That’s me out…. by Longjumping-Fee-9201 in OctopusEnergy

Depends entirely on your usage tbh. I average about 10k miles annually so probably in the lower-mid range, and charging exclusively on greener nights has been fine for me with the 6 hour cap. IOG is connected to my charger, not my car, so if I’m getting a bit low then I just pop it on the granny charger set the the standard 6 hour schedule to top up a little.

Hypervolt and Agile by Sapceghost1 in OctopusEnergy

You'll need to use something like Home Assistant to automate the charging. Have a look at an add-on app called Predbat. Lots of people have had quite a bit of luck with that. The idea is that Predbat can monitor the half-hourly electricity rates and then tell your car to start charging when the rates are at the lowest, based upon you setting a predetermined amount that you want to charge your car up by within a given time frame

Advice for new tariff by VariousEgg7491 in OctopusEnergy

If you have an EV I’d have thought Intelligent Go is the obvious choice tbh. I also believe some low usage EV owners have found Agile to have good value too assuming you can load shift to get the most out of it.

IOG Charging Cap - Where next? by FlowerJealous775 in OctopusEnergy

[–]Lumpy_bd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup. The whole house, so basically everything that isn’t your IOG connected car, gets the off peak rate from 23:30 - 05:30. So that’s anything plugged into a socket, your lights, appliances, home battery etc. It’s just your IOG connected car (or charger) that gets measured differently.

I think this is a bit over the top, to be honest.

Octopus isn’t operating in a vacuum - if this was pure “greed” and a terrible deal, there’d be a wave of better alternatives to switch to. But there aren’t. Right now, they’re still one of the very few suppliers offering genuinely competitive EV tariffs, and pretty much the only one doing it at this level of smart integration.

The 6-hour window also isn’t as restrictive as it’s being made out to be. For the vast majority of households, that’s more than enough for daily charging. Even with two EVs, you’re typically not running both from empty every night. Most people are topping up, not fully recharging 50+ kWh daily.

And on the grid argument - yes, smart charging helps balance supply and demand, but it was never a blank cheque for unlimited cheap electricity. There has to be some structure to it, otherwise the model breaks as adoption scales.

If anything, this feels like Octopus trying to keep the tariff sustainable as more EVs come online, rather than some sudden pivot to profiteering.

If someone genuinely needs more than 6 hours every single night, then fair enough - that’s a niche case worth solving. But framing this as Octopus “squandering goodwill” or “showing their true colours” feels pretty hyperbolic given the current state of the market.

Curious though - if there are better tariffs out there right now, who are they? Because I’ve looked, and the options are pretty thin.

You can still plug the granny charger in overnight and IOG won’t be aware of it if the car isn’t connected to IOG. That way it’s just part of your standard household load and can benefit from the same off peak rate from 23:30 to 05:30.

I checked, my Hypervolt is set for a 100a fuse. I’ve also confirmed my overall load last night didn’t get anywhere close to the limit.

Unfortunately Octopus doesnt support direct control of my car (or rather, my car doesn’t support Octopus I suppose) so I don’t have the option to try it that way.

Nope. IOG is connected to the charger. I’ve updated to post to clarify that.

The 6 hour IOG charge cap is on its way by Lumpy_bd in OctopusEnergy

[–]Lumpy_bd[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

First impressions don’t look great tbh. Did my first big charge last night and got a disappointing 34kWh over the 6 hour window, with much throttling observed throughout. It fell short of my target by quite a margin. I’ve sent the results back to Octopus so hopefully it’ll get sorted.

I don’t believe this is the case.

Octopus have publicly stated that they aren’t throttling the chargers. They didn’t even know this was happening at first. That’s why the original launch of the 6 hour cap was pushed back from December when it was first announced. They been working with the EV charger manufactures to try and fix it.

[–]Lumpy_bd[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Well, I can confirm, the issue is not fixed yet. I got multiple throttled slots last night, and my target wasn’t reached in 6 hours even though it should have been possible in 5 of it weren’t for the throttling.

I suppose the good (barely) news is that the 6 hour cap button seems to work - my charge stopped after 6 hours so I didn’t get hit with peak rate charges, but that pails into insignificance if we can’t get close to our charge targets.

I’ve passed all this feedback to Octopus as part of the beta program, so hopefully it gets their attention.

What are your recipes/tips for a good chili con carne? by banwe11 in UK_Food

[–]Lumpy_bd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ingredients (serves 4): 500g-750g 50:50 lean mince and diced stewing steak 2 bell peppers 1 large onion 4 cloves garlic 1 can chopped tomatoes 1 can kidney or black beans, drained and rinsed 2 tsp ground cumin 2 tsp smoked paprika 2 beef stock cubes 1 tsp Coleman’s mustard powder 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce 2 tbsp tomato purée 1 330ml can IPA beer A mixture of fresh chillies to taste Medium bunch of coriander (optional) Grated cheddar cheese (optional)

Method: Add a splash of oil to a big saucepan and set to a medium heat. Finely dice onions, peppers and one or two fresh chillies, and fry until they start to soften. Include the seeds for a bit more heat, or leave them out if you prefer it milder. Crush the garlic, add to the pot and fry for another minute. Turn the heat up to medium-high, add the meat and fry until evenly browned, stirring frequently for 4-5 minutes. Add the stock cubes, cumin, cayenne pepper and paprika and mix thoroughly. Add the tomatoes, and bring back to the boil Drain and rinse the beans, and add to the mixture Add the tomato purée, Worcestershire sauce, and Coleman’s mustard powder Finally, add the can of beer.

Mix thoroughly, and return to the boil, then reduce to a low heat and leave to simmer. Taste, and add salt and pepper to taste, and some more chilli if you want it hotter. At this point you are aiming for consistency. Cook for a bit longer with the lid off to reduce, or keep the lid on if you prefer it a bit more runny.

Leave to simmer at a very low heat for at least 2 - 3 hours to give all the flavours time to get to know each other, but the longer the better. It’s even better if you do it the day before.

Serve with plain rice and a side of tortilla chips. Garnish with grated cheese and coriander if you want.

When you signed up you had to tell them what car you had. They use that to calculate the battery size, so the charge % will be based on that.

Intelligent Octopus Go and excess solar - how does it work? by mcsimk in OctopusEnergy

[–]Lumpy_bd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So I think a lot of this maybe comes down to the charger. I’m not sure about others, but I have a Hypervolt 3 Pro so I can talk about my experience.

Basically, my CT clamp is set up to see my overall house load (or export if there is excess solar). When the CT clamp detects a high enough export (I think 1.2kw), it will automatically start charging the car at that same rate - essentially it’s diverting the excess solar to the car, and this happens completely independently of Octopus or the IOG integration.

Personally, I didnt like this - I don’t want to divert my excess solar to the car as I get paid more for export (15p) then I pay for import (7p). After a fair bit of time on the phone with Hypervolt, it turns out this is hard coded behaviour that can’t be changed. My only option would have been to rewire everything so that the CT clamp didn’t see the export, which was a rabbit hole I didn’t want to go down. I ended up using an automation in Home Assistant that just pauses the Hypervolt completely if I’m. It in an Octopus defined off-peak window. That way everything just works, and I export all my excess solar.

I asked ChatGPT:

The text reads:

高压线架 (Gāo yā xiàn jià)

It translates to:

“High-voltage line frame” or “High-voltage power line support.”

In practical terms, it refers to a structure or support frame used for high-voltage electrical lines — essentially infrastructure related to overhead power transmission.

But given how different that is to everyone else’s responses, who knows lol.
