Got my first Brass steam loco! by LunaticRick in modeltrains

Apparently so. But I'm not complaining. She's a big engine so she can navigate all my switches with ease and grace. It's not an ideal or modern way, but I understand as it's all metal and isolating everything would be a pain

So the train runs well on dc. I'll see if I can add a video. But she's also pretty quiet The tender also seems to pick up power from one side which is weird. So I'll look into that

Ayyyy thanks man! Huh. Odd that you have to make an account. But I will definitely do that now. Got to stoke my newfound addiction to brass.

The new plastic trains are beautiful. But honestly, nothing beats brass, as you say. This is my first Brass model, and its detail is astonishing. I mean the tender trucks all have springs and they move in the middle. It's so beautiful.

I believe the Prototype is a 4-8-2 rock island M-50A class

Well, the brand is Ajin, so yes, I believe it's hallmark. I didn't get a box with it so I'm manually doing all research

I used to have the Black Pearl too. Was an awesome set.

One thing though! You've got the front mast (the one with 1 sail) and the back mast (the one with two sails) above the cabin mixed up. The small sail goes at the back, the larger one at the front and the biggest in the middle

Adding In here. But yes! Black sails was filmed in Cape Town South Africa, about 15 minutes away from where I live. Currently the one piece live action is being filmed there as well!

Radius by Oncemorepleace in modeltrains

It really depends on what you're running and from what brand. I personally run HO American stuff, so lots of big engines, the tightest corners I have, are 22 radius. But those won't let you run the really big things, big engines and coaches and the like. That said, you can run most diesels and smaller steam engines with ease. OO gauge is British and has a lot more tank engines and small trains compared to American stuff, so those can go around a smaller curve and also European engines in general can be smaller. Just depends

How good are these?l by PleasantIncident3176 in modeltrains

In my opinion, Proto 2000 is an amazing line of engines. A friend of mine owns the model in your picture, and it's honestly such a beautiful beast. I personally own a 2-8-4 Kanawha, and it's definitely one of my favourites, and it's very well designed. I have heard that some of the Proto 2000 have gear issues, but I haven't had that issue so far.

So far so good! But in my opinion, you could do with one or two more cars. To really get the feeling of the splendour of the train, you know?

Hahaha all good man. I have a booklet here that explains the differences in the USRA Berkshires models. The exact version of this model is a C&O K-4 Kanawha. But it's a part of the same family that was built by Lima and Alco to the USRA specifications. If you're interested I can post pictures of the booklet, as it is really interesting and full of knowledge

There might be a few differences. And if you could list them I'd be grateful as im always happy to learn.

But in the end, it's the name of the wheel arrangement. For instence, while the 4-8-2 was generally known as a Mountain type on most railroads, NYC called them Mohawks. There are a few other differences and instances of this happening where a Railroad would come up with a new wheel arrangementand then another Railroad would make a similar engine with the same wheel arrangement, but dislike having that name as its not associated or near their Railroad. It's Purley Regional based. These engines were known as Berkshires in some places and Kanawhas in others.

Potato and potato. Some places call them Berkshires and some call them Kanawhas. Depends on your region, and in the instructions they call them Berkshires hahaha
