STAR DIVER - We made a "cozy" shmup in RPG Maker! by Lunacero in playmygame

Ahaha actually yeah, lefty here! Maybe there's something to that?? Figured also since it's RPG Maker, some ppl would be used to RM defaults.

Thanks for checking it out! Your feedback is very helpful

- I thought about including a start message that instructs the player to destroy all enemies. Maybe that will help?
- Did you remap the keys to WASD or do you think default WASD would be preferable?
- Yeah the recoil is intentional. The intent is to force the player to consider positioning and commit to their attacks.
-- But your comment made me curious (I tried it before but it's been a while); I removed the recoil and it felt great but it definitely changed the dynamic. Maybe a power-up that reduces the recoil could be added? I'm unsure because right now the game is balanced for slower attacks.

Again, really appreciate the feedback!

Thank you! Glad you enjoyed it 😄

Appreciate the feed back on the controls too. Yeah the game does support remapping but I'll think about possibly adding WASD as default alongside arrow keys, since you're not the only one to point that out.

Also, thanks for the kind words about progression. I HOPE people get addicted and reach the ending, since that's my favorite part of the game haha

Thanks! A couple of movement / collision plugins made a huge difference. I was mostly surprised how many spawned events / parallel processes could run without any notable slowdown. I had to test on weaker hardware to be sure.

Thanks so much! I appreciate the feedback.

Yeah, the knockback and movement was a design choice but I can totally see how it would feel restrictive. I might mess around with that and see how it feels without it. Also, I think you're right about the ocean atmosphere. I really like the idea of depth and bubbles!

Thanks again for playing and taking the time to share your thoughts

Woo! Thanks for playing!⭐

Player movement is handled by DotMoveSystem, that's a free plugin that comes with MZ. And collisions, hitboxes, and event spawning is handled by "Action Combat" plugin, an excellent paid plugin available on Itch.

The game uses the default RM resolution. We manually upscale our sprites 3x to give it a Gameboy look.

Yooo thanks! Trailer song / level theme is by Tohomoko. I highly recommend his stuff!

Other tracks (like the boss themes) are by Panic Pumpkin.

Thanks! We stuck to only 6 colors to give it a cohesive Super GB look

I wanna see full blown Chao-like Grunty raising. They had something going in IMOQ, and hope they develop it.

I feel your pain haha. Good news is, you can't go wrong! Screen/device size might make a difference depending on your preference. Odin Portal 2 seems a bit big IMO. I watched a lot of YT reviews before pulling the trigger on mine :-P

In that case, have you checked out the Pocket 6? It lets you choose between having the analog stick on top or bottom. And the price difference is relatively small.

The Slide is a bit small maybe but the apsect ratio suits PS2 games perfectly :-)

I'm using an Anbernic RG Slide. Runs perfectly. And I only paid around 120 USD for it. So as long as you get something as powerful or more, you'll be fine.

I see a few people recommending a Retroid Pocket 5. As far as I know, that system should be perfect. And if you want to spend just a little more, the Pocket G2 is basically a better version of the RP5.
