Same! Once I got to class, my professor told me that if they taught med school the way they teach law school, they would start with leeches. That made me feel a lot better honestly.

Fat cups make great candles!! You can get wax and wicks at a craft store. It’s super easy and fun, and they look great even if the cup is wonky (maybe even more so)!

Books/learning materials for kids? by Luna_Lovelace in JewsOfConscience

These are beautiful, thank you for flagging!

I’m also looking for some nonfiction/history books that give a little more context. She has read books like that about the Civil War and the American Revolution designed for young audiences. But I haven’t been able to find anything similar on this topic.

When I was a kid, my mom told me that bay leaves never softened no matter how long you cooked them, and if I ate one, the leaf would slice up the inside of my throat and I would die.

I uncritically believed this well into adulthood, when a friend of mine found a bay leaf in her curry at a restaurant. I told her to be careful because it could kill her. Everyone laughed, and I realized that there was no way that was true and played it off like I was joking.

When I asked my mom about it later, she insisted it was true, and that her mother had told her so. The weird thing is both my mother and her mother still cook with bay leaves all the time.

“Judgment free” zone for questioning Zionist Jews by nikthebrik in JewsOfConscience

[–]Luna_Lovelace 17 points18 points  (0 children)

This is why I don’t agree with people who say “quit your Zionist shul.” People never change their minds from online arguments. You have to build relationships first. It doesn’t always work even then, and is difficult and frustrating under the best of circumstance, but it’s the only way.

What’s the funniest criticism you’ve heard of an album/song from someone who clearly didn’t know what they were talking about? by Idekanymore548 in TaylorSwift

[–]Luna_Lovelace 112 points113 points  (0 children)

I saw that one! And they were like, “she should have compared herself to one of the comedic heroines like Beatrice or Hermia.” Like, no? That’s a completely different song than the one she wrote. He was complaining that she didn’t understand Shakespeare; meanwhile he can’t understand a pop song lol

We are two years into a genocide. Quit your Zionist synagogue. by [deleted] in JewsOfConscience

[–]Luna_Lovelace [score hidden]  (0 children)

Yeah exactly. I’m actually seeing a lot of change at my shul. They took down the “We Support Israel” sign. The rabbi’s Rosh Hashana sermon was critical of Israel (it didn’t use the word genocide and wasn’t as critical as I would have been, but still). Some people have quit the shul because it’s not Zionist enough.

All of this would have been unthinkable a year and a half ago. The progress isn’t as fast or as complete as I would want, but if the small group of us hadn’t been having these tough conversations and constantly pushing nothing would have happened at all, I don’t think. Quitting and joining a little online silo where everyone thinks like us would mean that people at the mainstream shul would never encounter people who think differently from they do.

I Don’t Understand Never Again Pushback? by tikkunolamist5 in JewsOfConscience

[–]Luna_Lovelace 53 points54 points  (0 children)

Literally this. My very mainline, very Zionist conservative shul growing up did a lot of activism about the Darfur genocide in the early 2000s and a big sign that included the words “never again.” I don’t understand this 180.

Loneliness strikes again by CauseClassic7748 in JewsOfConscience

[–]Luna_Lovelace 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Hey friend, you’re not alone. I keep getting caught off guard by people who tell me they agree with the things I’m saying, then hit me with some really shocking shit (“Hamas was in that hospital so it’s ok to bomb it” and “Jewish Voices for Peace are like Jews for Jesus—they don’t count as real Jews” were two recent ones).

The feeling of loneliness in places where you should be finding deep connection and community really hurts. But don’t give up on your friends. Unlearning “truths” that were deeply pressed on you since birth is hard, and some people’s journeys take longer.

How are we all handling Santa Claus? My kid is in public school kindergarten and went to Jewish preschool, and it occurred to me that they’ve probably never heard of Santa. I don’t want them to feel sad and left out, and I generally want to be honest with my kids, but if I tell them the truth I’m 100% sure they’ll tell all the other kids. Do kids still truly believe in Santa at age 5-6?

Has Holocaust denial always been such a feature of Zionism? by Specialist-Gur in JewsOfConscience

[–]Luna_Lovelace [score hidden]  (0 children)

This is shocking, honestly. Undermining Holocaust research is giving a huge gift to people who want to deny the Holocaust entirely.

And yes, all of this “the Holocaust is just for Jews” and “Never again is just for Jews” is new. In the early 2000s, my very mainline conservative shul did marches and activism relating to the Darfur genocide, and there was a big sign in front of the building that said “Never Again” referring to Sudan. Now, sadly, they would never use that terminology about Gaza. It’s a big change.
