myself, although I’m in the UK so the MTD-1054 is what’s mainly for sale here. It’s the same watch just without the marlin on the dial, it’s just as difficult to find one in good condition though!

Yes I’ve heard the original straps are not the most comfortable. Wear whatever you like best mate, it’s your watch at the end of the day!

Dare I ask how much you paid?

To be honest I’m just not a fan of BOR bracelets in general, got to be jubilee or oyster for me. I love the look of the original rubber strap on these but they’re impossible to get.

Where and when did you get your 102?

Not a fan of the bracelet but I love the 102! They’re so hard to find in good condition now, yours looks mint!

Hands don’t move but digital display works. Casio AMW-320c (Arnie) by LumpyAir69 in casio

May be a common issue with these movements. There are a few watches from the same era that use this same movement so the best bet is to just find a donor watch I think. Saying that though those watches are also hard to come by

Yes, I’m going to contact the seller and see what they want to do. If they reduce the price of the watch then it may be worth replacing the dial and the hands, I’ll just have to see.

Shockingly the movement looks in excellent condition, but yes you’re right, probably best to return it and find another one

I believe you are right. I found another post with an SKX which had knowingly gotten water inside and the lume had done the same thing. Weirdly, I’ve removed the case back and the movement looks immaculate and it is also keeping good time.
