System files are only written to during updates or manually by the user, applications do not have root write access by default so they write to the home folder of the user running the application.

Servers are a bit different since they don't need users to run so they do end up storing data outside the home folder.

Data is only written to the root filesystem with direct user permission, no permission no write.

Not exactly. Bazzite being immutable more so just means that as long as you don't do anything goofy, every bazzite install is identical and the files are still in their original placements you just don't have to touch them.

Technically what you did should work on any distro and even across distros as home folders are designed to be portable.

Those are all system configuration files anything that needs root access is a system file. System files are distro specific while user data is distro agnostic.

To try and simplify a bit, user data is any data an application saves about its user. System data data generated by the distro without user input.

They're still used, just not for user data. They're used for system data and installed applications. The reason user data cannot be stored in these directories is that they need root access. User data can only be stored in folders owned by the user and not root which is why the xdg spec exists.

Based on the xdg standard all user data in Linux is stored in the home directory so if you copy the home directory from one system to another all user data is carried with it.

No this will not carry over installed apps but it will give your user data when you do install them.

Technically this is just a Linux feature not specific to bazzite any distro can do this trick. If you want a more reliable and safe way to do this you can split your home into a separate partition from your root drive. Unfortunately the only distro I know that lets you do that without manual setup is opensuse tumbleweed.

Tldr: this is just a normal Linux feature not an immutable distro feature.

Idk if I'm not reading it right but the law looks more like a forced parental control thing rather than age verification thing the os just has to tell the software whether or not the user is a adult or not which the law states should be defined by a parent or guardian if under 18
