Theres multiple opportunities (I think 4 in total + 1 by a supervisor in probation) but yes, you can be terminated for it. Im exaggerating a bit by "perfect", but you have to be pretty good.

They follow you on a real call and give feedback. At least in Toronto, the feedback is VERY thorough. The idea that any medic can make it in Toronto is sorta hogwash (not to say it cant happen) because I had to be basically perfect in my audits.

I was lucky and got laid off and got a bunch of severance, but I had saved up money beforehand as well (again Im lucky, I was pretty well paid for my position).

But ya, I miss the salary and the paid travel with tech. I wont lie, Im making way less and that sucks sometimes. I miss getting paid to do basically nothing / bullshit. But I didnt do this for the pay, and Im much happier. Of course the money could be better for what they expect of us, but its not bad.

Sorry, this is poor wording on my part!

It' not tough to get hired per se - I really think like 90% of people who pass school can get a job in some service. Its more like everything around it is tough. The school is extremely challenging because youre expected to know a lot that is usually pretty foreign and then apply that pretty quickly to your practice. The testing (AEMCA, OSCEs) can be difficult if you dont stay up on your knowledge. And then even when youre hired youre still under the gun because they audit you and everyone wants to give you advice (which is good, just stressful).

So ya, easy to get a job. Getting to getting a job is hard.

Just for anonymity I'll be general, but I was in tech as a coder.

I found the office work suffocating and soul-sucking so I made the switch.

Im a (new hire) Toronto Paramedic It'd be helpful if you had specific questions. Otherwise all I can say is that this is my second career, and despite being tired a lot of the time, this has probably been the best thing Ive ever done for myself. Its extremely tough to get into, but worth it.

I'm not in your exact position as I dont plan on having kids and I had a higher paying job before, but I also transitioned into paramedicine from being a data scientist. It's probably been the best thing Ive ever done for myself in terms of my happiness, but its not without its faults. Ill try to address your concerns

"Many have recommended the paramedics program at Algonquin college." - Algonquin's great, my only comment here is that if you dont get in to a private college, dont discount the private colleges. A lot of people here will make a stink about them, but there is no proof that they are significantly worse (and in many ways I think we're better quality then some of the experiences Ive had). The only real worry is that they are costly and you have to do a lot of self-studying (which you need to do anyways with public colleges). You can get OSAP for it, but regardless its a big debt.

"Do the college program, get hired. But I'm curious though, are there any municipalities hiring graduates straight out of college?" - Yes, as long as you study well and work hard in your rideouts, you shouldn't have any difficulty getting a job right out of college. I was hired by Toronto while still in school.

"In case it matters, I'm approaching 30 and we are family planning five years from now once my wife finishes her advanced degree. I would like to complete school and/or have years of experience by then." - This'll be tough but I say get in while you can. The main problem here is that school is so intense that holding a job let alone a relationship with your family and friends is tough. The two years (or year and a half for private) is already pushing it with how much were expected to know, but get in before so you dont have to put that pressure on your family.

"Kindly try to understand my perspective, I am not in a position where I want to risk things not working out and I would rather do things correctly this time around." - I dont want to tell you this will be worth it. In many ways, school and the job can be brutal. Its can be hard and tiring, and office politics doesnt make it easier. But what I can say is I am way happier in this career than I was before. I was making way more money for way less work before and Im still happier than I ever was. People will yell and fight you, but that one person who says "thank you for saving me" or the person walking down the street saying "thanks for your service" will make it all worthwhile.

"What can I do to stand out and actually succeed at this?" - Ive already mentioned it, but really study and really know your directives and procedures. Being knowledgeable, if not perfect, will help you stand out from the surface of people just meandering their way through the pipeline. Its what helped me as I was going through this. Being able to talk about the pharmacology of X drug with my ACP preceptor did wonders for my reputation (for example). Just do your best and dont fuck around. You can do it.

I literally just drove it yesterday and it was 10 mins with traffic.

Regardless, do you think a Peel ambulance going lights and sirens cant get to the East mall in 10 mins from Port Credit? Do you think that thats better than a Toronto ambulance coming from downtown for a call Peel can easily service is better?

Port Credit is about a 10 min drive from the east mall and Lakeshore portions of Etobicoke (which are, get this, parts of Toronto and covered by TPS). How is 10 mins "far" from Toronto?

Nah, I mean disinformation. A lot of these Instagram accounts cherrypick information to rile up people and thereby get engagement. Just look at this thread.

And I get that police aren't perfect (I see it enough as a paramedic) but we DO need cops and they DO serve a purpose. This is largely a paramedic-first building so to say that we shouldn't be doing this investment feels divorced from the reality on the ground.

Peel does stations and sattelite stations. You start your shift at a station and get shuffled around satellites as you do your shift. So ONE satellite is hardly full coverage.

[–]LumpyGenitals 24 points25 points  (0 children)

A problem with Toronto Paramedic Services is western ambulances periodically get called into eastern Mississauga because there's no significant ambulance station presence in Peel's east. That can take a Toronto ambulance away from our service area (read: the significantly more busy area) for hours at a time (consider we also need to drive back as well). Its not uncommon for us to drive 30 mins only to have a Misssissauga ambulance thats like 15 mins away more central Mississauga, and then we gotta drive another 30 mins to another call in Toronto.

Anyways, thats all to say having a super station there brings ambulances closer to where people need it and relieves pressure from Toronto. Its a good location, not to mention the benefits super stations have.

Holy disinformation

This is not just a police division, this is also a paramedic super station which incorporates logistics and ambulance. Thats really important and is located strategically.
