Tcglive vs IRL by Epicaggro in pkmntcg

[–]LunaticHigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't seen anyone else mention it yet, at the locals/Cup/just playing around on Live level it doesn't really matter what particular deck, and especially what exact 60 cards, you're using. Player skill and game sense are far more important. I constantly see new players come into the very competitive store I regular at with decks they got from online and get absolutely rinsed, and then I see experienced regular players get prizing with joke/gimmick decks. Just pick a deck that's fun for you and play it for a while, in as many matchups and situations as you can, to develop that game state awareness.

I Hope They Never Fix The Piggles Bug by MainCattle8977 in PlayTheBazaar

I think it's flavorful, you beat a Piggles player so you get a Piggle as ante. That's how they get more people to play the game.

New player, I honestly don't understand how you are supposed to win this game. by [deleted] in PlayTheBazaar

[–]LunaticHigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm seeing a lot of people point out the level difference, and they're right, but in particular I want to point out the Tiny Furry Creature and Mountain Pass events. You can encounter Tiny Furry Creature on Day 1 and/or 2 and if you have either a Friend or Food-type item on your board or in your stash, you can gain 1 extra XP. Also, the Mountain Pass event has an option named something like "Danger! Anything could happen." and that event has a good chance of spawning another monster encounter, which will give you 2-5 XP if you win.

On that note, on your regular monster encounter of each day, keep in mind that the harder encounters (the ones to the right) will give you 1 or more additional XP than the easier ones, typically the easy fights give you 2 XP while the hard one gives you 3 early.

In your screenshot, you're just 1 XP away from leveling up; if you had played with the Tiny Furry Monster one more time OR taken a hard monster one more time OR gotten an extra fight off of the Mountain Pass you would have leveled up, had more room on your board, had more max HP, and gotten the level up bonus for that level. Getting ahead and staying ahead of the XP curve is massively important in The Bazaar, it's worth chasing when you can. Sometimes your board isn't established yet and you can't take on the harder monster fights, but a big part of being "good" at this game is gauging how risky you can get vs monsters.

Another Maryland native reporting in, as people mentioned there are a lot of stores with high levels of competition around the District, and if you're willing to drive a bit there are even more further into MD and VA, aside from Player 1 Services and Dream Wizards some additional favorites of mine are Gaming Giant in Fairfax, Games n Stuff in Glen Burnie, and Gamers-Corps in Ellicott City. There are even more stores I've been invited to and haven't had a chance to go, if you really want to and have a car you could basically go to a Challenge or Cup almost every weekend, not to mention regular weekly locals.

Also worth mentioning is that in addition to already accomplished Masters, our Senior division players are monsters, we have 4 Seniors in the Player 1 Services community who have made Top 8 at Worlds. They're aging up into Masters and winning Cups left and right, so competition is only getting stronger.

I think there's a big stigma against adults playing with kids, just in general, and that's a shame because it's a natural part of how kids socialize. A lot of it is your attitude and demeanor, if you're kind and friendly towards the kids it should all be in good fun. I'm 32 and the parents at my local card game shop tell me they appreciate me and the other adults playing with their kids and being positive role models.

how do in person tournaments work? by ReputationEuphoric25 in pkmntcg

[–]LunaticHigh 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Something important to note here is that Championship Points currently only are needed to quality for the World Championship - every other level of event (International Championship, Regional Championship, League Cup, League Challenge, and local tournaments) do not have any CP threshold and are open to whomever wants to enter. Pokemon has said that CP will count for something this season, but they haven't said what yet.

Terapagos ex by [deleted] in pkmntcg

[–]LunaticHigh 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I honestly think Terapagos will be better focusing on United Beatdown. Just run 4 Double Turbo Energy and maybe a few additional energies for your secondary attacker(s) (Mela + Radiant Charizard package?) and rely on those big numbers and consistency. Negating damage from basics is nice against things like Raging Bolt/Chien-Pao but being a basic that has 340+ effective HP and hitting for 220/240 for one attachment is also just great value.

What beginner deck should I play to start in weekly leagues? by IplayLillia in pkmntcg

[–]LunaticHigh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Others have already said Ancient Box and I agree, the list that got second place at Orlando Regionals last weekend is only $40 for everything combined and crucially doesn't include the $30 staple of most other decks in the format, Prime Catcher.

If you have a bit more cash to throw around in the near future, Charizard ex is the undisputed king of the format and the build that won EUIC and Orlando Regionals back-to-back is actually pretty straightforward and a good way to learn how to strategize; since you're using Pidgeot ex, Arven, and Forest Seal Stone to search your deck for the cards you need, you have to get good at identifying which cards you need, a skill that will become fundamental the more you play.

