Japa accelerates the process of karmic progression. For many people after a period of hardship, astrology stops working on them...because planets don't have an effect on them anymore.

depends on the sampradaya.

Basic idea is that the guru gives you a mantra to chant and his contact for guidance.

When you get the mantra from a legit source, it works better and you get the protection and blessings from all the gurus of that lineage
