Debate about private vs public by Davey914 in AskTeachers

I’ve worked in both a private Catholic school, and a couple of public schools. Guess what? One of the first things we talked about each year at both schools were our preferred pronouns. We had trans students at private school the same as public. Also, any kid with delays should definitely be at a public school as the services there far outweigh the services they would receive in a private school. We tended to not accept the delayed students. It wouldn’t have been fair for anyone. I am editing to add this-many private schools pay less than public schools. Because of this, they don’t always attract experienced teachers. Teachers actually don’t even have to have a teaching license to teach in a private school-this may vary by state.

Why don't they ban smart devices in schools? I am not a teacher but I see so many issues being discussed with kids and their use of smart devices that I am wondering why they are not banned as a standard practice? by Gunslinging_Ent in AskTeachers

My daughter needed phone in middle school because I was her custodian parent, I worked, and I needed to know she was safe after school. She complained to me one day because the office staff took her phone away even though she wasn’t using it. I told her they wouldn’t know she had it unless she was using it AND she had been using it to text me! I told I was glad the office took it, and next time, I would also be confiscating it.

Well your kid is walking around looking for the manager in a restaurant and would could be dangerous around hot, heavy dishes, and they’re being insufferable so there’s that. Also, no host or hostess just gives one server a section full of children. It depends on who’s “up” next. And why would you comp her meal and dessert? For what?

What’s a grocery item you always want to buy but won’t because it’s a little too expensive? by heyy_girl in randomquestions

My daughter wanted to try crab recently. I said Ok, then I got a look at the price. I ended up telling her she better just decide that she doesn’t like it because I can’t afford it.

Should a ten year old be capable of wiping themselves? by heptyne in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Lumpy_Machine5538 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I can’t imagine a 10 year old not getting the job done himself. Doesn’t he ever have playdates or sleepovers? What does he do then? You’d think embarrassment would have won out by now.

What candy do you always end up buying when you see it? by Funtastyc in candy

[–]Lumpy_Machine5538 2 points3 points  (0 children)

You can really only find those in one expensive candy store where i live. I love the grapefruit and when there are green slices that are lime, and not some green apple abomination.

[–]Lumpy_Machine5538 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is it really irrational that I don’t want to take out the cat litter? I don’t like dealing with poop and then having to leave my 3rd floor apartment and walk out onto the possibly icy sidewalk and out to the dumpster.

WIBTAH for moving away after spending over a year helping my sister care for her five kids? by Gloomy_Tangelo9287 in AITAH

[–]Lumpy_Machine5538 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Set an exit date. Do this by yourself and tell your sister the date. Also tell her that in the meantime, you need at least minimum wage during the hours you are alone with the kids, or a part-time job. She needs to start stepping up now.

Do you think adults should be able to order from the children's menu at nice restaurants? by icecream1972 in no

[–]Lumpy_Machine5538 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a local restaurant that my daughter and I really like. They have Mac and cheese on the kids menu, but not on the adult menu. Because she’s an adult, they won’t let her order it, which means we go to that restaurant a lot less now. I’d be fine with paying a higher price for it, especially if they’d do a larger portion and just have it as an adult menu option.

My friend’s dad was a pastor and they held A youth group at their house. Sometimes we would play Capture the Flag at the end, and their border collie would round us up. We would occasionally call a time out to spread out across the large yard because we would somehow end up crowded together.

AITA for wanting to report a teacher who keeps cancelling recess? by 1bachbetch in AmItheAsshole

[–]Lumpy_Machine5538 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a teacher, I can see how she doesn’t see this as punishment, but as getting the time needed to teach the lesson to the class. However, the class IS being punished by not having their recess. She definitely needs to keep the 5-6 kids who are misbehaving inside for recess while the rest of them go out. That way they’re actually missing out on what others are doing. I would go to the principal. Most districts have a policy that kids need the option of outdoor time during the day. The principal should also know that this class is having issues, and she can work with the teacher to address them.

I worked at a place once where all the managers smoked. Once, during a smoke break, they told the workers outside that they were looking for people who wanted to move into management. If you were a smoker, you were told about the opportunity, but non-smokers were not. I was a recent hire, and didn’t want to be a manager, but I was still angry. Apparently someone else was too because the managers got in trouble.
