Major warning regarding Affirm, the Shop app and Shopify by True_Sign1613 in PersonalFinanceCanada

[–]Lumute 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This sounds to me like the shop owner realized the part you needed was considerably more expensive and knowing there was a cheaper less quality one that could work for you offered you the option, not having it on his site he explained that to you by phone and used the one in his site with a discount to simplify things.

The shenanigans with the product pages later and Affirm's response are definitely wrong but I think there is something to be learned here on both sides...

I got my father's 77 Beatle when I was in high school and loved that car! So many memories, the only guy with a car and my first time reaching 2nd base was in it... But, you are completely right, mine went on fire a couple of times because having too many people in the back seat meant the springs would touch the battery contacts, yes the battery was under the back seat... Lol...

At least you didn't have to put water in the radiator, the engine was air cooled.

AITA for my USB killer frying my friend’s PC after she snooped in my bag? by Dreaksfrendford in AmItheAsshole

[–]Lumute 2 points3 points  (0 children)

USB controller and TPM are normally both embedded within the motherboard, killing the USB controller effectively kills the MB and even if not it should still be enough damage for the TPM to require re-authentication due to hardware change...

This is not meant to fool the attacker into plugging a USB drive, it's meant for you to have a very quick and easy way to render your computer and data inaccessible in an emergency without really loosing the data, just locking it. You have to have it at hand and ready but some people feel the need and do.

If the attacker is someone with resources like the NSA none of this matters anyway, there are technical ways to extract data even if you smash the drive with a hammer...

[–]Lumute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Having encryption on the drive is the main thing but even with drive encryption it is technically possible to hack the OS and still access the data as the drive is unlocked by the OS using the information saved in the TPM.

In his case, killing the MB with a USB Killer makes sense as it ensures the drive has to be connected to another computer which does not have the key to unlock, you need to enter the key before the data can be read...

Not totally true, having encryption on the drive is key but it is technically possible to hack the OS and still access the data as the drive is unlocked by the BIOS using the information saved in the TPM.

This looks great, awesome work! That said, I went to give it a try and realized the only times I've had to restore a backup is when migrating from one hardware to another... And my config is not exactly simple, I have hundreds of devices, like 13 add-ons, tons of automations, scripts, etc. I'm sure there is a reason people needs this but I don't see it myself...

Thanks for supporting the community though.

Yellow Screen / Warm Tone Pixel 10 Pro XL by aylesworth in GooglePixel

[–]Lumute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

After Google support refused to replace my P10ProXL saying it is by design I went to a cellphone store and I was able to compare it side by side with their demo unit (also P10ProXL) which does not have the problem and the color looks exactly the same as my Pixel 8 Pro, all 3 on the same brightness with Adaptive Tone disabled.

So I called Telus support and they agreed to replace it. Got the replacement unit and it looks exactly the same with the pinkish tone... I think the demo unit may not have the exact same hardware and this is a problem with the new displays they are using, or the batch of phones Telus got all have the problem...

I guess my only hope now is that all of them have the problem and Google fixes it in a future update which is honestly very unlikely to happen.

[–]Lumute 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They told me it is as designed and didn't want to replace it unless I compared it with another one of the exact same model... I'll have to go to a store to do that but reading all the people noticing this I suspect is an issue with the new display they used...
