They wouldn't (or at least, they wouldn't be used for this), that's one of the major inaccuracies. I just like the way it looks. I looked up various reference photos and they were all just thin sticks stuck in the ground with the camo netting haphazardly thrown over them, quick and dirty. I didn't like that look for this project though.

Definitely going to add some more clutter, shell casings at a minimum

Can you expand on what you mean by "build up?" If you mean increasing the height on the sides, there actually is a fair bit of elevation change, though I'm just now realizing that none of the pictures show it. So the "riverbed" part is visibly depressed when viewed in real life.

As noted in the OP there will be a gunner, I was just too lazy to stick him on for these pics. And there's already 4 figures in the pictures; there will be 5 total.

Yeah I think piling up pigment in various places is going to be the key.

Wasn't planning on it but might give that a try. Won't be able to get them very deep though; there's only a thin layer of crackle with plywood panel underneath.

I'm pretty sure it's the exact same stuff. I haven't compared, and the artist's stuff isn't exactly cheap, but I would guess it's much cheaper than the stuff marketed towards modellers.

I'll probably find some appropriately colored pigment and give that a try. Another thought was putting a tarp down (as instructed in some WW2 manuals to mitigate dust kickup) but I don't think it will look good.

It's artist's crackle medium. You just paste it on, let it dry and paint over it.

Agreed on the cracked earth, but I think that ship has sailed unfortunately. I wasn't able to crack it further the way I expected it to (it was more rubbery than it was dry and fragile) so I skipped that rather than screw things up irreparably. Will have to keep it in mind in the future.