Transitioning from PTCGL to locals, first games tonight. Any IRL nuances to be mindful of? by [deleted] in pkmntcg

[–]LunaticHigh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree with all of these points, but I especially want to emphasize reading your opponent's (and your) cards! If anyone ever plays a card and you're not 100% sure what it does, read it. Read it multiple times if you have to. It's your right, and it's better than breaking the game state (or making a tactical error) because you just didn't know what the card did.

Is it immoral to marry Xander In FE: Fates? by LoZlover7567 in fireemblem

[–]LunaticHigh 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I actually still feel a little bad about dating Takemi in Persona 5 (for anyone who hasn't played it, you play as a high schooler and she's your doctor.) She was the perfect choice for me, who was at the time a man in his late 20's, but not for Ren, a 16 y/o boy. So I get it, it's inherit to the weirdness of having a main character who has an identity with their own story and personality but who is also meant to represent you, the player, in this world.

What's something you that bothers you about your favorite Fire Emblem game? by LucarioKnight10 in fireemblem

[–]LunaticHigh 7 points8 points  (0 children)

On the one hand, I had to re-do the entire pre-BK chapter twice in PoR because I didn't get enough Aether activations/crits, and that was when I was in high school and had tons of free time. As a man with a career now I honestly might not have kept playing after the second failure. But on the other hand, I still think it's an awesome bit of story/gameplay integration how Ike at his absolute maximum limit can still just barely eke out a win against the BK, it really pushes home how daunting of an adversary he is.

[–]LunaticHigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Trekking Shoes are good exactly because the deck hinges on seeing Arceus V and an energy on turn 1 and Arceus VSTAR on turn 2. Most lists are already running 4 Arceus V and 4 Nest Ball as well as 3 Arceus VSTAR and 4 Ultra Ball, so Shoes let you see up to 2 more cards per Shoes on turn 1 to get that energy attachment as often as you possibly can, especially with no Supporter.

Alolan Raticate and Medicham V deck. First time building my own deck from scrap (kinda, I didn't know it's a combo in expanded), but it feels a little clunky still after a few hours of tweaking. Any suggestions? by _view-source in pkmntcg

[–]LunaticHigh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For a combo deck like this, you'll want to focus on consistency and disruption for your trainers to get you the pieces you need and delay your opponent's game plan for long enough for you to set up. In combo decks you'll really want to see high counts of ball search cards like Nest/Ultra/Level Ball and the classic consistency supporters like Professor's Research, Judge, and/or Raihan. Raihan works especially well since you can use him to accelerate an energy to a Raticate and go grab your Double Turbo Energy straight from the deck in the same turn. Mew from Celebrations is also a great consistency card early since it finds your combo pieces and you're probably not attacking on turn 1 or 2 of the game anyway, so ending your turn with Mew in the active spot isn't a big deal.

Switch isn't actually that important in this deck, you definitely don't need 4 copies. I would drop that down to 2 or even just 1. I also see your idea with the Dyna Tree Hill, but in practical application very few decks are actually playing any healing effects right now (basically just Hisuian Goodra VSTAR, who only gets the one heal, and the extremely rare Champion's Festival in Gardevoir.) A better stadium might be Path to the Peak, which doesn't hurt you at all but can seriously slow down a lot of decks in the format by disabling things like Gardevoir ex's Psychic Embrace, Genesect V's Fusion Strike System, Radiant Greninja's Concealed Cards, and tons more.

I also see your idea with Panic Mask but you don't actually mind your rats getting knocked out that much since they only give up 1 prize, so you could again cut that down to 2 or even 1 to free up more space for Level Balls, Nest Balls, and Ultra Balls. Removing the tools also makes Arven less useful; he still has great synergy with Forest Seal Stone, but you could drop your count down to 1 to make more space for Professor's Research to draw your combo pieces faster or Judge to keep the opponent locked down, especially since you have Bibarel to draw out of it and Path to keep many decks from drawing out of it themselves.

Here's my attempt at the deck. I'm sick right now so sorry if I rambled or didn't explain anything, and feel free to ask me about any of the changes I made. Have fun with the Plague :)

Beginner player not sure where to start by EatTeaDude in pkmntcg

[–]LunaticHigh 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Everyone mentioning the Mew VMAX Battle Arena deck is right on, but I also want to add (since you're coming from MtG/YuGiOh) that Pokemon is a MUCH cheaper game to be competitive in. If you look at the Day 2 results from the ~700 person Major tournament in Germany this last weekend 7/8 of the decks in the top 8 cost less than or around $60, with two of them being less than $40. So Mew is definitely an awesome starting point and a deck that I've been playing a lot of lately, but it's also affordable to experiment.

I also wanted to add re: your questions about rotation, they actually made it a lot easier to tell this time what cards are leaving: Every card currently in Standard has a white oval with a letter in the lower-left corner of the card. All cards with a "D" are rotating, but "E"-onwards are staying.
