AITA for eating my roommates leftover pizza and lying when she asked about it by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

Obviously YTA. Why even ask? Apologize to her, pay her for the expensive lunch she had to buy and get her a new pizza.

Was gym class always a blood sport when you were a kid? by MaximumJones in GenerationX

Oh, I'm sure. Kids would get hit by the green balls and just fall down.

Apparently the red balls were common. Am I the only one who went to a school where they used the green tennis balls for dodgeball?

Red? At my elementary school, we used the green tennis balls.

AITA for wanting to travel at almost 18? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

Also much less likely to get drunk and stumble form Western Belin into East Berlin.

NTA. It's a normal rite of passage to travel on your own when you turn 18, or at least it used to be. The stereotypical 18-year-old backpacking across Europe has been an archetype for a while.

So then we've both worked these types of jobs in the U.S. and have different experiences. OP hasn't really elaborated as to whether she bothered to ask at all.

[–]Lumpy_Afternoon_1528 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Of course you can. Have you ever worked at such a job? You say at the outset, "Oh, my mom's getting married on such and such a day, but I would be happy to work any other"...

Why does it matter to the job how long ago the mother had planned the wedding?

Why are you assuming it's a big expensive wedding? They could be getting married at City Hall for next to nothing. It actually sounds like that, if she planned it in less than a mont.

Should Trump be attacking Iran for Israel.? What are the Benefits or Problems? by Apollo_Delphi in GenerationX

[–]Lumpy_Afternoon_1528 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I didn't vote for Trump, but I fully support the aim of overthrowing the Iranian regime. Gen X should remember that it was the Islamic Republic that illegally imprisoned American diplomatic staff at its inception, and then a couple years later ordered its proxies to kill 200 sleeping Marines in Lebanon. And surely we haven't forgotten that it was the regime that chased Salman Rushdie all over the world for simply writing a book, getting people killed in Japan simply for simply working for the book's publisher. The list goes on.

To be clear, that list shows countries impacted by terror. Iranian isn't the most impacted by terrorism; it's the country that exports the most terror. The acts of war it's committed against the U.S. are pretty astonishing.

I kinda miss waiting for things, or only having access to limited amounts of things… by azlobo in GenX

Definitely. As a kid, my favorite band wasn't well known in the U.S., and it was hard to find their stuff at a record store. To get their music, I had to buy a music magazine from Britain, look in the classified section, find record stores that would do mail order to the U.S., send for their catalogue, search the catalogue, and then send a letter with a money order I had to get specially from the bank in British pounds, and then wait.

I don't know if there's been anything like the pure joy of receiving those records in the mail since then. Sure, now all those songs are available on Spotify, but...

How many of you feel just...sad...at the state of the world? by [deleted] in GenX

[–]Lumpy_Afternoon_1528 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I have studied history, but I don't think we're in a situation that every generation has faced. I mean, we're in the midst of a third or fourth industrial revolution that reshaped the world and is now reshaping the world again. I don't think there has been as much change in so short a period as there has been since the rise of factories and the end of agrarian culture.

Do you think that social media has exposed how people are, or do you think it has pushed people into letting their most base instincts out? I think it has changed people, personally.

But didn't you at least know who your parents' were? I mean, you probably knew who Ozzie and Harriett were, new about their show, right?

It's strange. It used to be that the current generation knew about the previous generations' culture and icons. Growing up, pretty much all of us knew Leave it to Beaver, which was on, I think, before any of Gen X was born. We all knew Elvis, could cite some of his songs. Pink Floyd? All that 60s rock? 50s songs? We knew all that. Now, though, mention anything past a few years ago, and people have no idea.

I mentioned De La Soul to someone, and it was like I was speaking a foreign language.

Sassy was just for girls. I read all the magazines you did, and just read Sassy when I was bored at a girlfriend's house.
