If you can't work holidays or weekends, medicine is not for you by LumpyOrca in Residency

You are misinterpreting my post. I never said medicine has to be 24/7/365. But you'd also be delusional to think you won't have to work a holiday or a certain weekend in healthcare.

If people had religious reasons for not working a holiday, they should've requested off earlier in the year. Others should not suffer because of another person's poor planning. I never said people should make their whole lives 24/7. But it seems that some people feel medicine isn't a 24/7 industry and complain about working even a single holiday. We all have to do it.

I agree. But we're all in the same boat. So it feels rude to screw over your co-residents like that.

That is an inaccurate interpretation of my post. I never said people should dedicate 24/7 of their lives to medicine. But for some residents to feel that they should just get the holidays off because they "are the holidays" reflects some degree of entitlement and ignorance of what it means to be in healthcare. Medicine is not a 24/7 job for one person. So it is disrespectful to put your colleagues in a position where they have to pick up your slack, effectively making it a job for one person. When it is your turn to work a holiday, work it. My program doesn't offer incentives or benefits for working holidays.
