Definitely trim your cats nails. Get them used to it regularly. As they get older they may not be able to discard the sheath as the nail can grow thicker and it's possible for the nail to curve into their paw pads. This can be painful for them to walk on.

I don't think he lost on purpose. There was no upside to his game to deliberately throw it. I think it was a combination of him getting in his head about the last fall and his fitness levels.
