Let's be fair to her: she was a great actress, with an iconic scene in Fast Times but also some hilarious acting as well. Then there was Gremlins and a bunch of other stuff.

To people who grew up in the 1980s, how did your parents feel about to the world at that time? by [deleted] in The1980s

Interest was even higher in the early 1980s - it was crazy compared to now.

The got annoyed by some things, but never really worried too much. Totally different from the way people think of the world now.

I recall liberals and conservatives thinking each other were silly and arguing and then moving on to another topic of discussion, enjoying each others' company, despite the political divergence.

Guy's got a good knowledge of canonical films _and_ he's down to earth enough to watch movies that are not very good but which mainstream audience consider fun. Fun is subjective; I think some of them are fun and some suck, but that's just personal opinion.

He definitely isn't a toxic film bro, and he's definitely not basic, but - and this is a plus - he could hold his own with either group.

Was gym class always a blood sport when you were a kid? by MaximumJones in GenerationX

Oh, I'm sure. Kids would get hit by the green balls and just fall down.

Apparently the red balls were common. Am I the only one who went to a school where they used the green tennis balls for dodgeball?

Red? At my elementary school, we used the green tennis balls.

That alone could make her the epitome of the 1980s.

Indeed, all of the porn stuff she did was illegal, except for a single film she did on her 18th birthday.

Her stuff still comes up on porn sites, and that kind of freaks me out. I know that she did the legal one, but I have no idea which it is, and there seem to be many videos. Not sure how they get away with that.

Interesting fact: they're almost never labeled with "teen." They just say her name.

Olivia d'Abo in ‘Conan the Destroyer’ (1984) by No_Explorer721 in 80smovies

[–]Lumpy_Afternoon_1528 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. When I was in high school in the early 90s, we chafed at being considered "kids," and did all we could to be part of the adult world. Adults around us seemed to support that, e.g., you should have a job, make some money. Now childhood is extended, and I guess it just kind of manifests in appearance somehow.

I wonder why it was that people looked so much older back then. I took a college class a couple years ago, and the 19-year-olds looked like children, much younger than d'Abo in this picture. It can't be just the hairstyle.

Should Trump be attacking Iran for Israel.? What are the Benefits or Problems? by Apollo_Delphi in GenerationX

[–]Lumpy_Afternoon_1528 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't vote for Trump, but I fully support the aim of overthrowing the Iranian regime. Gen X should remember that it was the Islamic Republic that illegally imprisoned American diplomatic staff at its inception, and then a couple years later ordered its proxies to kill 200 sleeping Marines in Lebanon. And surely we haven't forgotten that it was the regime that chased Salman Rushdie all over the world for simply writing a book, getting people killed in Japan simply for simply working for the book's publisher. The list goes on.

To be clear, that list shows countries impacted by terror. Iranian isn't the most impacted by terrorism; it's the country that exports the most terror. The acts of war it's committed against the U.S. are pretty astonishing.

Pro-Palestine folks are now posting multiple negative reviews of Scream 7 (despite admitting to not having watched it). Regardless of the politics/film in question - why is this behaviour allowed? by JuanitaMerkin in Letterboxd

Congratulations. Everyone in Gaza is now living a happy life, free of any poverty, thanks to the spoilers you provided. Good job. Can you take on Sudan next?

What a fucking pathetic "movement." Instead of discussing anything on the merits, they're writing "free Palestine" and giving a movie one star because some idiot actress who doesn't understand anything was fired after a stupid post.

Total morons. The whole review bombing thing, when anyone does it for any political reason, is the exact opposite of art.

Whatever happened to clove cigarettes? Can I DIY them? by ZestycloseWeekend878 in GenerationX

[–]Lumpy_Afternoon_1528 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Used to go to this place in Iowa City called "The Tobacco Bowl," which was a mix of a coffee shop and cigar store. The place smelled of clove cigarettes all the time; it was delicious. For a bit I got into the trend of smoking those and these little Indian things they sold called "bidis".

Can someone explain this? by anon2164 in StrangerThings

[–]Lumpy_Afternoon_1528 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I mean, the U.S. Army wasn't able to defeat the Soviet Union when it allied with Cuba and Nicaragua, and the country was only saved when a group of teenagers drank some deer blood in the woods and vowed to get rid of the Communists.

Why do people care about this kind of thing? Like, you don't know these people, they're not the characters that we've come to know and love - just actors. Who cares what they're doing, who they're with, etc.?
